Why US' Most Powerful Bunker Buster Bomb May Not Penetrate Iran's Latest Nuclear Facility

Recent satellite images show that Tehran is building a nuclear facility deep in the earth in Zagros mountains in central Iran. As per reports, the facility is likely beyond the range of a last-ditch United States weapon designed to destroy such sites.
The US had developed a bomb, known as the GBU-57, specifically to be able to destroy an earlier underground facility, at Fordow. However, experts say that the GBU-57 may no longer be enough to destroy Iran’s nuclear hideout in the Zargos mountains.

Not only are the Iranian nuclear sites too deep for America's best bunker busters to even penetrate, but they're built underneath mountain ranges & protected by layers of military grade concrete. Just to drop bombs on such a site, aircraft would have to constantly evade incoming air defense missiles while carrying their maximum payload which is extremely difficult. Also most of Iran's missile assets are either mobile or themselves launched from silos connected to underground facilities.

they dont have to reach a mile down they just need to hit the 4 openings to the tunnel, causing them all to collapse, then no one or nothing gets in or out. Having 200 feet of solid concrete or rock blasted to bits causing a massive cave in at all the entrances ensures they are cut off.

No reason? Iran is the biggest sponsor of world terrorism, has killed thousands of their own people, has backed genocidal wars in Syria and Yemen and has repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel. The US use of atomic bombs in Japan was to force Japan to end a war they started. Otherwise, the US would have had to launch an invasion of the Japanese mainland which would have caused far more casualties on both sides.

Logically, yes, it is true that NO NATION should be deprived of nuclear technologies, which include nukes. But if your Alpha Male --- for some Bronze Age religious reasons --- keeps babbling daily and weekly that, say, Israel or the US right to exist should not be allowed... well, there's no way either country is going to allow you to have nukes, so you could carry out your threats. Neither the US nor Israel, both nuclear states, keep babbling they're going to end this of that nation's existence. Not for show, not for Trump like Reality TV, and not for real. We don't know whether what Trump or those Bronze Age religious nuts are "true or not;" so we simply have to assume the worse & HOPE it's not true. Assuming they're just joking... well, that's a bad mistake to make, if it turned out they are serious. For example, if it turned out Trump's serious about him having magical power (he's above the law) & all he had to do was just THINK ABOUT CLASSIFIED INFORMATION/documents and it's all de-classified and HE, then, could show it to anyone he wanted... well, in the real world we live in --- even if not in the Right Wing Alternate Reality Trump & Co live in --- such BS could cost significant damage to America's intelligence gathering capability. Assuming Iran's Bronze Age leaders are just JOKING... trying to scare Israel but "they would never use nukes against another country, LIKE THE SATANIC AMERICANS," ad nauseam... and it turned out, one day, they evaporated Israel... well, you can't undo that, can you? So, then, it's EASIER and safer for more than one nation... if the US and Israel take out Iran's nuclear facilities TODAY... so we don't have to keep our fingers crossed they're "just joking about evaporating Israel from the face of the earth..." As we could never know, if or when Trump's best pal, Rocketman in North Korea could use NUKES against Japan or South Korea, either.... in that case, we now HAVE TO keep our finger crossed... hoping they wouldn't do it... Anyway... yes, the US is the only nation has ever used nukes on another country; but that's part of a world war --- with BOTH Russia and China as ALLIES of the West --- that had already killed over 50M by then and likely will kill many hundreds of thousands more of just Japanese and Americans, if they had stayed on just conventional.

Which record are you blathering about? IRAN has explicitly and repeatedly stated since 1979 that their goal is the destruction of the one and only Jewish country in the World; at the moment they are raging war against Israel via proxy: -- Hezbollah in Lebanon -- the Palestinian Islamic Jihad -- The Revolutionary Guards in Syria -- Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israel has been attacked 6 times by literally all the Arabs countries, and also by Iran, since 1948. It survived, but it cannot survive a nuclear attack, got it? Anyway, Israel has enough nukes to destroy the entire Middle East, which means that if Iran uses the nuke, Israel will not die alone. Got it, axx-XXLE

@J Wick you're assuming it's 1 long isolated tunnel when it could be a spiderweb of routes throughout the mountains. Also there more being built it's not just the ones u know about. I'm from kermanshah.. west of iran and they've been doing alot of mountain tunnels here too.. mostly for weapons not for nuclear activities. This early strike on our land shoulda been done ages ago not now when iran has loads of deals with other countires. Specially now they're OK with the saudis.

It seems you are ignorant or ILL-INFORMED OR KEPT IN THE DARK of military engineering. We always build as many entrances and exits to all bunkers and missiles silos of which more than 50% are far away in hidden and well secured areas. Always make sure to follow the rule of thumb. Follow the T tunnel section design in which the upper section of the T is both the entrance and exit but the bottom vertical section is the entrance and exit. Always make sure that any attempt to make a direct hit against an entrance will be diverted by the T tunnel section design. Now the next modification is a zigzagging pattern done to the upper section of the T section design on both the left side and right side. This was done by both Russia and America, mostly by Russia which makes us Russians wonder why America never bothered to add that particular design modifications in the T tunnel section design. The T tunnel section design allows the blast to past from one side to the next while missing the bottom vertical section which is the main entrance.

The Iranian nuclear program is an existential threat to Israel and the moderate Arab countries. Nuclear sites are spread over vast areas of Iran, which makes it very difficult to disrupt the nuclear program by military means. Israel alone does not have this potential. The United States (after its experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan) does not want to return to adventures that are costly in terms of human and material costs. The best solution (perhaps the only one) lies in establishing a nuclear deterrence equation on the opposite side of the Gulf, which will also serve as a center for information gathering and an advanced warning platform.

Iran nuclear facilities are not safe not even remotely. If they are eventually targeted especially by the West they will be destroyed one way or another but if I was Iran I would be more worried about Israel because they only have one guaranteed way of destroying Iranian nuclear facilities and it doesn’t end well for Iran.

@Don Atta Yeah. But given Iran's behavior, no reasonable person can believe they are just looking for self defense. They're looking for weapons that will give them some blackmail ability. The west, and particularly Israel, cannot allow Iran to go nuclear. The implications would be horrible. War with Iran is coming. Probably too late to avoid it now. And I think it's going to be soon. America is scared of Iran. Israel is no match to Iran, they know it all they are banking on is having the US fight together with them. According to a study conducted by the Pentagon, Iran would kill over 70 000 US soldiers in a week. You best believe Israel would loose 100 000 in a week and that small country would be set on fire by Iran making it easier for Palestinians to take back their land.
