Hi! My family bred golden retriever growing up! They are people dogs, companions! We always advised letting them sleep in your bed the first couple nights or so after getting them. They are used to being with their other puppies and hate hate hate being alone! Enjoy him and let him bond with you! That’s why goldie’s are the best, they are lovers! He is precious! You can tell he’s gonna be a great dog by how calm he is! 💛

He’s so precious and calm!! What my mom did to crate potty train worked so well. They don’t like to sleep where they pee and poop so you can make the crate smaller to where all they can do is lay in their bad and circle around to lay in a different position. So you make it just small enough for them to lay down in and he never had an accident in there. As they grow you make it bigger and eventually you won’t need to make it small once they are potty trained! It’s just an idea that I saw work really well :) my husband is almost out of vet school and he recommends that too as an option to crate potty train (especially overnight!)

How I crate trained my Aussie and kept her from having accidents in the crate we got one with a divider and you only want to give them enough room to sleep because they won’t go to the bathroom where they sleep she had maybe 1 or 2 accidents in it but she couldn’t help it and we kept giving her room as she grew ! Now she loves her crate and goes in whenever she pleases.

We got our Aussie Doodle just 8 months ago and while the puppy phase is so precious, it's also very time consuming! I would really recommend not leaving Teddy alone for such a long time. Especially on his first day in a new home! He just had to leave his mom and litter mates and now he was also left by you. It was the first time EVER he was alone and then it was for a really long time. You have to train your puppy to be alone and increase the time very slowly. Maybe next time Sam can go and get the food and you can stay home with Teddy. :)

Ahhh he’s so cute.. My puppy was distressed being in his crate alone at first too and the same thing happened when I left him for the first time. But now he absolutely loves his crate and will go in there on his own ♥️

Oh my gosh. This makes me so emotional! Teddy reminds me so much of my rescue dog's personality. I adopted her when she was 6 years old, so I missed all of the puppy years. I imagine my sweet Nell JUST like Teddy is in this video. I'm actually about to cry. Teddy is so lucky to have you two.

Teddy is so cute! Not sure if this will resolve the crate situation, but I've heard to keep the crate just a bit bigger than the room they need to sleep. When they have a lot of room, they will also use it to go to the bathroom. But if its just his bed, he is less likely to also go to the bathroom. I hope that helps!

Having a sound machine helped my guy when he was being crate trained! Also I would always leave the crate door open, feed him in there, & when he was getting a treat id toss it in there for him to go grab so he made a positive association with it :)

My tip for the crate would be to add that divider and make it just big enough for them to lay down and turn around comfortably. If dogs are given too much space as puppies they will go potty in their crate. If they aren’t given that space they don’t want to go to to bathroom where they lay. I hope that helps!

So exciting! Teddy is adorable!! I have a huge dog, a Great Pyrenees. We used to have a mat under her bowls to prevent mess on the floors but didn’t work so well, now she just eats outside and I’d definitely recommend that as your dog gets bigger

You should look into an adaptil diffuser. It emits a pheromone that only dogs can smell, and it’s the same that his mom would have so it comforts them!

My golden loves tight places because it calms her when she's stressed or scared..maybe under the couch is his secure spot.

A smaller crate will dissuade them from going potty in there! I know getting a larger crate feels like future-proofing, but if it grows as they grow you they will avoid using the bathroom in the same space they want to lay in.

rawhide are terrible bones BUT if you do decide you want to get bones - bully sticks are great for goldens with how much they love to chew & they are digestible unlike rawhide 😊 i have a 6 month old golden named Teddy, too 😊

He’s soooo cute!!! Some advice from a very experienced dog owner and vet tech: Instead of a kong, opt for the west paw toppl instead! They’re much easier to clean and kongs can cause frustration because they’re so hard to get the stuff out. I would avoid any hard chews, they can break their teeth really easily on them.general rule is if you can’t make an indent with your nail, it’s too hard. If you’re looking for a natural chew, I love beef tracheas with mashed up kibble/wet food inside frozen. They take a good while to get through and they’re cheap and easy to prepare. Good toy chews are nylabone, playology and the regular kong chew toys.

Aww he’s so cute! I would recommend getting a Blink mini camera! It’s not too expensive on Amazon and it gives us such piece of mind when we leave our dog in his crate!

Very cute puppy! Did your crate come with a divider? He needs to be in a crate that is big enough for him to stand up and turn around ONLY, or else he is going to continue to have accidents…Also, you need to make sure that he goes potty before putting him in the crate…

I just wanted to share a tip, be careful with the rope toy (tug of war toy), if he pulls the toy apart the little strings can get caught in his intestines and make him very sick. I have dogs of my own and I’ve heard MANY stories of the rope toys getting stuck in dog’s intestines when they pull the rope apart. I wanted to let you know so you can keep an eye on him when he has the toy. Teddy is so precious😊!

I agree! Also… Playing tug-of-war with a puppy is one of the WORST things you can do… Just because he is small, cute, and cuddly now doesn't mean he is not going to not grow into a much larger and stronger dog - they need to establish the pack hierarchy now, and playing tug-of-war is not the way to do it. You can NEVER let him win!

So exciting!!! I would highly recommend freezing the peanut butter when you put it in the Kong so it takes a little longer for him to eat it and it can stay a little cleaner:)

the best thing we ever did was get a camera and position it so you can see him and keep an eye on him!! it gives me the most piece of mind ❤ blink cameras from amazon are great cause they don’t run 24/7, only when you arm them!!

I think the crate is a little too big for him. Id move the divider up to where he can basically just lay in there. That way he has no room to poop and pee. Also if you work on crate introduction it’ll be easier as well. So leaving the door open and kind of encouraging activities in the crate like eating or playing with toys etc. and give it to him when he goes in there on command etc. we have two puppies and that kind of stuff really helps. I’m sure you have it figured out by now but just a thought ◡̈!

So cute!! One thing i also recommend for you to do is to touch him often everywhere! His belly, in between all his paws, ears etc. This will desensitize him for groomings, baths, brushes, nail clippings etc. he’ll be used to being touched everywhere!

As someone with a 2 rescue dogs, I cannot speak for everyone of course, but I will not be doing it again. Only rehomed puppies, or ethical breeders. The behavioral and health issues of my 2 rescues are mentally draining. But I agree on the fixing, after 2 years old of course though. Cause of maturity and Growth plates.
