Germany orders Israeli Arrow 3 rockets for its Sky Shield air defense system | DW News

The Sky Shield air defense system initiated by Germany intends to bolster NATO's protective capacity over Europe. The invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops has brought war back to Europe - and thrown the defensive capabilities of NATO and Europe into the spotlight. Now, rearmament efforts are underway and new defense strategies are being prepared. This includes protection against possible Russian missile attacks in case the war over Ukraine escalates and other European countries could come into confrontation with Moscow.
However, NATO's protective shield for Europe has some holes. The air defense system, which Germany launched last October, is intended to close them. At that time, on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Brussels, 15 countries signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a European air defense system. Along with Germany, the signatories were: Belgium, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, the UK, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary. Later, Denmark, Sweeden, Austria and Switzerland also joined the initiative.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, of the Social Democrat party (SPD), spoke of an "increase in safety for all of Europe," and argued that a European air defense system would cost less and be more effective than if every individual country set up their own expensive and complex systems. However, France, Italy and Poland are yet to join the initiative. Paris criticized that technology from the US and Israel would be purchased for the project.
The goal of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI) is to achieve the most well-coordinated defense system against short, medium and long-range threats from the air. On its website, the German Defense Ministry defined short-range as up to 15 kilometers (9 miles) in distance across land and 6 kilometers in altitude. The medium range is 15-50 kilometers wide and up to 25 kilometers high. Long-range is more than 50 kilometers wide and up to 35 kilometers in altitude.

    For those of you who don't understand how wide is 2,400 km range, if Arrow 3 is placed in the middle of Germany it covers the whole of Europe and all of Moscow, Saint Petersburg all the way up to half of Turkey and parts of Algeria, Libya and the whole of Tunisia. This is how vast the radius is. The speed of the Arrow 2 is Mach 9, now that was more than 20 years ago, However this is Arrow 3, one can assume the speed is more than Mach 10 and has an flight altitude of more than 100 km

  • @Faulpelz55

    @Faulpelz55

    7 ай бұрын

    @@Zei33And that’s the key of SkyNext. It is just a normed communication system. The German IRIS-T is called the most sophisticated aerial reconnaissance at the time with an effective range of 450km. A battery of these and other recon systems spread over Europe with Defense batteries spread across the continent will create a quite dense mesh. The big advantage of the whole system is, that integration of domestic developments is easy. So if a German recon system detects a predator with Paris as target, a Polish air defense system can intercept. And by now many European manufacturers already made their own systems compatible with SkyNext. So France‘s criticism about Germany forcing Europe to buy domestic German equipment is false. They are free to develop, produce and buy whatever they want but need to integrate the communication standard to be an effective part of the mesh. France is just pissed off because Germany stepped up before France had another chance to develop another over complicated system with decades of delay and exploding costs - like most of the time. Surprisingly the Italian as well as the Swedish, Swiss, Austrian, Polish, Czech, Slovakian and as far as I know also the British manufacturers hopped on years ago. By the way, German Defense Ministry already mentioned that they bought Arrow 3 to bridge the gap for a domestic European system wich now can be developed exactly to the needs. We just didn’t have enough time for France to finally sort their minds and come to a conclusion. They build some really good stuff, but the time and money they need to decide is hideous - mostly because even in cooperations they want to do everything in their own.

While the United States has not been directly involved in the development of the Arrow 3 system, there is a history of collaboration and support between the two countries in the field of missile defense. Key points regarding U.S. involvement in missile defense collaboration with Israel include: Financial Support: The United States has provided significant financial assistance to Israel for the development and procurement of missile defense systems, including the Arrow 3. This support is part of a broader U.S. commitment to Israel's security. Technical Collaboration: U.S. defense companies have collaborated with Israeli defense firms on various aspects of missile defense technology. This collaboration often involves sharing expertise and technical know-how. Testing and Evaluation: Israel has conducted tests of the Arrow 3 system with the cooperation and support of the United States. These tests are aimed at assessing the system's effectiveness and capabilities. Strategic Cooperation: The United States and Israel share a common interest in countering ballistic missile threats in the Middle East. Both countries have worked together on missile defense strategies and capabilities.

They still good for industrial production, from someone who lives in the UK, there manufactured items are WAY better than something with "Made in China" written on the box, it lasts longer and easier to use, well built too with a "Made in Germany"

This also applies to DW's journalism, especially in light of the Holocaust.
