I agree with this comment 100% Basically every other video just gives a explanation but never shows how to apply it to a real world scenario. Would love to continue seeing content like this from you where you shoot the "behind the scenes" of your job to teach others how to do it.

This should be the first video people watch before they start working for businesses like you mentioned. It's packed with so much information and IRL surroundings which can encourage them to get out of their comfort zone. They shouldn't really think about price to much and try to do it for reasonable price.. after they become good at it, shoot higher cause people will start to look for them.. like clients are probably looking for you. :)

Pricing is very important, especially for beginners, because they either ask too much and the client refuse, or they almost work for free, which shouldn't be an option. At least some price ranges would help. Or some suggestion on how we should "calculate" the rates. Thank you for sharing your experience! Greetings from Romania!

I didn’t really want to go into price because depending on where you live and how the market is, the same price can be overkill in one place and next to nothing in another. Generally I would say for someone starting out, without a big portfolio, in lets say Spain, initially I would price a session (taxes and costs excluded) at around 150-200 euros (at least in my area a lot of places don’t even want to spend that much, so finding clients that understand the importance and value of good social media marketing is key). This assumes that there are no travel costs or anything like that. And as you create a portfolio, get more proficient with the work ramp that up

If you’re getting started pitch €350 for the full package and get to work. Close 10 clients at this price, you’ll make €3500 and spend about 20 days working to provide good results. Then scale it down to avoid burnout while raising your prices.

yeah, honestly gimbals are such a hassle for me, especially when needing to do hybrid work. I will bust it out now and then for client shoots but I try to avoid it most of the time. Thank you!

This is great advice, and so useful. You actually give useable tips. I love the behind-the-scenes part, especially the information you add to it. Your advice on not using an ND filter and not worrying about the 180-degree rule in these scenarios makes so much sense. Thanks for sharing this!

Yess, realestate is definetely a great market. The only thing with realestate (at least from my understanding) is that you want your photos and videos to be much more polished, meaning - straitght lines, bracketed exposures, cleaner and more tedious edits, gimbal shots for video, etc. But definitely a great field to get into and get paid!

Solid video with some good tips. This is actually my clientele as well as I spent many years in the restaurant industry. The only thing that surprised me was how you went up to tables and shot guests while they were eating. Most of my clients have been against shooting guests on location albeit you are mainly shooting the food with maybe their hands in the shot. They don't want to make their guests feel uncomfortable.

I agree with that and with most restaurant I would not do this. At Lokal the owners dont have an issue and the clients are generally never bothered about it, on the contrary whenever they see themselves in posts and stuff they always leave nice comments. The whole place has a really relaxed and open vibe.

I’ve gotten a few side jobs by just stopping in small cafes, coffee shops, & retail businesses while out doing street shooting & finding a cool exposure & asking if they mind me taking a photo in their business. It usually starts a good dialogue for a potential project with them.

to be honest the last section of your video is so helpful showing us the BTS of making your clients content, such a simple approach and shooting everything. I just updated my xh2s to the new firmware and I think the subject tracking will make my video work so much easier. Ffrim a few small tests I did it seems to work really well.

This is what I did for a restaurant whose entire menu I have shot for last year. It’s basically offering a “retainer” program, where you become their in-house photographer but not totally employed, so you can get multiple retainer clients.

If you shoot your video horizontally in 4K you can make two versions of it: horizontal for any longform you or your clients need, then crop it vertically for social media 😉

Yeah I do do that sometimes, depends if i know that the client wants just shorts of longform as well. As when shooting vertical 4k for shorts it gives me more flexibility in post for cropping and playing with the footage

i have the same gig here in the philippines, the hardest part is the post process, specially if you have multiple clients, max i can work with is 3-4 clients in a monthly basis.

Yeah, depends on the clients and style they want as well. With photos for these type of shoots I get done with editing quite quickly (about 3-4 hours), with video if I manage to knock out about 5-10 reels in a day, but in the begining it took me a whole lot more, (+ I would overshoot a lot)

Thanks a lot!! I always shoot 10bit H265 just because i got the option to do so (comes in handy if I mess up the white balance or something), but used to shoot 8bit with the X-S10 and had no issues with it. The 8 bit on Fuji is quite good, and if your computer has issues working with H265 I would say just shoot H264 to make editing easier

Its a mix of things, firstly people in spain are quite relax and don’t care too much, secondly I try to make it really obvious that I am focusing on the food and not the clients themselves, they can see me walking with the servers and shooting the food so most people understand thats what I want to shoot. It helps that the vibe of the whole place is really chill and relaxed, and generally people like seeing their photos on the restaurants social media. I never had a bad experience. Also if I deliver clips or photos where the clients faces are visible I make sure not to keep anything unflattering. I have this approach here but I tailor it to different clients, when I shoot some more high end places I don’t even come near the tables unless the clients ask for a photo or something.

Honestly its just practice. Some times I bring a gimbal with my X-T3 on it, but hate using gimbals in these types of run and gun shoots. Here I was shooting with the X-H2s and tamron 17-70 which has IS, with IBIS+OIS turned on. Other than that just stand as stable as possible add a slight movement side to side or push in, adding an intentional slow movement helps minimise random shakes (at least for me). Other than that it's just practicing to be as stable as possible handheld. The more you do it the easier it gets.

Do you ask the customers first if it's okay to shoot some pictures and videos or were these friends/stafft etc.? Or did the restaurant do it beforehand?

I go on the vibe of the restaurant and client, most people here are really laid back and its a chill place. I never had an issue with clients being angry or upset at me for this, but I also try my best to figure out when and with which clients its ok to shoot this way

Which lens do you recommend for beginners? I have a sony a7c and a 50mm, with an apsc kit lens. Any pointers on how to progress?

I would either go for a 24-70 or a 35mm prime to pair with your 50. A 24-70 is great because it will allow you to get more options and figure out what you like in terms of focal lenghts, and if you do these types of shoots it will make it much easier to get more variations with what you create, the only thing is its going to be more expensive than the 35. I would advise to look for used gear to save on budget, and if you are getting the 24-70 look for a 2.8, if you get an f4 you will just end up selling it to get the f2.8 later on. Other than that just shoot as much as you can, everything and anything, edit a lot, try different styles and get better with the process and workflow. Good luck! You’ll do great 👍

It all depends, but the best way to go about it if if the place is in your area and you ever go there, take a few photos and send those for free with your pitch, that way you are already providing value before even asking for anything. Also when offering the first shoot I will offer to come in and shoot it and edit everything before the payment, then show them and only charge if they actually want to use the content, that way you take the pressure off of the client and make it easier for them to say yes.

As someone with no commercial experience ( I mostly do landscape and macro) how would you recommend getting into this type of photography to justify charging for your services ?

The best thing would be to find someone who needs it, offer to do a shoot and only to charge if the client likes what you deliver. That way you take the weight off of the client and make it easier for them to agree. If they are reluctant maybe offer a few free photos with the shoot and payment only if they want a full gallery. Taking the risk onto yourself takes the pressure off of the client and makes it easier to get a yes. Best case you get paid, worst case you get your first experience and a few photos for the portfolio. The other way to do it is maybe have a friend or someone who is good at cooking prepare some foot and cover the whole process of preparation and shoot the food afterwards, so you get at least some food photography down. Also the wide lenses you probably already own for landscape will come in handy for doing photos of the space. Usually when I fist go shoot a new restaurant or business where the space is important I like coming a bit before opening so I can get a few shots of just the space.

What are your T&C's with these restaurants, like turn around time, package, etc...?

We don’t have a specific pacage deal, I come and shoot for about 2-3 hours (depending if its a busy day or not, how much food is going out, etc. So deliverables can be more or less depending on how the day goes). As for delivery time, my delivery time for any short shoots like these is usually 4-7 days, but when discussing it prior I always say up to 2 weeks just in case of delays

Most of todays cameras will be able to shoot both good photos and video. I use the fujifilm X-H2s because it allows me to shoot 4k 60fps video without any additional crops. The fujifilm X-S20 allows you to do the exact same for a much cheaper price, you just loose one card slot. My recommendation would be the Fujifilm X-H2s and a sigma 18-50 f2.8, this gives you a nice and small setup that can be used for almost anything.

How do I set the right price for the customer if I have no experience working with such clients?

It depends on the area you are in and the general prices, I would ask around and talk to other shooters to see what they are charging. Or just charge an hourly rate you are happy working for.

For camera videography, using a gimbal is important; less so for photos.

I wouldn't say it's important. It depends on the look you are trying to achieve and shots you want to pull off. But for these type of shoots, when I have to switch from photo to video constantly, change settings and zoom on the fly a gimbal would be extremely counterproductive. I have used it a few times on slow days, and the footage does get a bit smoother but it is not a huge difference for short vertical videos.

I find it extremely difficult to actually find these clients. What is your process to finding them? You said you found this Lokal restaurant before the opening, is there a website or something?

For spain I used to use ProntoPro, which is a website where people needing services would post wanted ads and you can respond to them for a fee (recently they updated it and the number of listings has drastically decreased for some reason). Other than that a good strategy would be (if you carry a camera around with you) to take photos at places you visit and either send it to them for free or post on your social media and tag them, and use that as a conversation starter. If you start the relationship by already providing value it makes getting a response much easier. Also you can take a bit of the stress off the client by doing the session first and letting them decide if they want to work with you once they see the final product. If they like it they pay and if not you at least got something for the portfolio. This takes the edge off as all they have to give you is access to do the work.

Wouldn’t you want to film horizontally in 4:3, 4k for verticals? Plus most things you’re filming is moving side to side and if you shoot vertically, the sides of the video won’t be as sharp and you’ll be moving your camera vertically side to side and likely losing your composition and horizon line. Also if you shoot 4:3, you can make both vertical and horizontal footages. Just a suggestion.

not a bad idea. I do shoot open gate 6.2k (which I can only do 24 and 30 fps) sometimes when I know that the client will need both vertical and horizontal clips. With Lokal I shoot vertical because I know the footage is only going to be used for shrtform, and shooting vertical 4k 60fps gives more flexibility in post for cropping in and slow motion.

Possible to share how much to charge for this service? How to calculate pricing? Sometimes tough to justify so please throw your ideas thanks

There are multiple ways you can do it, you can break it down with time (travel, shooting, editing) and then figure out an hourly rate you are ok with. Or just have a set price per shoot. Maybe give the first client a lower price, make sure they have a good social media manager if you are not doing it, and after a few months if the social media grows well you can use that to market yourself with new clients, and justify your price by showing the previous clients growth.

Some places do it really well but others do it extremely poorly and would massively benefit from having someone doing it for them.

how the hell are you invisible? I've been shooting for 10 +years and I guess i must be handsome af, ugly af or intimidating or all lol, because people ALWAYS stop whatever they are doing when I am shooting or filming and stare at me. none of those people even looked at you once. Hahaha honestly I just force myself to look as happy and nontrethening as possible, try to look like I am prt of the staff and act as I am supposed to be there. Also I try my best to make sure everyone knows I am focusing on the food and not on the people. Also Spanish people don’t really care too much in most cases, especially in relaxed and friendly environments like this one.

I think you missed the part where he spoke specifically to how much effort to put into these jobs. Not much. Because these clients don’t need a Porsche level job. Here’s the thing money is money and paid gigs are important to building up workflows.
