Unbelievable Scott. I watched the entire video taking detailed notes about all the software and hardware you mentioned. The great thing about all your info Scott is that it has all been road tested and gig tested. That’s a rare thing Scott. So many people on KZread give you information but then, you have to try it out yourself before you can evaluate it. You have done all that at live gigs and you know what works. I for one greatly appreciate your attention to detail. I am 75. I live in Queensland Australia and have just started busking again so all this info is right on the button for someone building their library of usable backing tracks. Love your work Scott.

Many thanks my friend. It is simply the way it all unfolded for me out of knowing how things work in the clubs of the REAL WORLD. So, I figured that other REAL MUSICIANS who have worked the stages before would relate, with a very small learning curve, how to confidently go do their own gigs. It's what is "Happening" right now, so......if we want to eat.....we have THIS as one option. Glad you enjoyed the info! Cheers.

Coming from a DJ background years ago man stuff has changed dragging 1000 CD's to having them on an external HD with a controller with a laptop is a beautiful thing. Even at concerts now everyone is starting to use the Axe Effect and just using a cab for air on stage. Days of floor monitors are pretty much done with In Ear Monitors. I got fitted for a pair just for using them with my phone and once you get a pair you can't go back to head phones, plus if your traveling they block out all the background noise so you can get some piece and quiet. Technology is a great thing and wish some of the cork sniffers would just get on board and let things change. I loved this video it was top shelf as always my brother!!!! Much love and support!!! As that old saying goes if you like a product buy it and don't steal it people need to eat and live!!!

2017 and I came across your video. Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to give your knowledge and experience. I really sucked it all in and know even if I took a small part of what I've learned from you - things will be so much better. I am NOT a player. I have a plank to spank - but that is about it. But love music of all genres. I have a small bar in Liberia West Africa and a few years back I brought in a couple of local musicians to be a house band of sorts. Keyboard player uses a Yamaha PSR S900 which pretty much does all the backing stuff and a guitarist. We also have a Lady vocalist and a Male vocalist. They have done well but it has gotten stale for whatever reason and I am pushing them to make some changes. I am selling some old gear we used and investing in a Merish 4 an Italian media player. Use more MIDI files. That sort of thing to get the latest songs. Switch off tracks and let the keyboard just do his parts and guitarist same. I bough the guitarist a Zoom multi unit but its too complicated for him. The keyboard player bless him cannot read so well so the power of the PSR is beyond him. So Merish seems a little better and at least the singer can control better. But the guitarist I need a workable solution. I loved the J-station and the fact that its up on the stand and easier to control in many respects than foot pedals. What in you're opinion would be a similar way to go nowadays as the Johnson is pretty hard to get (UK) as I am home UK next month August and will bring some stuff back. Cheers steve Ambrose Liberia out of UK

Excellent advice and recommendations. I’ve been gigging for 20+ years with one acoustic amp and guitar and mic. So it’s also possible to get paid without the ton of gear. I use a Fishman Loudbox mini, but I have used Marshall AS50 and AS100 for the majority. The new Boss acoustic amps look fab. For electrics I use Boss multi effect through my Fishman. I do small rooms bars and coffee shops. I have used a Zoom Drum machine live a couple of times and I have a small KAM (300 Watts) pa I use for open Mic nights in bigger venues. I have used my phone and MP3 players for backing music during breaks. Some may be terrified by the amount of gear you have, just a polite word to say you can cut way down these days. I’m going to steal all your advice and start using backing tracks. Thanks

Thanks for continuing to post these and for all the time you spend putting the videos together. I have to say this may be your best video yet! I do something similar with the downloads, but instead of using software I use a 3.5mm interconnect/patch cable from my computers headphone jack and run it into the line input on my TASCAM DR-07 portable recorder. I usually keep the audio captured in WAV form because I've found all too often when you save as mp3 the snare drum goes to mush.and it helps... The software downloaders usually re-compress it and these youtube audio files are usually already almost too compressed to be usable. I'm really looking forward to your video on the Beat Buddy. I've been following it's developmental and have been considering buying one but I've yet to see how it's software really lets you program your own patterns. I'd also love to hear your thoughts on the new DigiTech TRIO (backing band in a pedal). Keep the videos coming!

As someone else who has had 2 strokes I had to relearn chords and solos to songs again. I quit trying to remember all the words, which I also have in front of me. I'm not ready to quit playing. But I also make my own backing tracks. Have been playing solo for number of years at 72 years young. I have 6 sets with about 15 songs in each set on my computer. That way if I play the same place 2 nights in a row I can change a couple sets., So they will have a change if they have been there the previous night. The most important thing for me was asking the weight of new equipment. No more 80 lb amps. Great Video you made.

Great video on performing solo, duo, trio, etc., with backing tracks. I jam with a band once a week with some friends and we use backing tracks that we create. The space is small with no room for a drummer, so we use Presonus Studio One (with Melodyne) to record all tracks, with an array of instruments and vocals. Many tunes from the 50’s thru the 80’s used a drummer, not a click track, so the BPM is never consistent. Melodyne has the ability to create a tempo map that creates the same floating inconsistent BPM. This way you can record your own tracks... all instruments and vocals as you play along with the original. When we practice we mute the original. I play bass in the band and the other two members play lead and rhythm guitar. So we mute the instruments in the recording that we play live during practice. Two of us do all the recording, playing and singing all the parts at my home studio. My frien$ picks all the songs that he wants to do and records all tracks at his house. We bring our song files to aTuesdays practice and them on a laptop that has Presonus Studio One. We never use karaoke tracks because enjoy creating the tracks on our own. This way you learn the song inside and out. You’ve taken this a step further performing live with the backing tracks and you get a two thumbs for taking the time to show us all the detail of your setup BTW, Tod Rundgren did this years ago with a 16 track tape recorder, so he had to be one of the first.

Hey Scott, thanks for the tutorial, lots of great information. Can you tell me a bit about how you modified the Line 6 mount for the J-Station? I've been using a clamp style adapter and so it's not very secure (no square edges to hold on to). Getting ready to play out solo acoustic and this video was very helpful though your setup looks much more flexible than just acoustic guitar. I don't recall you showing what you do for your vocals - do you just use the reverb, etc. from the power mixer?

You are ambitious Scott. I like the way you tried to fully cover what people want/need to know before making a plunge. Is there a way I can display the chords with the lyrics while I gig? Thankyou.
