I freaking love Anthony. This guy is truly an experienced gentlemen. He is quick thinking (knowledge and experience) and I can tell he is rushing through and displaying the most information he can for the time period he has and not make it to “physics” talk and I know enough that there are some many aspects for general so just to be able to explain to follow as close as you can to a model. It’s awesome. I freaking love this guy. Thank you Audioholics for getting him on the team with his knowledge. I really really want to hire him (but I feel like I couldn’t afford him)or just apprentice him for a year or more or just apprentice. Hire me please. Anyway, at the least - thank you so much to be able to hear his voice speak on it.

Friday morning…the advantages of working remotely. I can now dedicate my first couple hours to things that matter, like better understanding low end response in my room rather than dealing with pesky help desk type emails. Irresponsible? Yes indeed. Loving every second of it? Absolutely.

3 Questions: 1. Wouldn't you get phase issues in different parts of the room because if the time difference between the subs and your ears, and if not, why? 2. Would the ultimate be 8 woofers, 4 on the floor corners and 4 in the ceiling corners? 3. Does sub orientation matter, up and down the room, facing the width, or have them all facing the centre of the room on the diagonal?

This is by far the best video on base optimization I've seen yet. Not to diminish any of your older videos, but this talk and this awesome presentation by Anthony was the most informative for me, I really did learn useful things here. Even though I'm not going for multiple subs. Thank you very much, Anthony! You're a great speaker and presenter.

I had an idea for the person who asked the last question It would require quite a bit of luck but I have had times where I used LFE+Mains to deal with issues when I couldn’t move the subs to find any better placement especially when the mains can handle some lower end. It requires a little bit more time adjusting phase alignment and EQ but can be done that way sometimes.

I am old enough to remember the mid-70's Sensurround and the mind boggling bass that system produced (120DB 15- 30 HZ) so when I put together my home theatre sound system that was my inspiration. Therefore, I am surrounded by subs, a left and right LFE, a center sub, and a left and right sub for the surrounds in the back corners. I get nauseating amounts of bass this way and you'd be surprised how much bass is in the surround tracks. I bought the Midway Bluray which has the Sensurround tones and it was pretty darn close to the theatre experience (though not 120 DB!).

I have a big room. Running all channels at full. Loving it. Almost perfect timing, effects slam in the listener :D + ofc. 2x18, 2x13 and 2x12. Cornerloading is my preference - eliminates a lot of nulls. All 4 corners.

I've been going about all of this with raw horsepower. Thousands of watts and 14, 18" subs later, the output is insane and smooth but I love love LOVE that this amount of information is now available because as good as things are, they can always be better. Having this level of knowledge to reference shows me how I can get to that next level!

I think the majority of ''Home Theatre's' these days are in the living room. I know I went from a dedicated room down to the living room then to another home where I no longer have the option. Considering how many people watch content on phones and tablets these days a living room 'Home Theatre' is a step up. Point being, it would be good idea to also try to address situations for the common man. I also think more AV receivers are sold for living rooms vs dedicated rooms, perhaps I'm wrong.

Your videos are great! Though I am now confused about whether or not I should run LFE to my four subs? I am going to run four single subwoofer cables in my walls to four different locations (for four subs). Is this the proper thing to do?

Maybe everybody else can chime in, but personally, the longer the better. I'd listen to a 4hr one of these no problem.

Where do the Golden Cube formulae come into play with regards to this, when building a room ?

I think whenever the SPL is discussed (especially for very low frequencies) the dB plot label on graphs (and maybe stated verbally ) should be more specific (e.g. dBA, flat, dBC, etc) as the layman may be confused. Great talk and thanks. GG

It's dBZ, which is unweighted. All of the other weightings you mentioned as an example apply heavy negative corrections at bass frequencies, in the order of 10 dB.

Using ashly protea 4.8 myself, awesome stuff :) my question is what about vertical placement of the subs? is it worth to put one sub near the ceiling if using 3-4 subs? I use jbl jrx225 mains standing on a sub so I can put another sub on top of the jbl and it will be almost touching the ceiling 🙃

I took a look at the THX site tool, and also looking at 18:20, don't all these depend also where u place the sub? I would think the location of standing waves would significantly shift just by moving the sub/speaker, no?

Us In an Atmos setup including two subs and full range LRC speakers, what would be the best speaker/ sub placement to start with. Can LRC be placed to cancel out rooom modes in combination with two dedicated subs?

Does Anthony offer a service where you would send in the dimensions of your room (with pictures) and what equipment you are using and he would cook up a solution?

I have a pb4000 and my plan was to get a 2nd in the near future but this pandemic and health issues won't let that come to fruition any time soon what to do? My living room is about 20 feet wide and 10 feet long basically almost a perfect rectangle were should I have my TV placed at? And 1 subwoofer

So basically just start with four 12s one in each corner then just keep stacking whenever an upgrade is possible, 3-4 12” drivers in each corner should be enough for most rooms.

Are 4 8” subwoofers better than two 12” if placed on all corners. Do we loose any output level?

I have a 30x12 long living room because I had to duplex and I took the center wall out so getting my sound rate is going to be interesting

Two things I forgot to mention Florida ceiling is seven and a half feet high and I have two chimney stacks in the living room

small and hidden suppwofer :) Which is a small good subwoofer which work pretty well for use 4 subwoofer?? i wantet to buy the XTZ 12.17 Edge, but i think its to big if i use 4.

Hi guys. If you want to have a good bass , clean and loud in every corner of the room, you should learn about single bass array or double bass array. You would have good bass with 12” subs.

You mention the minidsp can be used to integrate 4 subs from a single out from an AVR and that delay will help integrate them but isn't the delay meant to be to the mains to delay the speakers to slow down to meet the lagging subwoofers which have the inherent delay. Or are we talking about delay between the 4 subs?

Primarily the delay between the subs but you also need to get the 4 subs tike aligned with the mains too.

How does owning def techs sts with built in subwoofers change the equation? Or does it?

Quick question for anyone knowledgeable on YPAO; One of three subs in my system is a 15” klipsch utilizing their wireless connection. When I run YPAO it judges the distance at 65’ actual distance is 12’ Should I leave it set to 65’ because it’s compensating for the delay or set distance to the actual 12 feet?

No think of it like anything over 4 is overkill. If 1 sub is 100% and 2 is 200% better 4 might be %250 better and 5 might be 260%. I just made those numbers up but it should illustrate the point. Another way of wording it would be anything over 4 and you're at the point of diminishing returns and it would have been better to invest that money somewhere else or into better subs.

@@BradleyAshley Theirs no set in stone limits to the number of subs in a room and given room size and sub size one may need more then just 4 subs to properly/fully load the room... near the end Don mentions working on the biggest theatre room he's ever done (4th largest home in America) and how he plans to use 8 subs in the large theatre room... Anthony jokingly states he'll likely need more like 16 subs, which was tongue in cheek but also truthful as Don agreed he wanted to go further but ran into restrictions. If desired one could do 8 subs in any room, just by stacking 2 subs in each corner... 4 has become the optimum number because thats that amount of corners/walls in a square/rectangular room and based on the average/typical room size/listening environment, 4 subs is all thats needed... in most cases, but thats not to say outliers dont exist... for ex. with a extra wide or extra long room, maybe you'd need the 4 corner subs, plus mid wall subs on the sides and or rear... which I assume is the approach Don will be taking in his large theatre job, he didnt mention specific details just that he plans to use 8 subs which im guessing means placement of 4 corner subs and 4 mid wall subs... In your case since you already have the 5 subs you may as well experiment and attempt to integrate them all into your system... Im guessing a good starting point for placement of 5 subs, would be 4 corner subs and one sub mid rear wall.

What is the best for dual subs, 1/4 width on the front wall? or 1/2 wall on the front and back?

Experimentation is the name of the game, both placements are proven to work but one will likely be more optimized in your room environment then the other, not to mention that one placement will likely be more aesthetically pleasing to you then the other. Your best bet is taking REW measurements which will help you see whats happening in the room that your ears cant.

Story: I have been playing with audio gear for more than 30yrs, and recently I moved into house with a theatre room, with what must have to be the absolute most perfect dimensions for the worlds worst standing wave issue, no matter what I did, no matter how big the sub, no matter what EQ system I used, anywhere but 1 meter from any wall had all the bass and charm of a tweeter in a cardboard box, its been totally disgusting to listen too, have tried Bass traps and sound damping, heavy curtains..... nothing worked, had two subs, tried them apart, together, next to the listening area, under the cabinet, on the cabinet, firing up, firing down...., then I watch this video, and I see all the confusing math and calculations, and I almost stopped watching, then he says, the easiest fix is use 4 subs, 1 in each corner, this is the only thing I didn't try, and reason being, is most people are stretching the budget to buy 1, little own 2 quality subs, so I thought, I'm not spending big $$ to test this theory, so I went and hunted down 4 identical of the cheapest crap subs I could find, had to drive all over my city to get them, but in the end, I paid between $59 and $129 each :) I set them up in the corners, turned off all EQ settings, made sure everything was flat, levels were identical, and fired them up, well f&^%%*%k me, blew me away, those 4 El Cheapo's destroy my big boy subs, and now there is a huge bubble in the middle of the room where all the bass and energy is, and when I move near the walls and corners, they now sound like a tweeter in card board box, and I find there is less bass leaking out of the theatre room, unfriggenbeleivable!, so after wasting thousands, I fix it with $250 worth of second hand junk, I don't actually need anything more now, as those four are gut wrenching, Anthony, your a bloody legend.

One sub in each corner = no damping in corners ?

The biggest and most powerful sub I ever had in my theater provided terrible bass...multiple 8 inch subs are far better. With the big powerful sub, I could hear it really well in other rooms, just not the theater room...it was literally too powerful for that room.

Don mentions at the very end of the video that integrators like himself, usually pay for these CEDIA level classes. So I figure he came to learn and to meet and interact with the instructor.

Anthony Grimani is making Don Dunn look like an amateur tweaker with his camera adjusting, off screen fiddling, inappropriate response to Gene and inability to just work himself into the mood and flow of the show. Most likely, it’s his enormous ego that’s responsible for his off putting behavior, and not an actual drug problem. But it doesn’t matter, he’s super slimy either way and his stimulant (nobody acts like that without being higher than a kite on SOMETHING) based schtick has suddenly gotten old. And his absolute amateursm in front of a camera is only worsened by his erratic behavior and inability to focus when he’s not the center of attention. Really not a good look for Audioholics.

Anthony, you believe in sound travelling in straight lines, the earth is not flat any longer. Don't compare sound to light. I take it you are not an engineer.

What is your point? At no time during these sessions are there any references to low frequencies propagating in straight lines.
