    There is actually far more news on TV now including prime time then there was back then. You could argue about the quality. There was shite TV on in the 70s as well, far more people tuned into game shows and soups check the numbers. Don't be so nostalgic about the past, it was as bad as this documentary makes clear.

    In fairness it's the fact that we had no "choice". Growing up in Ireland we had only 1 channel at this time. In the UK you would have had just 3. As children we watched political programmes like this, and I'm very grateful for that.

    For those of you who actually think that more government is good idea, I challenge you to do this. Within the week go to your local US Armed Forces Recruiting Office and enlist for 4 plus years. Once you sign that contract and swear in you'll be government property. Hence the word G.I. Which means Government Issue. You'll no longer have rights but privileges. You'll fall under the Uniform Code of Military Justice or UCMJ until your contract is completed. For those who scoff at my post remember this. In communist countries and majority of socialist countries military service is MANDATORY. Just ask the Russian male conscripts who feld Russia because they didn't want to fight in their government's war with Ukraine.

    I served in the US Army as a cook turning up in Bosnia's civil war for a year. It was a most challenging enduring endeavor and one that isn't worth it in the end for individuals to commit 100% unless war is no other option here on the home front. Yes, you could get in trouble with an Article 16, demoted, and sent to the brig with dishonorable discharge is a bad unruly soldier in defiance of the chain of command and US Government. I did see several bad soldiers go out bad and had 2 bad soldiers as battle buddies who supposed to be helping me instead of raping civilians and being mean and hateful. I thought for a few months I was going to have to shoot two fellow Americans, but they got in trouble, sat in the tent waiting discharge, and dishonorably discharged back to Alabama and Mississippi. I didn't even have to report some problems during deployment to the chain of command for they saw and heard it discreetly handling it. There are only a handful of recruits today going active duty. I wouldn't do it again for that's a lot of hard work that hurt me effecting and ruining my life. I've met hundreds of dis-empowered under employed and even homeless veterans of foreign wars that all feel it was a bad misstep as in terrible mistake. Don't do it unless war on the home front is the only option.

    @Jo Piscine well (disregarding your rather broad and unsubstantiated generalisation), the term 'witch-hunt' does not literally mean 'hunting for practitioners of witchcraft'. its an idiomatic expression, meaning a zealous or dogmatic campaign against a particular group

  • @fgaze72

    @fgaze72

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Jo Piscine Did you really show that it was not racist? You just said 'African [sic] themselves to this day are very proud of their beliefs in witchcraft'. That's not showing anything. That is just stating something without any evidence. Even if it were substantiated, it doesnt negate the racism of his response - the phrase 'witch-hunt' originates from the medieval prosecution of 'witches' in western Europe. 'witch-hunts' (in the original meaning) wouldn't even *occur* in a society where witchcraft was practiced and believed in (because witches wouldn't be considered a bad thing). the instant association of 'witch-hunt' with 'African tribes' is the sign of a diseased racist mind. And your defence of him (along with your wild unsubstantiated generalisation) says a lot about you too

  • @fgaze72

    @Jo Piscine as far as I can see, the rise in witchcraft accusations in Africa seems to be due to christian preachers. and no, im not drunk, why do you keep trying to insult me? i understand the notion of implication, I'm just saying that OP didn't actually really imply she was talking about racism, there's loads of other things wrong with his response; it's ignoring the pragmatics of the interviewers use of 'witch-hunt' as a non-literal term, which is just bad discourse, for a start

  • @fgaze72

But like most radicalized young people in stable, democratic countries, they were really at war with their parents values. I went through something similar in my 20s. You grow out of it, and hopefully before you do something horrible.

By the way, the US isn’t fascist or imperialist you wanker. Why do you think fake news sites like CNN can get away with criticising Trump 24/7. As for imperialist, the only countries that you can claim are imperialist in 2019 is China (invading Tibet in 1950 and the Paracel and Spratly Islands in the South China Sea), Russia (invading Georgia in 2008, Crimea and Ukraine in 2014), Indonesia (invading West Papau in 1962), Turkey (invading northern Cypriot in 1974) and Morocco (invading the West Sahara in 1970).
