    I sympathize with this lifter. I switched to a home gym years ago because of this nonsense. The reality is that conventional gyms don't want strong members. They're concerned that you'll intimidate new members from joining and that you'll actually show up and use their limited equipment and space. Their most profitable customers are people who sign up but don't actually show up.

    I mean this is true to some degree. I work in a commercial gym, one that's quickly monopolizing the market here in Australia, but their business model caters to the gym junkies and powerlifters alike. We play hardstyle/trance music, we inadvertently (but openly) appeal to geared lifters, and our gyms are packed to the brim. You're probably thinking of the Anytime Fitness or Goodlife commerical gyms which cater to the recreational lifters, but there can definitely be different types of commercial gyms which work as well

    Well it's the Planet Fitness approach. You'll earn so much more money from soccer moms and white collar dads trying to loose their belly fat than from a small handful of hardcore powerlifters or strongmen. Problem is, the latter group often drives off the first group. If a gym gets a certain reputation, soccer moms and white collar dads stop coming, and this will hurt your business. So unless that is specifically what you aspire for in your life as a gym owner (i.e. being known as a hardcore lifting gym with badass competitors), I kinda understand the guy's concern tbh.

  • @DMKandilo

    @DMKandilo

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Armathy I think it's not about the one guy, it's about what might follow. Kind of like "if we let one of them in, others will follow". Yeah working out between casuals and hardcores are two entirely different worlds. I have good friends who are out of shape who say that they'd like to get in shape, but not the same gym where I go to, because they are afraid to be either belittled or bodyshamed or just intimidated in general by the folks there. Even if I tell them that in all my years training there I have not once seen anyone do that to a beginner, there are indeed people who will only go to a gym if they know that no "real" lifters/strongmen/bodybuilders will be there.

    It's actual discrimination for no reason. I train at shity commercial box gyms and all the bars are rated to 1500lb and like 550lb is not exactly heavy. that's not going to damage any bars, and fair enough he offered a refund, but what about the time he's already taken out of his day to drive to the gym. A lot of the time you have to plan your day around your workout. the guys probably already downed his pre-work, spend more time out of his day signing up to the gym and filing out paperwork. It's a complete joke you can just be a completely normal guy and squat 500lb it doesn't even have anything to do with powerlifting. This is completely ridiculous.

  • @xinsanedefeatx

    @xinsanedefeatx

    *Flashback to Joe Sullivan* Honestly tho this is an underrated comment, most bars that are "rated for 500lbs" mean that they won't instantly explode if you load 500lbs, but if you apply force they sure will bend and warp (if they don't snap) . This could be legitimately dangerous for the lifter and everyone around them if the bars aren't strong enough, especially if they aren't even aware of potential imminent failure Having been the guy "in charge" of procurement at a commercial gym (aka pick from a fixed catalogue from a horrible "approved vendor") the cheapest bars are rated for 300lbs (pretty much only seen in home gyms), "mid tier" are rated for 500-700lbs (depending on thickness they may bend like a deadlift bar at 3 plates, whip like hell, and will be permanently warped. Even a 32mm bar rated at 700lbs will noticeably flex under 3 plates), only "high-end" bars from globo wholesalers will be rated for 1500lbs and these are the only bars I'd confidently use with over 3 plates

Saying you won’t make my cake because I want such a large one and will pay you extra is just stupid. It’s also somewhat discriminatory in the sense that you are not giving me the products that you’ve said you would give me. The right to refuse service applies to things like someone doing dangerous behavior or inappropriate behavior, again the pictured lifter was doing the most appropriate thing with weights you can possibly do. :-)

    @@OfficialPhdPepper Again, being discriminated against stuff you can't change like sexual orientation is not ok. My argument is based on the behavior in the video. And if a bakery can only make a 20lb cake maximum, of course they could potentially reject your request of a 50lb cake. But returning to this gym case in particular, perhaps a freak accident will happen and the guy will drop the bar on himself, scaring the casual members away (no safety pins set at proper height for example). Casual gym goers are extremely oblivious to their soroundings. Someone might be in the area when they guy needs to dump a 500+lb bar, hurting some idiot that is too close. Or by the looks of it, the barbell itself is a generic one which might be permanently damaged if too much weight is placed on it or if it dumped from a certain height. It is ok as business to be wary and watch out for potential risk of accidents, not just manage then when/if they happen. The owner patiently waited for the guy to finish his squats and them politely told him that this is not what this gym is about and offered a refund. I would have shook his hand, got my money and spent it at another gym.

    To be fair, the Gym owner was honestly great about it. He empathized with the guy, appreciated what he was doing. Owner never yelled or escalated the situation with puffy chest yelling. Likewise , the lifter wasn’t downing dry scoops of preworkout with a gallon jug of water and growling at others while slamming weights but he was still breaking gym rules. The gym owner says “I can refund you your money if you don’t want to come here anymore but that’s not my gym, I’m not a powerlifting gym” Equipment is expensive and the liability is increased when lifters slam the weights machines or damage equipment , Surfaces, etc or the cost of lifters suing when they hurt themselves , misuse equipment

    Just opening an all welcome discussion. But I have done some digging and asked actual gym owners and the sort. And apparently unless you're a huge power house like Worlds, Anytime Fitness, etc. Smaller gyms actually have a hard time handling insurance and liability factors causing some to cheap out or not get them at all. And if he's cheaping out on insurance then he sure would be cheaping out on equipment too e.g: buying barbells that have a lower load capacity. So if his barbell snaps when a member squats 5 plates he's in big trouble, and even bigger if he can't get covered by insurance. Intimidation to other members could well possibly be a factor as well. But I think the bigger picture is money, whether it's through Powerlifters scaring other members to quit or not being able to afford the liability of injury - he simply can't afford that. Which also makes sense why he keeps on saying "I'm having a hard time man, I'm the owner" Completely speculative and I'm just regurgitating what other people have told me, feel free to add on.

    I own and run a small gym in the UK and have no problems with insurance or equipment. Cant cheap out on bars etc (All rated to 1500lbs here) . Cost is no excuse and no idea where this gym is but you cant decide how much people can lift for them. We have a load limit upstairs but still use equipment that can handle more, just use common sense.

    The reason they do this shit is because of liability. They don't want you getting hurt under massive amounts of weight and then come back later to sue them or have a family member sue them down the road if you got seriously injured. I don't agree with it. I think they should just make everyone sign a liability form and that's it, but apparently, they get scared of guys who lift heavy because someone somewhere probably fucking sued a gym for getting hurt. Just like the lady that sued McDonald's for the coffee being too hot, which is what sparked off the lawsuit-happy country we live in today!

    When the first Planet Fitness came to town, I went to check it out, because the advertised price was too good to ignore. I do not grunt or drop weights, but I lift respectable weight for my size. During my FREE trial, I apparently I triggered someone, and they set off the "lunker" alarm. I was then politely informed that it was not the place for me. That was the only time I've ever experienced such a thing. Although I have found myself very annoyed with people doing curls in the squat rack at many gyms for too many years. However, since the advent of Crossfit, for the most part, people seem to have returned to using the rack for what it was intended. What triggers me the most is seeing people throw dumbells around.
