Lens calibration can be the difference between a perfect shape foot or 'my photos are out of focus' feeling. In this Lens calibration video we look at the importance of dslr lens calibration and how it can be effecting your photography. We all want to know how to get sharper photos with some sharper photos tips but sometimes it could just be the equipment. By fine tuning your lenses to your camera bodies you could und up with considerably sharper photos.
Using a lens calibration chart that includes all the measuring tools you need you can almost instantly get better and sharper photos. Remember though Sharper images is not only lens calibration you must have mastered the art f focussing for photography in the first place. Learning how to get sharp photos is something that we all want to do when fixing blurry photos. Just remember to also look at your other camera settings as this can effect lens sharpness to. Remember lens calibration can significantly improve the sharpness of a lens and camera body combination.

    Great, thank you for this! I have noticed that some of my photos are starting to lose sharpness, but are actually showing a tiny bit of movement even at fast shutter speeds and with image stabilisation (Vibration Reduction). Is this due to the lens trying to focus on something which isn't quite in the same place as what I'm trying to focus on?? (If that makes sense?!) Thank you!

    The camera stares the information and nows which lens you have attached. most cameras can stere a lot of lenses and if you have a super old lens from say the 70's then many cameras have the option to manually save a calibration and name it for a specific lens.

    Awesome video! Exactly what I was hoping for. I just have one quick question and you did address it in the comments below but i just want to clarify. So for telephoto lenses (lets take the canon 24-70L for example) you'd do this test at 24mm and another at 70mm and you said you'd split the different. So for example if at 24mm I was back focused by 2 and at 70mm I was front focused by 3 would I just adjust my camera focus +1 or +2? Thanks! Again- great video!

    Hello. I use a Panasonic Lumix DC-G9, and all of my lenses except my maco lense are the Lumix Leica line. It seem to be spot on. However, I use it for large landscape photography, usually under the circumstances that a chosen focal pattern will cover large areas making it sometimes dfficult to pinpoint the direct spot of exact focus. While I am sure you are aware that shooting M4/3's changes the situation a little bit. I have never seen a calibration setting in my menus but I still want spot on focus when needed. If the G9 does in fact have a calibration setting, to which length do I set up the equipment? A 12-60mm crop is actually the 35mm equivalent of 24-120mm, the 8-18mm converted to 16-36mm, the 100-400mm is at 200-800mm and last the 30mm macro prime out to 60mm? Can you offer any advice? Thank you.

    for this you should do the lens calibration at both ends see what you come up with and then split the different. then test again in the middle. with cool lenses you have to compromise but usually it will be front focussing or back focussing at both extremes of the zoom with one end being a little more extreme than the other. so just calibrate you sense in the right direction. Definitely works

    How about for crop cameras? Do you need to multiply the crop factor to the distance?

  • @clearlyed

    @clearlyed

    6 жыл бұрын

    For lens calibration on crop sensor cameras you jus have to do the calculation for the actual focal length that your lens and camera combination gives. so if you are using a full frame 50mm lens on a crop sensor your focal distance would be between 75 and 85mm (depending on brand). you then just use this numbers for your lens calibration. If its a lens made from crop sensor cameras then just use the focal length written on the lens.

    you would just do the calculations at the focus length you camera and lens combination works out. So at 50 mm on crop is somewhere between 75 and 85mm so you use that number to do your calculations for lens calibration. I hope tis helps.

    Nicely done. Re: mirrorless cameras, hope you don’t mind that I’ve put my comment here instead of as another in the thread below regarding mirrorless. Don’t want it to get lost in the verbal tree. Sony mirrorless cams (e.g., A6500, A7R2) have an AF micro adjustment feature to calibrate AF for certain adapted lenses - front/back mis-focusing is addressed. Not as widespread a prob., but just to set the record straight, it’s sometimes needed for mirrorless. (Can’t speak for brands other than Sony, but wouldn’t be surprised.) My guess is that the kind of product you describe would be a reasonable tool for same issue. Would appreciate your sponsor’s reply. BTW, miss the intro dance steps . 😀

    How does the distance rule apply with telephoto lenses?

  • @clearlyed

    @clearlyed

    6 жыл бұрын

    for lens calibration of telephoto lenses its exactly the same. so a 400mm would nee to be calibrated at 400inches. That being said this is not vitally important for lens calibration, its just ideal. if you don't have the space and need to be slightly closer ten thats just fine too.

  • @clearlyed

    @clearlyed

    6 жыл бұрын

    ever camera is sent out within a tolerance. Nikon or cannon might say for example that the body can go out with a tollenrent of plus or minus 2 on a scale of say 100. the same goes for a lens. Remember nothing is perfect. so if the body is say +2 and the lens is also +2 then your focus is going to be off by +4. this is noticeable for sure. I have lenses like this and a calibration fixed it. I hope this made sense and answered your lens calibration questions

  • @RomboutVersluijs

    @RomboutVersluijs

    6 жыл бұрын

    I do get that part. I just dont get why would Part be +2 and part B also get +2. That means the proper value is off, thus the production is done properly. This seems to be a fix for miscalculations or settings :)

  • @clearlyed

    @clearlyed

    6 жыл бұрын

    I think you are misunderstanding. You are correct that with he value above the lens would be off. which is why we calibrate. Lets go back. Inside a factory where thy make cameras not everything comes out 100% perfect, thats impossible. so instead they have developed systems of tolerance. if a product is within a certain tolerance then its acceptable to be shipped. The same goes for lenses. Not all lenses are perfect and even if they are slightly off they can still be within the factory accepted tolerance. This however means that our systems can be off. So in the explanation before a camera leaving a factory may be slightly cack focussing but still within the tolerance so gets shipped. A lens might also e slightly back focussing but still wishing the tolerance so gets shipped. put these together and the problem is multiplied and your critical focus is off. This is wy we calibrate. Also, over time equipment drifts, if you pump it, drops etc this can all effect the level of lens calibration. So again. if the tolerance fro a fact try was +2 on the body and _4 on the lens. it would be off by +4 you would see that in the lens calibration process in this video. So you would out it back by -4 for perfect focal. I hope this makes a bit more sense. Im not sure my first answer was the best way of describing.

    I have done an odd experiment with 6D, SL2 Canon and MFT Lumix - where I am shooting close-ups and trying to evaluate how sharp the lens or sensors are - my comparison is based on me shooting FILM for many many years - and I am not impressed with digital sharpness. I've tried using autofocus as well as manual - and nothing compares to slide or color negative film sharpness - IMHO. AM I imagining things or is this also a complaint with everyone. I have used prime lenses, zooms, Canon, Tamron, Sigman lenses - and nothing is as sharp as film. I will say that out of the 3 cameras - the 6D produces sharper images than the SL2 or MFT. Any feedback is welcomed. I can't believe that every lens with every camera is out of calibration. Not all systems allow for calibration.

    Just a comment on that cause my canon750d also can not calibrate. However think of it this way. if you perform the test and learn your lens is front focusing by x then at least you could say when I focus, I will focus on the ear and then the eye will be in focus. Basically if you cant calibrate it you can at least learn how to work with it. Also you can do this with a simple ruler set at 45deg on a long table. No need to buy anything. Try it! and learn. :)

    Well you have the basics but you left out 90 percent in your studio a perfect world I agree but it’s not here why temperature is a massive thing it’s -52 with the windchill today and in 4 months 95 above you totally didn’t know or you woulda said it .Another thing is everyone bumps or even drops there gear then you need to check calibration and a major thing is learn the metric table 25 mm =2.5cm so multiply your lenses focal length x25 mm not one inch for lenses under 200 mm and over is x50 mm not inches if your measure meant was correct my 600mm would 30 thousand inches lol to freakin funny

    1mm = 25cm 100mm = 2500cm ?? 2500cm is not 2,5 m 250cm is 2,5m So 1mm is = 2,5cm

    I am still confused as to why the title says this is a camera "trick". This is not a trick....... Click bait. Reported. Unsubscribed

    Thank you so much for you comment. However I must say I am somewhat confused by it. Maybe we have different ideas on how we define ‘trick’ in terms of cameras. There really aren’t any true tricks at all just techniques and things you can do to improve you photography results. This is exactly that. A way to improve your focus through a simple step. Calibration. I am sorry that a simple title offended you so much that you decided to report my channel and attempt to negatively effect my impact. I am trying to put out content that can help people improve. It’s just a shame that you weren’t able to simpleton Lynn make the choice to click away deciding it wasn’t for you. I wish you all the best and I hope you are able to understand that many of us are trying our best. We are not perfect, I certainly am not. But I am always trying to improve.

    this is not a trick! this is a great video without all the background music and BS. if you truly want to get tack sharp photos, I would also recommend doing this. 3 of my lenses needed to be calibrated, and this helped to get sharper photos. Thanks for the great video . Thanks Ed

    I can't believe some of you people, you purchase an expensive camera with all the bells and whistles and then you can't figure out how to calibrate your lens after he explains it. How on earth are you going take photos, probably in auto mode of some type.

    Sorry that you think I am sellout. I would like to know what you mean by this. If its because I am promising a specific product. Well I have used this for a while and love it. Many many youtubeers talk about products and sometimes we need to make a living too. I'm not sure why I shouldn't be able to speak about something feely yet respectfully let you know that it was sponsored. I think that the video is just as reverent with or without this specific product. Still filled with lots of information completely free for your he viewer. I'm sorry if this has offended you and its a shame I had to explain myself. Im just tying my best and trying to figure out a way for this channel to not cost me money. I wish you all the best.
