Getting a Head Start on my Next BIG Project

An unusually warm and dry March gives me the perfect opportunity to clear a building site for my next big project(s). With some significant lifestyle upgrades in 2024, the needs of my family and I have changed and I'm eager to add the infrastructure improvements to facilitate them.

I’ve been with you since you broke ground on the first cabin. I’m too o old to do much now. But I’m sure there are alot of folks like me, who remember when we could do an honest day’s work. Thank you. God bless you and your family.

Hi Shawn, listen to swamp hunter comment. At 66 I still make syrup. Have done it since a little kid, collecting buckets with my dad. We use to have a home made arch, made out of 2 55 gal metal drums welded together. Then we could fit 2-3 flat pans on top. So I know how much time you are spending boiling when you get good sap runs. Here in upstate NY I normally have 4 weeks or so of sugaring season. Normally from the 2nd week of March , and I pull the taps around the end of the second week of April. Snow cover doesn’t matter much, it’s the temps. When the hard maples start to bud, the sap gets a milky look to it, the sugar content drops below2%, and you are burning a ton of wood. By then it is probably taking 50-60 gal of sap to make a gallon of syrup. You would love having a small sugar house, and a 2’ by 6’ evaporator. I make around 30-35 gallons with my set up, and having a 4’ pan with flues makes all the difference. It would cut your boiling time down to a few hrs a day. Keeping the wind off the pans is a huge plus, they will boil much better. Wind direction also is a big factor in how well the sap flows also. I have seen sap run nonstop during freezing rain , after switching over to tubing, whereas buckets and metal spouts would freeze. It’s a great hobby, glad to see you enjoying it!

looking at that sandy beach ... if you plan on doing black smithing ... perhaps you might think abut smelting some of your own metal too .. all that black sand is essentially Magnetite and Titanium Oxide ... essentially titanium and iron ... a long sluice with ribs will separate out the silica from the ores ... and a moderate strength magnet or Electromagnet will pull the iron ore away from the titanium ... and a very strong one will pull the titanium out of the sand ... and any left over iron ... you just have to find out if it is Legal to sluice there or not .. as for yield ... it looks pretty good .. so perhaps a 5gal bucket of the black sand for a 5mx5mx10cm patch ... which should work down to about a pound of iron and maybe half a pound of Titanium .... and That is being generous .. expect half that or 1/3rd for the same size patch ... myself I would be taking a bucket of sluiced sand back every visit ... also you might find some gold and garnets as well ... and trace amounts of copper and nickle

Synthetic (non-cotton) shorts compared to jean shorts; major difference in ease of mobility and temperature control. Light weight rubber boots are durable, comfortable, cheap and will preserve expensive work boots in wet weather.

A small recommendation i can give, is for your firewood sled you could also get a wagon to make it easier to haul around. in the winter time it might not work as well though. If you aren't getting a wagon on purpose though then keep doing what you're doing! cheers man have a nice day love the videos by the way!

To the best of my knowledge, you can keep using the sap until the buds start to leaf out. Then it starts to become unusable. I'm not a professional or anything so please feel free to correct me if that's wrong. Still enjoying all you do after many, many videos. Outdoors projects and Cali. What could be better. Thank you.

Shawn, as many have already stated any video you put out is very welcomed by us. Your talent is enviable, your choice of simple life is enviable, your knowledge and skill is greatly appreciated by all. We follow you because you are all these things that soothes our tired, broken souls. Your videos gives us so much to give peace to so many you just don’t realize. To see all the natural beauty hat surrounds you, your family and your faithful Cali by your side making the huge decision to return to a more simple, more satisfying life is commendable. It gives us the motivation to go for our dreams some day. God bless!

You have to be very careful about thinning out your hardwood maple stand. Maples need more shade cover to regenerate. With too much sunlight, beech will come in and outcompete maples and take over a stand. I see you have some beech in the stand already. While useful as mast for squirrels, deer, and turkeys, beech will take over the canopy and it's roots will steal water and nutrients from the maples.
