Getting a Geiger Counter Radiation Detector Might Be Useful | Voltlog

Ғылым және технология

High quality PCB Services pcbway.com Join me in this video where we take a closer look at the JD-3001 radiation detector. This tool can detect γ-ray β-ray nuclear radiation as well as electrical and magnetic fields and on top of that you also get a temperature and humidity reading, with data logging capability for these measurements.

Thanks for the teardown. Few notes: - The tube is very small, so it's not particularly sensitive. It will detect stuff, but it's for the smaller changes you will need to wait quite a while. - If you need to check if it works, a common source for radioactive stuff that is legal and largely available are thorium welding rods. - Not sure how well it will perform as a beta detector.

@@voltlog Thorium containing gas lamp mantles are still available too. They can make a cheap test source. It is sure that such a small tube is not very sensitive, even SBM-20 or similar common tubes take quite a while to count eg. background radiation. For seriously high radiation a smaller tube works for sure.

@@hoggif Next step is to see if it can detect stuff like uranium glassware or thorium welding rods because if it can sense those, I would feel pretty confident it can give some warning if the background radiation unexpectedly increases.

Excellent demo, I can tell by your explanation that you are a true scientist! Thank you so much for the teardown to show the Muller tube and circuitry explanation. It is probably a Chinese type tube since the unit is manufactured in China.

These are interesting devices and I have one too. But they are probably not very useful for accident scenarios. Countries have proper measurement networks and weather models showing and predicting the worst releases and you should get good information from emergency services. These handheld things are great for detecting suspicious items for sure, don't want to keep a radioactive item near you for long periods of time without knowing about it. There certainly are sad stories about people carrying strongly radioactive sources on their person without knowing about it and the result can be very bad.

@@voltlog I guess it wasn't you who deleted my comment, but youtube's automatic filter, because I used a word it didn't like. So I'll try a stripped down version of the comment: Keywords like "anti radiation negative ion shield" (throwing "quantum" and "energy" into the mix helps as well) on some well known ecommerce platforms should give you results. You'll find a lot of "protection" pendants and stickers. Bigclive did a video about stickers a few days ago. Videos about the pendants are on youtube as well. They are reasonably safe as a test source to check if meters are working properly. Obviously don't use them for their "intended" purpose, i.e. don't wear them or stick them to your phone.

I would think they would at least try to shield the internal components against gamma, even if its a thin lead foil, but I suppose its a BOM cost consideration, and if you're near something that energetic you're probably not going to be alive long enough to care

Let me try again since my previous comment seems to have been (auto)deleted. If you need a radiation "source" check out some well known ecommerce platforms, which shall remain unnamed because it seem to trigger the spam filter, with keywords like "anti radiation negative ion shield" (throwing "quantum" and "energy" into the mix helps as well).
