GET AN EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DOG! // Housing Protections, Training Requirements, and More!

Today we are going over ESAs or Emotional Support Animals: How to qualify your pet for an ESA, the protections you receive with one, and what animals can be ESAs.
Pets are a part of the family, and yet they are the only family members that can deny you a place to live, or raise your rent due to greedy landlords. An ESA can help you fight for your right to live with your pet, with no recourse from your landlord, so it better be done correctly and legally, and not on some shady website. Watch this video to learn how!

I have lived in an apartment for a year with my dog now. He is my emotional support. Yesterday while walking him with his leash, a new neighbor was walking her dog and another neighbor's dog at the same time. Those two dogs started barking and my dog and trying to run towards him, causing her to get tangled up in their leashes and she tripped and fell. My dog started running towards them and before I knew what was happening, he jerked the leash out of my hand. He's a big dog that I adopted back in 2016, but he's a big baby...all bark, and he has never harmed another animal or person. She fell before he even got to them and I watched carefully as I ran to grab his leash. He never touched her or the other animals...just barked. She got up immediately cursing and of course I had to bring him inside instead of staying right there with him and when I went right back out to make sure she was okay. She was already gone. Today my landlord called me and told me that I have to get rid of my dog. My heart is breaking.

@@MilleniaStone After the mgr put a note on my door that stated he had to be gone by 9/14 or I would have to move, I started looking for another place to live. I haven't had any luck finding another place (I've never been evicted and have good credit, never been late on rent). Places are so hard to find. He has been staying with my son and dil since then and my anxiety and depression is thru the roof. I'm having to pay them as much as my rent every month per their landlords rules. Not a good situation. I contacted a legal aid attorney, they got back in touch one time but didn't even try to help and stopped taking my calls. It's one of the toughest decisions I've had to make but I don't want to be without a place to live. I'm still trying and won't give up.

Your dog ran at someone else causing issues, do you really think your untrained pet deserves more rights? No, quit being entitled.

@@andrewellisonlee Yes, my dog did run after two other dogs that were trying to come at us FIRST. The lady lost control of two dogs resulting in those two dogs' leashes wrapping around her legs and causing her to fall. My dog RESPONDED, but he stopped and never touched her or those two dogs. If those dogs hadn't been trying so hard to come at us, it wouldn't have happened. I'm a responsible dog owner and that's just how dogs are. It's people who can't figure it out. Now that my dog is living with my son and dil, he visits a dollar general store daily where everyone loves him and he actually greets customers and walks around with them...and many bring their pets too. No problems. Think what you like.

@@moondog9086it sound like it was figured out but if you have a letter staying he is ESA then your landlord can’t just say that, you have rights. I’m sorry this happened, i’m sorry the commenter above was insensitive, and i hope this all works out for you and your pup.

@@blackgirlemonight Thank you. I don't pay attention to insensitive comments. I do have a letter stating that my dog is my ESA (from my dr). I probably over-explained what happened that day because I was so emotionsl, but basically I was forced to rehome my dog just because he ran towards two dogs that were trying to come at us. To me, that should have been proof that he won't harm anyone....he stopped before he reached them and started wagging his tail. Never touched the dogs or the owner. Since the two dogs she was walking caused her to fall, I feel like she was so embarrassed that she really laid it on thick when she called the office mgr. My dog has been staying with my son and dil, but he needs to be at home with me. If I didn't have a fear of being evicted I'd bring him back home in a heartbeat. Had he done something or even touched them, I would understand but that's just not the case. Thank you again for your comment.

I’ve been sick for years with POTS and Lymes disease so I’m home with my dog. The landlord charges $30 a month with a $400 deposit. She’s very calm and doesn’t bite. I’ve asked some of my drs they said they didn’t know how to make her my emotional support which shocks me given all I’ve been through. Not sure how else to get her as my ESA.

I live alone with my lovely pitbull, I'm renting an apartment, but when I told them I had a pitbull, they told me that it was prohibited by the condominium because it was considered an aggressive dog. He accompanies me everywhere, we are always together keeping me company, he is a super happy and docile animal, if he becomes a person before the law, can the condominium reject me anyway?

@mikeferrini8884 Yes!! So many people forget this and just assume, "oh, it's my ESA, they can't deny me!" But, what these people forget is that an ESA or service animal can not fundamentally alter the nature of the business. Causing a property to require differnt insurance or for them to have their policy dropped entirely 100% qualifies as fundamentally altering the business.

Pitbulls are a notoriously aggressive breed, there is no way you can prove otherwise. Esa's are just glorified pets, it's not a good defense.
