German Train FULL Tour (Weiden to Ramstein) - Train Travel in Germany For Beginners

Hi. I’m Daniel, but you can call me DT. I make videos. Let’s talk about Train Travel in Germany for Beginners.
This video will help you navigate your way through Germany and the rest of Europe by train.

Some things I forgot to mention!
Always take a picture or screenshot of your ticket. You never know if you'll be in a rural area with a terrible data connection. That actually happens quite a bit when you're riding through tunnels and in the middle of no where locations throughout the country.
This is especially helpful when you have a Bayern Pass and you only have one ticket for X amount of people. Take a picture of the ticket and share it on your phone with everyone else riding with you.
The Germans are VERY law abiding, especially when it comes to having a ticket on the train. Kein Ticket, Kein Fahren! Aka No Ticket, No Go!
Also, luggage tips. There are dedicated luggage racks on the train for small or large suitcases. Many luggage pieces look the same, so make sure to keep an eye on your luggage when people are entering/exiting the train.
Lastly, if you're in a hurry, get your luggage and stand at the exit doors at least 10mins before the train stops so you're first out the door! If not, you'll be stuck in a line waiting for others to exit.

    I just got back from 21 days in Europe, including Germany. We travelled entirely by trains. Great system there. One day we had 4 trains to take. Our 2nd train was delayed and we missed our connections. Just got on another train. Wasn't 100% sure if it was okay because it was a different train company. But it was fine. We also had 1 train cancelled and we got another train no problem with our ticket. Travelled from Hallstatt Austria to Nuremberg. Then to Frankfurt.. Then to Amsterdam. Great trip.

    Usually the "saver"/"sparpreis" tickets require you to be on a specific train. The more expensive tickets allow you to take any train on the same route, or even any route. If you can't make the route you bought and it's their fault, all train restrictions ("Zugbindung") are cancelled and you can take ANY train that helps get to your destination (not just the suggested trains in the app). Last time this happened to me, the app told so, but maybe that wasn't the case 2 years ago.

    one thing my friends and i do when traveling in a group, buy the Bayern ticket and screenshot the ticket QR and send it to everyone listed on the ticket. We have lost tickets before and that was not fun. also, if the ticket is purchased online, anyone with the info can log in and view the ticket so thats helpful as well. you shouldve warned viewers about the attendees checking tickets and the fines associated with not having one. (and thanks for the train splitting mention) recently learned that one in Czech 😖

    For anyone watching in 2024, you can buy a Deutschlandticket for any calendar month for 50€ for one person to travel on any local or regional public transport in Germany for that month. It is a monthly subscription so remember to cancel it - if you aren't living in Germany. ICE trains are NOT allowed, you will have to pay an extra fare for those. The group sitting next to me last time made this mistake but the conductor was polite to them and let them pay the ICE fare.

Everyone says to use the train but when I try to book tickets it seems so expensive. Should we by some kind of train pass or is the best, most affordable way to buy your tickets at the station?

  • @DTVDanielTelevision

    @DTVDanielTelevision

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey! Thanks for watching! Here's my recommendations: Germany has special tickets you can buy that'll save you money for group travel. If you live in Bavaria, check out the Bayern Ticket. If outside of Bavaria, check out the regional offers, such as the "Across the Country" ticket. You can find all that info on my blog: www.dtvdanieltelevision.com/2022/05/08/train-travel-in-germany/ Sometimes buying a train ticket with an agent at the station is cheaper, but it's hit or miss. I've found good deals with my train station agents at Weiden. You could also find cheap travel offers through EuroTrip Adventures. I'm assuming you're military? They have pick up locations outside many of the bases here. You can learn about that here: www.dtvdanieltelevision.com/2022/05/25/budget-family-travel-for-us-military-pcsing-to-germany/ If outside of Germany, take advantage of all the "hop on, hop off" buses. It gives you a quick "windshield tour" of the city, or you could get on one with an open roof. It's also nice to map out where you want to go before hand. Lastly, you can't beat Ryanair with cheap flights, but there's a strategy to it. I've given all my secrets away about budget travel here: eepurl.com/imhRF-/

    Hi Daniel, thank you for this great video explaining everything. It will be very useful, as I’m hoping to travel mostly by train and bus on my next trip around Europe. Quick question about train travel- is it necessary to carry a strap and lock so you can attach and lock your luggage to the spot where you leave it. My luggage would be too big to go overhead, so I would have to put it in the luggage rack which won’t be right next to my seat! What happens when you want to go for a wander or you want to go to the dining car etc? What is security on trains like in your opinion please? Cheers from Marg in Australia!

  • @DTVDanielTelevision

    @DTVDanielTelevision

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello Marg and Hello Australia! In my opinion, it's not necessary to carry a strap and lock for your luggage. Even if you're not sitting right next to your luggage (which happens to me all the time), Europe is pretty safe on the trains. I just got back from Paris with 7 family members and about 14+ pieces of luggage. There were many times where we couldn't all be next to our luggage and everything was fine, no one touched our stuff. Now, if you can, definitely try to sit next to your luggage, but if you can't, keep an eye on it as you're riding. I totally forgot to film the luggage racks, but there's space for big suitcases. Oh... I also forgot to mention, if you have heavy luggage and need to hurry to a connection, get out of your seat at least 5-10 mins BEFORE the train stops! You need to make sure you're the FIRST one out of there so you can catch your connection! Bottom line: As long as your luggage is out of the aisles, no one will pay attention to it, so you don't have to worry :)

    @@DTVDanielTelevision Hi again Daniel, Thank you so much for your very helpful advice. I guess because I travel solo I am more conscious of trying to reduce my risks re things being stolen etc, as I am on my own, so can’t ask a buddy to watch this or that while I go to the bathroom!! I know that if I had a choice, I’d like to be able to roam around a bit and take photos of awesome scenery or other points of interest, but if I was worried about my bags “walking” then maybe I wouldn’t feel relaxed enough to enjoy doing that! I certainly agree that getting first to the door is a huge plus, especially on trains that have that annoying step down before you get off the train. It’s a pain if you have 2 bags and you are also aware that you don’t want to hold anyone up, but it takes a minute to get your stuff off the train safely. Have you found issues with strangers hassling passengers getting on and off the train? I had that problem getting from Brussels to Bruges- I was happily heading for my train to get on when I was almost surrounded by 3 or 4 people offering to carry my bags on and show me my seat. I managed to politely by firmly decline their “help” but then when I got off in Bruges, a guy virtually grabbed my bags and headed off up the platform, saying he would take me to the taxi rank. I kept telling him I was okay and trying to stop him, but he would not hand over my suitcase. When we got to the top of the ramp, I took it from him and headed to the taxi, but then he got angry because I didn’t pay him. Luckily there were lots of people around so I didn’t feel unsafe, but it was not pleasant. Even on the train I found people constantly trying to sell you magazines or trinkets or food. It really made for an uneasy trip. Regarding the food you discussed in your video, what is the quality like in your experience? I’ve only eaten in a few train stations, not on the trains, and so only have that to go on. Certainly wasn’t in raptures over the train station food experience. Safe travels and thanks again for the fantastic train advice! Cheers from over here!!

    Hi Daniel, Julia from Australia here. You mentioned in your video that if you missed you connecting train due to your train being late, that the agent would accept that and that you would be able to get onto the next available train using your existing ticket. Do you have to go to the ticket office to get that approved or does your app automatically update or how does that process work? Thanks in advance!

  • @DTVDanielTelevision

    @DTVDanielTelevision

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Julia from Australia 😋 Good question. The train employees (ones who scan your ticket on the train) will know about the missed connections so when you hand them your ticket they’ll understand that you already paid. Make sure you get on the next available train and only go to the ticket counter if there’s NOT another connection or if you want to modify your journey because of the missed connection. Every time I’ve missed a connection (due to the train being late), the app will automatically update to show the next available connection and the ticket agent on the next train is aware that my ticket is still valid. I hope that makes sense! Happy travels! 🚆

    Good question. Not the actual trains themselves, but the digital signs on the platform will mark the train ABCD. They also display numbers (1 or 2) so you know where 1st and 2nd class seats are located.

    The platform is marked A,B,C,etc and the sign shows how the train lines up with the platform.
