I agree if you haven't done the German Twisted Cast On before it looks very intimidating. It works best if you break down the steps in the process and that usually makes it easier. The Long Tail Cast On is a great method to learn before the German though. Did you know that there is a purl version of both of those?

Indeed, this is why I decided to show both, step by step. First, the long tail, which I have been doing for years, and then, the new one 😉
Thank you for this tutorial about this cast on. You do an amazing job showing this cast on so I can quickly learn! Also I loved the magic loop tutorial!! Thank you very much!!

Thank you for your lovely comment! I really appreciate it 🥰
You're demo is wonderful! I love that you go through the motions many times, slowly enough so that I found myself mentally following along and had the technique memorized by the end. I do toe-up socks with Magic Loop on circulars, and never hats, but it will still be good for other projects. 🥰

What are the benefits of doing the German twisted cast-on? Even when you demonstrate it so well, it looks so unnecessarily complicated!

It’s much more stretchy, so it’s perfect for socks, hats, any sort of cuff. It’s not so complicated, you’ll see when you try it!

By doing the "twist" by going around at first you are adding just a little bit more yarn to the cast on. When it gets pulled the twist kind of acts as a spring. If you go up a needle size with a long tail cast on yes you will have a wider cast on edge but depending on how many needle sizes you go up the cast on edge will get loose. The German Twisted gives you the extra length plus a little twist to help take up the slack.
It will take me a week to learn this cast on method lol

I’m sure it will be quicker! Give it try, and you’ll see how stretchy it is 😊 Happy knitting 🧶
It looks great and I will have to try it. How do you decide how much yarn you will need for cast on?
