well it will be used into the 2030´s. currently the Wiesel 1 MK and Wiesel 1 TOW are getting upgraded. The TOW is going to be replaced with MELLS (SPIKE LR) and the MK might get an MK30-2ABM upgrade similar to Puma. Both will recive 3rd gen thermal imagers etc.

A lot of work has been put into the LuWa vehicle but all things considered the original short Wiesel-1 remains the best vehicle for air-mobile forces and for light reconnaissance in my view and should be far cheaper to acquire and operate so can be purchased in large numbers. The original Wiesel-1 design just needs modernising with modern communications, sensors, light weight composite armour and a more modern and stabilised turret fitted with a suitable 20 to 30mm cannon. The cannon variant could also be fitted with a co-axial 7.62mm gun to improve the usefulness of the vehicle. For improved stability when firing the gun and to provide a little more internal space, perhaps another road wheel could be added to the Wiesel-1 configuration which now has only 3 small road wheels plus the large return roller which also is a road wheel which would then have 4 small road wheels plus the return roller. The Wiesel-2 has 5 small road wheels plus the return roller but this vehicle may be a little too long for the cannon variant which requires good agility. A similarly modernised Wiesel-2 would better suit the role of ATGM carrier (Spike/MELLS), ambulance, SAM launcher and mortar carrier for example. Perhaps improved mine and IED protection can be designed in but only if this can be done without increasing weight significantly. Please don't go down the wrong path by choosing the LuWa vehicle. www.military-today.com/missiles/wiesel_1_tow.htm

The is a modernisation program for the Wiesel for, for exampel the TOW is replaced by MELLS / Spike. But due to payload and space of the Wiesel a lot of the points you mentioned can not be upgraded and replaced by new features. So it is more to clear the obsolescence. For the LuWa, it is not that big you might think. It still can be transported inside the Ch53 and has nearly the same weights and dimensions like the Wiesel2. And it is still only a technology demonstrator. The final vehicle will be a worthy successsor of the Wiesel, even when it will look different. Have in mind, that it also is a vehicle developed dedicated for the airborne infantry.

I am suggesting redesign and optimisation with new systems based on the existing mechanical design which is simple and cost effective.

Yes the Wiesel-1 is the best for Airborne but Ukraine is not in an airborne War... The 2 troops or extra ammo or ability to evacuate the wounded of the Wiesel-2 with a 25 or 30mm gun would be a bonus to Ukraine's war... and as I said they could produce Thousands... Though maybe Poland would lend a hand in the endeavor as they could use them as well.. Thanks!

OK---. Nick; the US airborne already has mini tanks of sorts in the Striker and Bradley. They have found out in Iraq and Afghanistan that the 25mm and the Strikers new 30mm turret is just not up to the job of neutralizing really HARD points. The 105mm neutralizes just about anything and from 4 and 5 times the range of the 30mm and 25mm respectively...

  • @nickc7320

@@1701Larry I've been around for a few years, but I have yet to see a Bradley get airdropped, and neither can a stryker. Before the striker with the 105 was selected to support the airborne, it competed against a tank that could be dropped with a 105mm main gun. The AGS/MGS/M8 system was air-droppable, unlike the stryker MGS. The stryker MGS was only in service for around 15 years before the army decided to drop it. It was officially out of service at the end of 2022. The MPF, the new army light tank, is still not airdroppable. It has other things going for it, but still not airdroppable. But if the idea is that the airborne will capture an airfield we can land on for the new tank to offload from the c-17, then it will work. But what do I know? I only gave my whole adult life to the army.

That was the rumor, and that request has been around a long time, but it keeps getting ignored, The MPF was never intended for airborne operation, which is what people assumed it was for, but the reality of the program parameters were always for a heavy weapon platform to support normal infantry operation. Just like the Stryker MGS. This was mentioned in the Chieftains initial review of the MPF

OK---------. The AWC Wiesel is Just So Cute.. But they look like something that Ukraine Would love to have all 500 of the Wiesel 1 and 2's... With external fuel Cells off the back of the little tank like M-113s giving it a decent range they would give Ukraine a Huge Boost to their Campaign to take back All of Ukraine as they could go places the Humvee style Armored Gun Trucks they are using now in great numbers... Germany could also start sending the Wiesel's replacement straight to Ukraine from the Factory Floor... LOL!!! Ya, sure... But the old Wiesels will do just fine if they get enough of them...

The Polish had one during the begining of WW2 that the Germans called Cockroach . It carried a 20mm cannon and had success against early model German Panzers...Maybe the Germans could give their Wiesels to Ukraine to use as recon and or as Hunter killer teams against Russian armor..

Germany learned its lesson from the Polish cockraoches in ww2 they were tiny little tanks with speed and a 30mm cannon they destroy big mighty German panzers, and the the tanks had a hard time with them, they were to quick to catch and shoot and were to maneuverable to be a ke to get a shot on them by the time the tanks turret has got around the cockroach is already blasting its sides and rear end in and fked off 😂

Most of the german tanks back then were cockroaches too, like the very big and mighty Pz. I and II. Only a few hundreds were bigger than that.
