    Teaching simple and negative gerunds is quite easy. Then come passive and perfect forms. As I discussed at the very end of this lesson, I often run into conflicting explanations and a range of terms. Some call gerunds "nominal -ing clauses," and what I call phrases, others call clauses. It gets confusing when we get into overlapping forms with reduced adverb clauses and the formation of complements. In the end, I just want to help people understand what they hear and see, and of course, I want to help learners form clear sentences in English. If people want to use different terminology, it's okay. Take care! Happy teaching!

    Another jewel from Jennifer! Thank you Jennifer! Here are some of my examples! Working long hours isn't a good thing to do as it might ruin one's health in the long run. I love watching Jennifer's video lessons because they are full of amazing information. Jennifer is good at teaching advanced grammar. Jennifer's instructions, telling how we should speak English, are going to help us grow for all times to come. Learning a skill isn't sitting as a passive observer. I wish I could tell your son that he is lucky for being taught by an amazing teacher. So, being told what to do shouldn't be a big deal at least in his case. If only he could understand this. Having done my work i went out for a walk. Having been taught how to bake a cake, baking one was a piece of cake for me. Being encouraged by the teacher, he made progress by leaps and bounds. Ali's constant crying ruined his mother's sleep last night. His constant crying ruined his mother's sleep last night. The son's constant crying ruined his mother's sleep last night. Ali telling me what to eat gets me annoyed. Him telling me what to eat gets me annoyed. While watching tv, i made coffee. While i was watching tv, i made coffee. After working the whole day, i felt exhausted. After I worked the whole day, I felt exhausted. Before going out for shopping, i turned off the gas. Before I went out for shopping, I turned off the gas. I like people helping others. It is great being loved by your parents. Please check my grammar! Thanks for yet another awesome lesson! Stay safe!

    Hi Hilal. What would a grammar lesson be without grammar enthusiasts like you! :) Here are my comments and suggestions: Jennifer's instructions, telling how we should speak English, are going to help us grow for all times to come. >> That's a reduced adjective clause. I see "telling" as a present participle. "which tell how..." Learning a skill doesn't imply sitting as a passive observer. I wish I could tell your son that he is lucky to be taught by an amazing teacher. So, being told what to do shouldn't be a big deal, at least in his case. If only he could understand this. :) Having done my work, I went out for a walk. > I see that as a reduced adverb clause. It's now an participial/adverb phrase. Having been taught how to bake a cake, baking one was a piece of cake for me. >> Repetitious, but funny! I like it. :) Ali telling me what to eat annoys me. Him telling me what to eat annoys me. While watching TV, I made coffee. While I was watching TV, I made coffee. After working the whole day, I felt exhausted. After I worked the whole day, I felt exhausted. Before going shopping, I turned off the gas. Before I went shopping, I turned off the gas. >> All good examples of full adverb clauses reduced to adverb phrases. Great examples overall! Well done.

    Good question! I'll consider this as a topic. In short, the gerund usually refers to an activity: golfing, swimming, walking. The noun is the abstract concept, the name. In the case of "a swim" and "a walk," it's a specific event. Let's go for a swim/a walk. VS I enjoy swimming/walking.

    Hello. My comments and suggestions: 1-) I agree. I like music videos. 2-) I think you can just say "herbal tea." I'm not sure what "mixed" implies. 3-) Note the word order: A major cause of stress is the environment IN which one lives. - Very insightful! You can add a thought with a gerund: Being in a toxic environment is not healthy. 4-) Success in life results from being organized, being conscientious and learning effectively. (The word order is better this way, but I'm not sure "learning effectively" is the best way to express the idea. Maybe "constantly learning.") 5-) According to multiple reports, walking at a relaxed and gentle pace may progressively diminish the likelihood of suffering from cardiovascular diseases. So true! Well written. 6-) The new neighbors are awful. Their making noise/Their being noisy at all hours drives me crazy. I really want to tell them that their frequent partying/ their throwing frequent parties has got to stop. 7-) Well done. 8-) My country takes pride in having fixed the serious traffic problem and providing the public with better health care service. Hello Jennifer, your concept of the perfect gerund is clear to me. But what between a simple gerund and a perfect one should I use when using words like regret? Like, I regret doing this. Or I regret having done this. The reason I am doubtful about this is that I often hear people use "I regret doing that" even though they did it in the past.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Akshat. If the timeline is clear, you can use a simple gerund. I regret hurting you. I didn't mean to. I regret not studying. I should have prepared more. I regret not being there for you when you needed me. I didn't put a lot of emphasis on perfect gerunds because we don't use them as often. You'll like encounter reduced adverb clauses (to phrases) more: Having been told many times about the dangers of winter, the hikers knew what precautions to take.

    Hi Jennifer, Why do we sometimes need to use a gerund after preposition and other time we need to use a noun? For example: A hotel manager is someone who is responsible for " running " a hotel . A lifeguard is someone who is responsible for " the safety " of the swimmers . We don't say for " safing the swimmers.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question. If your idea is based on an action, that action has a verb. Then we form a gerund. Responsible for running a hotel. But nouns or anything that behaves like a noun can be an object of a preposition: Responsible for hotel operations. Note that "operation" is a choice for us because this word family includes two different forms for the noun and verb. "Run" doesn't have a noun in the same word family. We're forced to create a noun (a verbal noun = a gerund) with -ing. Responsible for the safety. Here "safe" doesn't have a verb in the same word family, so we can't form a gerund, but we can use the noun "safety."

    Hello. I see "calling" as the gerund. About what? About calling. So "calling" is the object of the preposition. We can make the gerund possessive: Maureen's calling. (She's the one doing the action.) In everyday English, many use simply the name rather than a possessive form: Maureen calling. Yes, phrasal verbs can form gerunds: [Growing up in Pennsylvania] made me love winter. = gerund subject Regards!

    "Myself" can be used as a reflexive pronoun: I looked at myself in the mirror. "By myself" can mean that you do something without help or that you are alone: I fixed the leaking pipe by myself. I sat by myself at the dinner table.

    There's a lot more to gerunds than meet the eye. I don't see any confusion with your example: While I was relaxing on the beach, I got a nice tan (Complex sentence with a subject and verb combination in both clauses). While relaxing on the beach, I got a nice tan. ("While relaxing on the beach" = Reduced adjective clause which becomes a phrase) The second half of the sentence is obviously the independent clause, for it can stand alone as a sentence. Relaxing on the beach is a way to gain a good tan. (Gerund phrase) Task A 1. Watching television is a great way to relax. 2. In the early morning hours, I enjoy winding down. 3. A major cause of stress is focussing on failure. 4. Success in life results from working towards goals. Task B (I am not entirely sure what you're asking as it looks like the answers are in the questions.) 1. I like being told what to do. 2. I am never afraid of being judged harshly. Task C The new neighbors are awful. Their arguing drives me crazy. I really want to tell them that their fighting has to stop. Task D 1. My country takes pride in having done so much to combat climate change. 2. Having been taught at a young age to respect my elders made me the person I am today.

    Thank you for watching, support my ideas, and completing the tasks! One correction: The phrases with "while" and other conjunctions are (as I see them) adverb phrases reduced from adverb clauses (not adjective clauses). But I see a similar pattern with reduced adjective clauses. Reduction of adverb and adjective clauses often leaves us with participles. Task A. 1. Agreed, unless you're watching the news. Then you get all riled up! 2. That means you go to sleep late, right? 3. Agreed. Interesting note: double s = UK/ single s = US (focussing/focusing) 4. Yes. Setting goals, creating a plan, and following through. Task B. Yes. I just wanted viewers to type out the full answers to reinforce the structure. 1. If it's a task that's completely new to me, however, I appreciate being guided. 2. I think sometimes we know we're going to be judged, so we have to be prepared for it mentally. Task C. May we all have peaceful, friendly neighbors! Task D. 1. Carbon-zero by 2050, right? 2. My other example: Having been taught to keep everything tidy and organized has made me the person I am today. :)

    Hi Arun. Thank you for watching my new lesson. I know you like delving into grammar as well and, like me, you challenge yourself to hone your skills. Learning is a lifelong journey. That encompasses the lessons we learn as parents, too. I'm learning to give my children more independence, but it's not easy at this age. Congratulations on your son's recent marriage!

    @@Englishwithjennifer thank you for your nice reply.. I was taught English by American Jesuits in my school in India. Their words and style of teaching grammer resonates in my ears today even after leaving school more than 50 years ago. Later, i was taught by experiened journos on hows of writing short and sweet pieces. I have followed your videos for a long time. They have removed my fear of reading long texts. Now i grasp the grammer, the clauses and their connections to each other. The meaning flows into the mind quickly. And once you get the hang of what the writer is saying, reading the rest is easy. (in fact, i have picked up Persian, my current love, really fast after getting a grip on grammar structures.) So at age 69, i am learning from You! . Thanks Jennifer, and lots of love from India to your two kids and husband. Thanks b

    Jennifer, I know you avoid any political statements in your videos, and I see Putin as a person who doesn't care about anything except his own ego. The people in Russia are suffering because of his pride, just like Venezuela, where the leader doesn't care about the well-being of his people. So, I just wanted to express my views to you and your audience, as this is a sad period in history. I admire the people in Ukraine for their courage and commitment to saving their country. I don't believe this comment will be published, but please forward it to Jennifer, as I am her long-time fan. Maurice

What I've seen on TV and on social media tells me that Ukrainians have a lot of courage and love for their country. I've reached out to those I know and hope they remain safe. I hope the conflict will end soon. Until then, I'll continue to offer my videos lessons and live instruction. All the learning communities I create online are welcoming ones. People can create peace and positive spaces, and that's what we do when we learn together here on KZread, and that's also what I do when I run my Patreon classes. All are welcome.
