German Tactics For 1918 Spring Offensive I THE GREAT WAR Special
The German Spring Offensive in 1918, the so called Kaiserschlacht or Operation Michael, was the biggest German offensive of World War 1 and Quartermaster Erich Ludendorff prepared his troops for this battle by incorporating everything the German Army had learned in this war until now. Hutier Infiltration Tactics, Georg Bruchmüller's artillery targeting and more lessons from the Eastern Front mean the Entente was facing a different Army than before.

Germany: "I lost 10,000 men in a suicidal over the top trench raid." "Yeah... you're fired." Britain: "I lost 10,000 men in a suicidal over the top trench raid." "Better luck tomorrow Haigs."

I dispute that
Step 1: Have every single artillery gun fire and launch every plane. Step 2: Banzai rush the enemy trenches! Step 3: Get the supply lines forward. Step 4: Repeat. Unfortunately, step 3 was the failure.
"Many traditional tactics no longer work." But what about *the great cavalry charge* that will end the war?

The elite Sturmtruppen were deadly when they could take their enemies by surprise, but they were in real danger when the enemy could prepare for them. Sometimes they would retreat and rig their positions with explosives or anticipate their direction of attack. As stated in the video, they relied on a weakened enemy line to break through. If that line wasn't weak, then it was like trying to crack a tank with a dagger.

Brilliant show today. Perfect mix of detail and visual stimulation. Indy was very entertaining.
GREAT STAFF, Guys! Indy, thanks for bringing this up. Markus, thanks for your meticulous, truly German, research.
One of the best episodes yet and could be the template for the Great War crew's next series of programs - deep analysis of historic battles with emphasis on getting inside the heads of the planners at staff HQ, field HQ and down to the platoon or small unit level as well as comprehensive analysis of unit tactics, armament and lessons learned The MG08/15 shown appears to have a belt fed drum magazine attached, the sustained fire advantages of which apparently were lost until the mid 80's and are now pretty much standard with 100 and 200 round drums/pouches in use in modern infantry units.
Brilliant episode! Give Marcus a raise.
Thank you for this special. Just recently I was hoping for an in-depth video about Hutier-tactics.
Holy shit, fascinating stuff as always. Can’t wait to see what you guys have in stock for your next series
Howdy Indy and crew! I have a question for OOTT; Can you tell us anything about anti-aircraft gunnery in the Great War? My great-grandfather was an American anti-aircraft gunner in that war, and family lore tells of his adventures walking across northern France in hobnail boots, as well as training to be a gunner by going dove hunting. Thanks!
I like history
Thanks Marcus for a very thought out episode. These tactics used earlier in the war could have been even more deadly for the allies
@bobybot9320

maybe they needed the years of trench warfare to develop it, negating any chance of having it earlier
Great video and, Thanks Marcus!
I can’t get over how amazing this show is
fascinating! Thought not directly parallel, the description of earlier German strategies reminded me of Gen. Halleck in the US Civil War, with Halleck seeing the occupation of territory as the primary goal (and by breaking an army into smaller occupying units dissipating his strength)
This channel helps get me through the day

"The artillery knows neither friend nor foe, only tempting targets" Cited from the Offiziersschule Hannover.
FINALLY at the Spring Offensive! man, it's been a long war! (probably nowt like ACTUALLY being on the W.F). I've learnt loads on the way, but this is by far my favourite part of the conflict; as both sides came closest to scoring a final victory before the 11/11 armistice. Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with :)
I love learning about real war tactics, strategies, and logistics.
You can feel the anticipation building! The critical hour is almost upon us!
There is WWII video in your footage. Pure class!
You don`t need to completely destroy your enemy, crippling and weakening your foe can be just as effective. It really does amaze me on how many World War One era tactics and strategies are still so relevant on a modern battlefield.
nice episode, thx
Thank you Marcus!

Just recently discovered this channel, which is a shame because the war is almost over already. Actually, I guess that's a good thing... ? Anyway, props to whoever had the idea to do this show. It's really quite a clever concept. Something about being updated on the week by week events of a war as they unfolded 100 years ago, as if it were happening today, helps me to grasp the gravity of what was taking place with greater ease than a documentary, or book might. You can almost imagine being a civilian of that era, reading this information from a newspaper. It's really quite interesting. Great channel, and a great execution of the concept by everyone involved.

Michael Victor
Great video. Been a fan since 2014. Do you know if there are any manuals that contain the "how's" and "what to do's" of WW1 German tactics?
Hopefully next payday I'll contribute by patreon. Pretty timely for the offensive, tho. Well, let's see the Reichmark/Peso exchange rate... aha!, one more moustache brush for Von Mackensen!
Close air support! An opportunity missed at Verdun at its single road supply line.
There would be 3 sectors, the sides are covered by artillery and machine guns, the middle would be a charge of automatic weapons and grenade equipped foot soldiers, drunk and high, screaming bloody murder, and emptying magazines as they ran. Anything to keep the enemies heads down. Then, they would stack up, throw grenades into the trench all at once, and as soon as they detonated, the Hutier Soldiers would hop the trench and mow down anything that was left alive. As soon as the front line was clear, they would retreat, and artillery would concentrate on the rear trenches, killing any retreaters and reinforcements. They had people that would come with just just carry extra grenades and reload magazines. It was absolutely brutal. The Totenkpofs would move all around the front depending on where they were needed. Fallshcirmjaeger and Panzergrenadier tactics are about the same, just with tanks and planes instead of trench warfare. These tactics will never go out of style.
What about the state of preparation of the Entente side ? What was their total number of troops, reserves, artillery, planes, tanks, etc... ? What was their defensive dispositions, strategies and their plans for future operations ? What was the state of their Industry, supplies, logistic and moral ?

Thank you for the quick reply =) And sorry for the shape of my comment. It was simply questions out of my head since we now have a good understanding of the situation from Germany point of view but from the Entente one, we just know there was lots of shenanigans going in the British line of command. It was solely pure curiosity from my part. I admit that a neutral comment on youtube can't always precisely deliver the tone and thinking of a person and i apologize if you ever got a wrong impression because it was not my intention. Gday Indy and team not sure if my question fits in with out of the trenches or who did what but who was Albert jacka and what did he do to get himself such high honours within The Australian army?. Ps I think Indy deserves a raise!! for his awesome work keep up the awesome show team
Hey guys great job your doing love the show. I only joined the show last year and because of that I'm quite outdated (I'm still in 1915 actually). So here I have a few questions for out of the trenches regarding Gallipoli: 1. Where were the Entente Bases for the high command, at the front or on some Islands? 2. I know that Churchill wanted to force the Dardanelles through naval might, but the plan failed and 1 out of 4 French and 2 out of 14 British ships sunk, in addition 1 British vessel was damaged, later repared on Malta but never replaced, and in the same Week Italy declared War, the German U-21 sank 2 British vessels. Where these losses ever replaced, or just how strong was the Entente Fleet left after the failed landings. 3. How strong was the fleet of Destroyers, Subs, Cruisers and other smaller vessels at Gallipoli It would be cool if you could answer all these questions ,because I'm theorizing a Scenario in which Italy declared War on France June 19th 1915, and I need that Information

@wuugaa6776
6 жыл бұрын
It massively impacted the fighting men, the huge movement of people, as well as the supression of information certainly played a big role in its spread. Young people were especially ravaged by the disease, and it happily spread in the crowded hospitals and filthy trenches. It was even harder on the German soldiers, since they were often malnourished. Over all it killed at least 50 million people, so about three to four times the dead of the whole war
@adlikfasadlikfas9531
6 жыл бұрын
Wuugaa Well thank you for your answer. Now Indy has no need to bother with me :DDD
Correct me if I'm way out there, but this kind of sounds like the early Roman Maniple style of tactics. fast, flexible, experienced flanking units that had a more generalist role while a main force clashes with the enemy.
Question for out of the trenches. How were the POWs treated by enemies during capture?
Do you realize how much your educating the public about ww1,I ask some coworkers under 30 A few history questions about us history,simple things like who we fought in the civil war,ww1,ww2..almost all didn't know...thank you.
Hi Indy and the gang, Please dedicate a whole special episode to reading letters/diaries written by lower-ranking soldiers. These are the people whose lives are wasted (goes for both KIAs and survivors). Unlike generals and politicians who were sending men and women to their deaths while being protected in their castles and mansions.
this channel is the bees knees!!!!!!
For a out of the trenches video why didn’t the Germans use the French mutinies in 1917 to their advantage it seems striking a good attack on the French during a mutiny would sure bring them to their knees

From what I understand the Germans mostly didn’t know about it and what little they did know gave them the impression it was localized small troops making a fuss.
I'm curious. Can you guys do a special, or a question about Korea in WW1? Emperor Gojong was a friend of Kaiser Wilhelm II. And his wife advocated closer relations to the Russian Empire prior to her assassination in 1895. Some even fought for Russia in WW1. Please answer something for Korea in WW1. Thank you and keep up the good work. You guys inspired me for map animation for my career. Good job! 🙂
Well German barrage in morning of 21 March was just exist 5 hours but that barrage was largest artillery bombardment of the war by the used numbers of artillery and mortars which were approx 6600 guns and 3500 mortars.
Hello Indy and Crew! I have one question. What will you do when you run out of thing's to cover on the Great War? Will you do about the inter-war period or will you do World War 2?
As your coverage of The Great War draws to a close (spoiler in November this year) what are your team's plan for the future? are we going to see something totally new from you or another week by week coverage of a different modern war? (Either I'm confident would be amazing). Would we have to wait until 100 years after the beginning of WW2 for your coverage of those events?
Thank For telling me these tactics Indy, now I can attack The trenches up ahead! Update: We were tore apart by machine gun and artillery fire. Our assault failed.
they might have lost but you can't call them stupid
In the still photo @3:02, the Germans are using a couple of captured Lewis guns. Just caught my eye.
3:02.... are those German troops using a pair of Lewis guns? They've certainly got a fair bit of kit with them (boxes of spare drums etc).
THIS IS MORE ENTERTAINING THAN 2023
So i've been gathering some information about the Attack of the Dead during WW1 and i've heard a rumor about there being one man who had to survive by canablism until the fortress was opened up sometime in the 1920's if i got anything wrong in this question please feel free to correct me. Ps love the show! And give everyone a Raise!!!!

@varana
6 жыл бұрын
The existence of conscription does not mean there can't be volunteers. You can mobilise only a part of your total manpower at once; among those not drafted initially, there may very well be volunteers. Or people who were too young, too old, or discharged for health reasons when the war broke out. Sorry I can't contribute to the actual question, but it _is_ a legitimate question.
So, Bbruchmüller pioneered the modern artillery tactics, where battlefield isolation and command chain disruption are the two primary targets of the artillery fire.
The guy who plays Ivar the Boneless in Vikings, 2nd from left at 3:43 ?
How much time do you take to prepare for out of the trenches? I can't imagine you could do it off the cuff.
OOT question: Could you explain financial side of war a bit? Who were biggest money providers for both sides? Is it true that Germany would have to pay reparations till 1988 if not WW2? Thanks for great content and I hope to see you soon in new project.

The Germans finished paying reparations in 2010. That's 92 years after the end of the first world war.
So when are we going to see a special on Sir John Monash and his combined arms?
