How to do gesture drawings and people sketching with a brush pen. In this pen and ink drawing tutorial I share some tips on how to use a brush pen and the special properties it offers.
In this video I used a Prismacolor brush pen but understand there are several other brands which use offer competent alternatives likes Pentel, Sakura, Copic, Fabercastell, Derwent, etc. So explore and experiment and have fun.

"A brush pen is like a brush in pen form", mind blown lol. Good vid though. Do like using brush pen for practice every now and then but it isn't very forgiving.

lmao im a year late, but i think brush pens are much more forgiving than micron pens or whatever. most mistakes look intentionally artistic with brusg pens. atleast, in my experience.

I really appreciate that you encourage and are not afraid to work through the creative process of letting a drawing develop without being too rigid. For example, brushing a line and trying to visualize what that line looks like or can represent, and exploring that. It is a part of art that is often neglected.

I admire your work so much, you do it without it looking like a struggle. I’ve always been a pencil person but now quick drawings similar to these are what I want to learn to do. I’ve been obsessively agonizing over every mark I put on paper my whole life and feel I’m missing some fun and not learning much from my tense, overworked struggles. I bought some brush pens to see if that helps me loosen up.

Hi Alphonse ,love your vids, and can watch them over and over.Oh Yeah I just ordered your book last night from Amazon and can't wait to get it. Keep doin' what your doin' I also use the prismacolor brush pens ,but find them challenging to master, but the colored pencils ,especially the blk. are excellent to work with. I don't know if you were around when they had a guy on TV that drew 5 random lines and someone in the audience would tell him what to make out of them...That was what really got me into drawing and have been ever since.I just didn't stay with it,now I will but haven't in a long time and you inspire me back to what I want to do..so I say thanks P.S. I really dig the music you play in the background....

Oh how I love the brush pen..it made me a better artist. Its exactly like he said. I used to try to use it in a precise way and it drove me crazy! Then I just stopped being so serious about it and just filled pages with "nonsense". Completely changed my way of drawing and helped me when I was frustrated with proportions and accuracy.Gesture, expression and flow are just as important as anything else! Sometimes when you hit a wall go back try something new and don't care about the results. That all being said I have to try to find refillable pens, using up brush pens seriously hurts...right in the wallet!

Nice video! They sell brush pens at Flying Tiger. It's a set of two, one with a fine tip, the other with a broader tip, for only €2/$2. They're great for sketching. I also have a Pentel brush pen, which is more expensive, but that one actually comes with a brush tip (i.e. with individual hairs) and refills.

I love using brush pens they're very relaxing to use, I like using them for my Chinese brush art, normal ink pens just don't have the same effect of getting the smooth and relaxing flow of the lines (as Chinese art demands) as well as the brush pens do. It's nice not having to worry about buying ink and brushes separately from one another, getting brush pens is like getting everything in one, with out all the mess. And we use the same pen brands so that's cool! ✒✏

I used to be more comfortable with "letting go" and being abstract in my drawing; I'm not sure if going into a different major instead of Art changed that (but now that I've graduated I'm all in "art mode"). I'm used to drawing without pencil sketching (for myself at least), I tend to stick to technical or ballpoint pen. The brush in general intimidates me but this tutorial really helps; thanks. =]

I am so glad I came across your videos. Thanks so much for your time, work, effort, and the sharing of your knowledge. Maybe a little off topic, but watching these videos on gesturing I find many parallels to freely improvised music. :0) Thanks again.

Great advice. I find it very difficult to improvise when drawing; always want to control everything. Will have to give this a try and see if I can break some of my inhibitions.

Love your videos man! Really helped me out Alot! I just wanted to know, what would you recommend? A Pentel pocket brush pen, or your Prismacolor brush pen? Besides that, keep doing what you do! Can't wait for your book!!

What brush is best for you probably depends on what you're looking for! Do you prefer stiff tips, soft tips, or somewhere in the middle? How waterproof do you need the ink to be? There are art/calligraphy supply reviews on youtube too, that go in depth comparing and contrasting brush pens with their pros and cons. Alfonso's favorite is one of my favorites too, but I prefer stiffer, water-resistant brush pens, so that's probably a coincidence lol Sorry for the wall of text!
