How can they just sit there? Got to get up for the Godfather and his stage full of Maestros! What a show!!!!!

People have commented in other Midnight Special videos that the audience was generally instructed to sit still and not make any noise for some reason. It really stands out though.

Hello Midnight Special, I saw this episode when it first aired. At the end of this broadcast as the credits were rolling James Brown performed a song entitled, "Everybody Wanna get Funky one More Time" it is a rare classic and the ONLY time he ever performed it on TV. Is it possible that you could air this? This request may fall on deaf ears or never be seen, but I had to try. I'm putting it out there in the universe. I was 16 when I last saw this and it would mean so much.

I used to be able to copy James Brown dance during karaoke sessions at my friends house now because of my knee being messed up I can hardly dance at all😔...anyway I can't stop laughing at the guy in the yellow dancing next to the lady in the background 😂😂😂😂

I have a sudden urge to get up off of things...not sure why 😂
They must have told the audience not to stand up!
I noticed it was like that for a lot of dance songs, no one would stand and dance. How can people not dance to great songs unless told to stay in their seats. Who knows
Just a shame it wasn't a completely live recording

So, here's James with his always ready and tight band doling out his brand hard driving funk and.....you can see some of the kids in audience wanting to get up offa that thing but apparently aren't allowed to. Very weird to watch a dead audience when James is working. It seems just wrong. SMH. Another great performance, James (RIP)

The audience is not listening 😁
Everybody's complaining about the audience but remember, as great as this performance is it was 1976, 10-15 years after James Brown's prime, it was a whole new vibe by then and that's a young crowd

It doesn't matter if he was ten or fifteen years past his prime in this performance because he was Great Here!! He more than Still had it!! And that song is Super Funky, Groovy, and I can't help but get up and dance, and I'm 63 years old Already!! Being that the crowd is Young should be All The More that They Should be Up and Dancing!! What a Dead Crowd!! And All The People Complaining about This Dead Crowd, Have a Right To!!👍👍

James Brown's prime as a performer was in 74-77, his physicality, vocals and dance ability had all surpassed what he was in the 60s, just because he wasn't as popular by then doesn't change that. This has become very clear having watched and listened to a lot of James Brown live. It might not be my favourite era but it was objectively his best. Also 15 years before 1976 was 1961, that was before any live performance he'd done had been recorded.

@@VinVonVoom Nah, I would say '74 cos that's when Three The Hard Way came out, although his actual "acting" probably peaked in the '60s when he was fresh out of football. I always thought Fred Williamson was better frankly, but if you say it's funky, to each his own player...✌🏽✊🏽
Here from Kendrick
That man had more talent in his left leg than any ten of these Hip Hop "artists". He literally invented funk music while rappers hire some guy with a laptop to make their beats they mumble-rap over.

You got to give credit to band leaders/music interpreters Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis. I saw Pee Wee play Cold Sweat on a piano when he described how he came up with it, was spine-tingling to hear and see it.

You can respect your favourite artists without having to put others down. Mumble rap is incredibly irrelevant to this video and there was absolutely no reason to bring it up.
Crowd was not prepared. They couldn’t handle the funk. Essentially they were paralyzed in shock. Poor white folks…
