We're kicking it off with one of the most core concepts of The Ride Series and that's Body Position. Being centered is where modern geometry bikes want you as a rider. There will come a time when you have to move, but waiting until that time is critical. In addition, being squatted down and in a "ready" position when there isn't anything to be ready for doesn't make sense. We see this all the time, especially with newer riders. "Heavy Feet/Light Hands" might just be the oldest mantra in MTB coaching and it's certainly one of the most effective.
Stand up and stand tall and relaxed! Now, relaxed is relative to MANY factors, but you should always be striving to be in the most comfortable and efficient position you can be in. So, how do you make this happen? Well, here are our thoughts on it:
1) Find a grass field or a very low key trail that you're comfortable with and focus on standing as tall as you can. This will look different for different athletes. Some will naturally hinge more, others will be more upright.
2) Take it to the trail on something low key that you're already comfortable with. It may take sometime, but you'll start to find the position that works for you!

Looking ahead and standing up are two things that I constantly have to remind myself to do. Also seems to apply to jumps; where I have a bad habit of squatting.

Amazing how prevalent it is in our community unfortunately. Saw you drive by in Fayetteville yesterday, enjoy your time in the Ville! I’d love to ride with you at some point during Outerbike 👊🏻

That would be great. A meeting of the minds!! I’ll be at the RipRow booth all weekend. Come on by and heat up some hydraulic oil.

Great advice! Would love to attend a session or two! I need to gain some confidence. 2 years ago I blew my left knee out trying to work on manual skills. Had a knee replacement and really wanting to get better in the single track environment. New knee feels great but the thought of going thru another operation and rehab scares the bajebies out of me.

K but what no one seems to ever address is what to do in flatter terrain. Sure if you're on a downhill most of the time this makes sense but what about if you need to almost constantly be pedaling? Pedel/stand/pedal/stand??

If you can sit down and pedal without negative consequence, then you sit down and pedal. Common sense still applies along with physics and gravity.
