German warship makes tight turns in high winds ⚓️ 🇩🇪 🇬🇧

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Watch as the FGS Hamburg conducts tight turns while inbound to Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth, UK. This was training being provided to the Germany Navy by the Royal Navy.
FGS Hamburg (F220) is a Sachsen-class frigate of the German Navy. The frigate is one of many German warships to participate in Fleet Operational Sea Training (FOST) provided by the Royal Navy, usually out of His Majesty's Naval Base Devonport. This includes making tight turns around Plymouth Sound in all weathers; such as high winds and rain.

What is the manoeuvre called, is it a Williamson turn? It's always amazing to see a ship weighing 6,000 tonnes and 140 metres long turn around in such a small area, and the Sachsen class doesn't even have a bow thruster! Thirty years ago, I was allowed to sail on a cargo ship that was perhaps 90 metres long during a change of anchorage. We sailed into an even tinier harbour basin and I thought it would be impossible to ‘park’ the ship properly there, but the captain moved the ship with a calmness of mind, as if he were pushing a shopping trolley back into the berth. Incredible people, these sailors!

Being a citizen of Hamburg I must say that our grey motoryacht behaves quite well in the maneuvers (at least by watching from the outside, maybe there was some yelling on the bridge...). But - there is always a but - I noticed corrosion marks here and there. So there is some room for improvement, I believe. Go on fellows, keep her tidy! 🙂 And it is almost a shame that we couldn't watch the moment of docking.

Not really. These ships have great maneauverability and everything, so no real danger. Also, that wind iskt really much on a coast. Only like 6bft to 7bft. Maybe in stronger gusts 8bft. It has 2 x 4 starters for Harpoon Anti ship missiles. Besides this, the tactical role of this ship is air defence in a squad of warships in NATO missions, and defence of the Baltic Sea and neighboring countries against ballistic missiles. Regard it a seaborne Patriot system with a 500 km range radar, delivering air defence data also for other units.

Dude, thats a modern warship. Don't compare it to World of Warships vessels. The cannon is just to scare flies away. The Missiles make the difference.
