German Special Forces in Afghanistan | May 2013

In May 2013, German Special Forces, from the K.S.K., were rushed forward from their Forward Operating Base, F.O.B. Kilagai, in Northern Afghanistan to assist a group of Afghan Policemen who had been ambushed whilst on a routine patrol.
This video is dedicated to the memory of Hauptfeldwebel Daniel Wirth.

Hi all, As I mentioned in my latest Community post I will be re-publishing a handful of videos over the next few weeks, which I originally removed last year as I was not happy with the quality of them. However, there has been such a high demand to have them back on the Channel that I have decided to reinstate them; this video being one of them. Thank you all for your continued support on the Channel, LfE

May I just add a suggestion? At the beginning of this video, your speech rate was way higher than the rest of the video. As a native English speaker, I have no issues with it, but I know it can be challenging for non-native speakers. The slower cadence also gives the video a more professional feel. Other than that, keep it up. And I am begging for more videos involving GIGN if you have more.

I was three times in AFG, two times with my "Kompanie", and one time under an English Team. It was from 2003-2005 and i will never forget these times. Working with Americans, getting Maintained Cars and supply from the Italians and we had to do the HQ and Camps around Computer/Telephone maintenance. So possibly every Soldier can talk to his Family at Home. It was for me a great Honor to work with so many Soldiers from different Lands as good as efficient it can be. Eating Lobster with American, getting Drunk with Romanien Special Forces and nearly every other Nation from time to time.

The KSK were there through 2004 and I know this because as I served in US Army Special Forces and was in Afghanistan from late 2002-2004 and we worked with them everyday. We ever went to the range together all the time. After returning home from Afghanistan I re-enlisted to go to Germany and I wound up moving in next door to the KSK Sgt Major that I had worked with in Afghanistan. i had an instructor in basic training that was attached to that unit when this happened. he told us that the air support elements couldnt make an impact observation, due to the forest coverage, which is usually required. and that the taliban fighters hid under plastic sheets in their dugouts. Thats why that patrol was sent in at all. As you already stated everyone was really mad at the cowardly behavior of the afghan police, if it wasnt planned in the first place. This was a very tragic day for the ksk and will live in the memories of alot of comrades.

I stumbled over this video today. And what you just said brought back some memories. I never served but it must have been around the time this incident occured and I was speaking to a friend of mine about this (he was an active soldier with the panzergrenadiere, I think he was a Feldwebel(Sgt.) at that time.) And he exactly told me the same story. Espescially the fact with the plastic blankets that made it impossible or at least hard for the air reconnaissance to detect the fighters in the woods and thats why they send in the patrol and thats what the KSK operator got killed. The funny thing is, I thought this was some BS just some soldier that brags about his knowledge, until I read your comment. Because he said exactly the same thing. Unfortunatley Im not in touch with him anymore he moved to spain and became a doctor and I think he married an american woman and lives in the US now. But it hit me hard to read that and I instantly thought about this conversation. So in summary I think your instructor knew and was right.

If it's not too much to ask, I'd like to request a video on Operation Artemis, which was a French-led EU intervention during The Second Congo War in 2003. In particular, the missions of Särskilda Skyddsgruppen (SSG) and Fallskärmsjägarskolans Instatskompani (FJS IK), which made up the Swedish special forces at the time (both units were merged in 2011, creating Särskilda Operationsgruppen, SOG). Around 70-80 operators were deployed in north eastern Congo during Artemis, where they saw the heaviest fighting Swedish troops had seen since The Congo Crisis between 1961-1964. Additonally, they conducted raids, special reconnissance and general counter-insurgency in the region, playing a key role in deintenseifing the conflict. Artemis is one of the only publicly known missions cunducted by the Swedish special forces, and the only one with any substancial detail about what exactly they did, as while other operations in Afghanistan, The Balkans, Liberia, Chad, The Central African Repbublic, Lebanon, Iraq and the Sahel region are known, the detail usualy ends at "They were/are in the country". Cheers to you guys and thanks to our allies abroad (: if someone wants to have a deeper look into the capabilities of the KSK, they only recently started to show snippets of how they operate on the official Bundeswehr channel. If you're interested in hostage rescue operations I can recommend two episodes: Wo sind die Geiseln? / KSK / Folge 21 (translated: Where are the hostages?) and the following episode 22. Germany has really repaid its debt in my opinion military wise. Love to see those changes in history. Once sworn enemies and now brothers fighting for the same cause.

Given the lack of courage and professionalism of the Afghan police and military, it's no wonder that the Taliban are back in control. It makes me both sad and angry to think of all those who were killed and wounded (in vain) trying to help the country become a safer and more secure place. R.I.P Daniel.

What i find remarkable about the KSK, other than their immense professionalism and proficiency, is how little is known about their work to the public. It is an open secret that the Force has had quite a lot of missions and engagements, but even in the political realm, not much is known. The Parliament only has to be informed about their missions every three months, the Chancellor isn’t the Commander in Chief, the Press gets information, but only through channels that make it impossible to publicize it. All of this makes sense for Special Forces, but in a way, its sad. The only time, the population as a whole gets to know anything about the KSK is through Nazi-Scandels. Those scandals are real, and not out of proportion, but the resulting discussions were ridiculous in parts. Some (opposition) politicians said that a Force like the KSK is no longer needed for Germany. That of course is absolute nonsense, but still…
