Many old timers judged a farmer’s capabilities and success on the straightness of his furrows and his corn rows.

Singles doubles and triple trees, the smell of leather and horses, and hearing clicking of shoes. So quiet is the plowing/working with horses. For those never been around a horses, the reaction side of a horses brain can hurt you. A lot of time and training goes into having a working team like Jim has. Thanks Jim for the videos, they brings back memories.

One of my grandfathers was using horses in the 50’s/early 60’s. Dad worked mules at a school farm before he was married. The horse farming culture wasn’t passed on though. Dad went with gasoline horsepower when he dairy farmed for himself. None of his large family carried on in that way of life, the small-time farmer. Good to see this history brought forward by patient, capable people. Thanks.

Wow, out plowing in March, that is the earliest I have ever heard, that is a real nice field. A straight start , good job. Nice plow. Thank you, all 5 of you. :-) Ps; what is the rule of thumb, 2 horses per bottom? So 2 bottom plow requires 4 horse? I suppose many variables. .

So enjoy seeing the horses plow and disk. Great video!

I have seen people work with horses but Jim seems and the horses also seem to understand each other where I have seen others just fight with the horses and it’s not so smooth as what Jim shows on his videos it’s too bad you are so far from me I would love to come out and watch him work with his horses

This is the way I have always done it, but I have changed the side checks some.

Nothing like the smell of freshly turned soil and horse sweat in the spring.

None of them were born on the farm. Yes, I did used to raise horses from mares and I have trained quite a few

I only hook up three abreast for plowing and disking, tillage work.It helps some to switch the lines up, it’s been a while since I’ve done it now. Thanks for watching

I've been running the lines to the inside team and jockeys sticks to the outside but am also looking at different ways

The out side of a horse does the inside of a man good.

Just curious: I’ve asked about every feller on here who works horses, and nobody has given me an answer. Do you know what the old timers called a bridle bar? Pap and my uncles are long dead, and took a lot of the answers to my questions with them. Ye see, I retired off of the railroad, and many RR terms were carried over from horse and buggy days. RR bridle bars connect both switch points together so that they slide from 1 stock rail to the other. Would it be the bar from, say, your 3rd (the horse not hitched to the tongue) horse’s bridle to yer center horse’s collar, so that ye wouldn’t need a check line on her? Thanks for any info. from E. i watched your MOWING experience(jim's wife) and there was not much to it when jim took the reins- he has lots more experience with the blondes (lady and whomever)much more interesting then watching all the government agencies getting audits from socalled "press"your family has most of my attention.

aren't colts real young MALE horses -young FEMALE horses are called Fillys-older Males are called either stallions/geldings and females are called Mares

Up until about 4-year olds, males are called colts and females called fillies.
