Getafe Centro, called "Getafe - Badajoz" until 1981, is a railroad station and transport interchange located in the Spanish municipality of Getafe.
Its facilities are served by line 12 of Metro de Madrid, line C-4 of Cercanías Madrid and multiple urban and interurban bus lines.
The different name for each of the two stations that make up the interchange (changing the noun "center", which was part of the name of the Cercanías station, the oldest, for the adjective "central" for the name of the Metro station) responds to a criterion that was adopted for the naming of the stations on Metro Line 12 that correspond to the five Cercanías stations closest to the urban centers of the towns through which its route runs.
The station is part of the Móstoles - Parla Iberian gauge railway line, at kilometer point 14.3.
The original station was part of the Madrid - Ciudad Real line, built by the Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Ciudad Real a Badajoz y de Almorchón a Bélmez (CRB) and inaugurated in 1879.
However, barely a year after its inauguration, the facilities passed into the hands of the MZA company, after it was annexed to the CRB.
Initially called "Getafe - Directa" to differentiate it from the other station that existed in the municipality, it was renamed "Getafe - Badajoz" in 1912.
In 1941, with the nationalization of the Iberian gauge railroads, the facilities passed into the hands of the newly created RENFE.
In 1981 the route was electrified and the station was integrated into the new network of Cercanías Madrid, changing its name to "Getafe Central".
In 1988 the historic line Madrid - Ciudad Real was partially closed; since that date the station has been part of the Móstoles - Parla line.
Until 1998, the old station building was only used for commuter services.
In that year the railway section that passed through the town of Getafe was buried and the current building was built.
The Getafe Central metro station was opened to the public on April 11, 2003, when Metro line 12, to which it belongs, was inaugurated.
Since January 2005, the Adif agency has been the owner of the railway facilities, while Renfe Operadora operates the line.
Since July 6, 2014, the Metro station remained closed for works to improve the facilities of line 12 between the stations of Arroyo Culebro and Los Espartales.
The reason for these works was the replacement and improvement of the existing conditions of the track platform with a series of consolidation works, replacement of the track fastening system, waterproofing of the tunnel and increase in the capacity of the drainage network.
These actions will allow trains to double their speed when passing through this section, reaching speeds of more than 70 km/h.
Service was reestablished on September 8, 2014.
This station is the most centrally located of the eight metro stations in Getafe.
The interchange is located at the intersection of Ferrocarril and Ramón y Cajal streets, both in the Centro neighborhood.
It has a building of modern design, with glass and wood facades, a semicircular floor plan and a single-pitched roof.
It has a vestibule for Cercanías (on the upper floor), another for Metro (on the lower floor), a cafeteria and a kiosk (on the ground floor at street level).
Both the two lobbies and the train and metro platforms are at a subway level.
