Getting good seats at the Colosseum

Imperial Rome had about a million inhabitants. The Colosseum had only 50,000 or so seats. During the games, your chances of getting a good seat depended on who you were, who you knew, and how creatively you exploited both.

@@thetrickster9885 I think people probably did have "bad eyes" in the ancient world, before corrective lenses became more common in the later medieval era. Then again not a lot of people were in professions that deeded distance - if you're a peasant/serf/slave working in a field or down a mine, or were in a household doing close-range things it probably never came up or was only sometimes remarked on - even blind slaves were kept on if they could do something. As ever, Dr. G... great! I think what sums up for me the fundamental difference between Roman morality and culture and ours is the idea of Vestal Virgins attending the games. I mean, can you imagine a whole convent of Carmelite nuns taking the bus in to sit and watch people being ripped apart by beasts? Or the Sisters of the Convent of the Sacred Heart hurrying down the street to watch a secutor finish off a murmillo?

That’s not the only way Roman morality was extremely strange. The Roman senator Symmachus was annoyed that his 29 captured Saxon slaves, who were going to be used as gladiators, committed suicide. *In 393 the Roman aristocrat Symmachus brought a group of Saxon prisoners to Rome, intending that they publicly slaughter each other in gladiatorial games held to honour his son. However, before they were exhibited, twenty-nine of them committed suicide by the only means available to them - by strangling each other with their bare hands. For us, their terrible death represents a courageous act of defiance. But Symmachus viewed their suicide as the action of a 'group of men viler than Spartacus', which had been sent to test him. With the self-satisfaction of which only Roman aristocrats were capable, he compared his own philosophical response to the event to the calm of Socrates when faced with adversity.*
