Have you ever heard of Germknödel? They're these sweet yeast dumplings from Germany and Austria that are like a vacation in your mouth. They're soft, fluffy, and smell amazing. Germknödel a staple at European ski resorts and are perfect for a cold winter day, but honestly, I love them any time of the year.
These delicious pillowy dumplings come filled or unfilled and are traditionally topped with a rich vanilla sauce and a sweet poppy-seed-sugar topping. I personally enjoy them most served with homemade fruit compote on top. Trust me, if you haven't tried them yet, you're missing out!

@lordnat1968 Actually it's Bohemian. Both Bavaria and Austria just adopted the dish. So it belongs to both cultures alike.

Very nice demonstration, much appreciated. Does this dough work with savoury fillings as well? This would be great with a homemade chunky applesauce to go with tea/coffee but I would also love to make this with a ricotta-scallion-egg-cheese mixture wrapped in a thin slice of ham.

As always, you have wonderful ideas for variations. I really appreciate your creativity. The dough would work for savory fillings but I would only use 1 tsp. of sugar.
They are super filling, but I haven't eaten any in ages, I prefer them with cherry preserves and cinnamon sugar sprinkles.

Oh yes, that is true. I think no one can eat more than one of these delicious dumplings. Cherry preserve and cinnamon sugar sounds LECKER!

That looks delicious! Here in Rhineland-Palatinate, our Dampfnudeln are much more dense and delicious too, but I really want to try the Bavarian ones. :) What confuses me though is that they are made in almost the same way, but they are so different.
Germknödel is from Vienna/Austria and has nothing to do with Germany or Bavaria!

The Austrian cuisine is heavily influenced by the Habsburg Monarchy. Germknödel are a traditional staple in Bavarian cuisine.
