I owned a second home in Leadville in the mid-'70s to the early '80s. Wonderful in the Summer.🤗 Brutal in the winter.🥶

Went over Mosquito back in the 80's with a 1972 two wheel drive Chevy C-10 pickup from the Leadville side. I had to stop on the way up to put some rock ballast in the bed to get traction and I had to stick it in the rarely used granny gear. I had tube type bias ply tires too. It wasn't very bright for sure, but I did it.

Nice! I ran Mosquito Pass yesterday too. One correction though. The southern route you mentioned as an alternate way up Mosquito Pass has been barricaded by a landowner who claims it is a private road. It's shown on maps as a public road but someone would have to sue the landowner to prove that. In the past there was just a small cable stretched across it at the upper junction with Mosquito Pass Road, but I saw yesterday that he has now thoroughly barricaded it with rocks.

DarkLordofDebate Yes, you are talking about the one just east of the summit. After I went into Leadville I took another trail in from the south through a big mining district, it doesn’t go the ti the summit, it’s come in further down near the lakes.

Ride comfort is a biggy but it also protects the tires from punctures, adds more traction, and doesn’t tear up the trails

I did this pass in my '96 Land Rover, street tires at that too. Big tires are an American thing. We've done a lot of 4x4 trails in that Rover. With that said, I did buy a FJ Cruiser with big tires & we did Red Cone. Big tires do the job but they're not the end all. BWT, Rover came out with a new Defender. I really like the old Defender but right now, I have the FJ & it's a great vehicle.

I've done trails like that in a Grand Cherokee and also in a Wrangler both on stock tires, but my Wrangler has better tires now. My concern with the stock street tires would be how durable they would be on the sharp rocks.

  • @TrailTraveler

Street tires are not as thick as all terrains and can be punctured on sharp rocks. It is not recommended to go on street tires.

The short answer is “sometimes”. When it’s dry it shouldn’t be an issue but once there is snow it gets pretty tricky and eventually closes

I took a stock 99 diesel F250 up from Leadville over the summer (August 16th, probably around the same time this video was made) and my buddy followed in a long bed 06 F350. He had a little bit of trouble on the switchbacks coming up the western side. This trail isn't very technical, but it is rocky and it beats you up if you have stiff suspension.

@@jacobg5122 what is your personal opinion on taking a Front Wheel Drive, (4inch) Lifted VW Golf Diesel on 28 inch all terrains up this road? (--Specifically, in the most prime conditions, Dry, middle of week with light traffic, etc) Figuring its first gear all the way up. I'll be doing a bigger turbo and tune soon, so i'll have power up at those altitudes; aside from that its a game of traction i believe. Seriously trying to find an "impressive" offroad route to show off what my Vdub is capable(or incapable) of!!!!

@@JChurchua Funny enough, I just went up there again today. I'd say you'd be alright coming up from the Leadville side, but if you try the climb from Alma you might have some trouble. The east side is steeper and has more loose dirt sections that make it harder to climb. Neither side is crazy difficult, though.
