Dogs saw hungry guys with pointed sticks hunting dinosaurs & said “they ain’t gonna make it” so dogs joined up to teach how to hunt. And now people are advanced to the point where we have respect from dogs because we come back from Costco with roast chickens, beef & dried liver treats. Our dogs smell it & think we are amazing hunters.

I trained my rottie with an ecollar. He almost never needed the actual stimulation. It had a beep, a stimulation (set at a certain number), and a stimulation (the 'set' number + 2). I used the beep 99% of the time. It allowed him to have so much more freedom. He was rarely ever on a leash because he was mostly trustworthy anyway, but I knew I had to collar to get his attention if someone started dribbling a ball or something (one of the temptations he had a hard time resisting lol).

I've had my GSD pup since he was 8 weeks old. He's now 6 months old, and he's a lot to deal with. I found myself asking myself the question "did i bite off more than i could chew with this pup?" In the first 3 weeks of having him. I'm so grateful i decided to go through that stage because he's definitely taking me on adventures every single day. Everything about his training is going great from protection training to obedience and Search and rescue training. He's really picking up everything fast, and i can see the pure joy in his face everytime. We do however have one problem, and that is that every single time we're out walking and a car is driving past us, he makes every sound a dog can make while he pulls towards the car and stands up in his collar trying to break free and chase the car. It's really bad to the point were bystanders look in horror as they think he's either scared or simply just aggressive, which he's in fact not. He loves everything and everybody. Even guests coming over gets an excited greeting with lots of kisses and affection. He's also very dog friendly, and barks in excitement at other dogs as he wants nothing more than to play with them. Did Enzo and Lotus ever have any problem with car chasing, and if so what did you do to stop it? Disclaimer: Once he even senses a car coming, we can't do anything to distract him. I can hold his favorite toy or treat and he just won't care. It's almost like i become invisible to him, and the car incoming is the center of attention. Greetings from Denmark.

@@ThatEnzoandLotus I sure hope so. It's almost to the point were i can't control him anymore. Incredibly dangerous in the long run. I often sit by a busy road, and let him bark himself tired. It usually works, but the very next day it's the same thing all over again. His barking is very high pitched, so i know it's not aggression. I hope it gets better with age, and this is just a phase.

30:50 Lost our 10.5 year old rottie in July, def take those words to heart. He seemed like he was in great shape, other than a tad overweight and starting to get grey on his muzzle. He started not doing as well on walks and we didn't really know what was going on. Thought maybe it was just old age, but he was in such great overall health I would have assumed we had another couple years with him at least. He had just been to the vet a few months before and everything was "fine". Then one day, I had come home on lunch and my wife said he had just been laying around and not acting normal. He didn't eat his food (literally the only time his entire life he didn't finish whatever was in his bowl), had been really lethargic all day, etc. I went back to work, and like 30 min later she called me and said he was drooling alot and falling over and I needed to come home. We called the vet and rushed him there. We had to carry him to our car. He was barely with us still when we got there, so they took him in (we had to stay in the car bc covid crap). They called us and said he had a mass of cancer in his stomach and they couldn't do anything for him. That they'd recommend putting him down. We asked if we could come in when they did it and they said yes. Then 10 seconds later she got back on the phone and said he had already passed on his own. Bad enough it was so fast, but not even being able to be in there made it worse. It was heartbreaking. I knew he'd be gone someday, and I always made sure to show him lots of love, etc so I don't have regrets there but I do know I could have been a better owner with several things. So yes, while somber and not pleasant to think about... take the time to recognize that they won't be with us forever, and to love them, train them, and just talk to them while you can. My great grandma (who also had rotties and GSDs) always said "that's the bad thing about the big dogs, we don't get to keep them as long". And she wasn't wrong. Ramses technically beat the "average" of 8-10 years, but I thought for sure we'd get 12-13. It still feels like it was cut too short and that we should have had him longer.

So sorry for your lost💔🙏 what happened to your PuP, sounds exactly what happened to my Boxer, this pass Sept, 2 wks before he was fine, Then 1 day he just didn't want to finish his food, then exactly what you described, I was on the way to rushing him to the Vet, he passed away in the back seat of my car 20 mins from the Vet, My PuP Sonny boy was 11 1/2 yrs old. I am devastated, he was with me all the time.. 😥💔😥💔

My Sonny Boy was a Large breed Boxer, he was about 105lbs, a big boy 💙 I thought maybe it was bloat, large dogs can get. I felt around his stomach, he didn't cry out, So when passed I had no idea what was wrong / or happen, I also took very good care of him. Like you you there's some things I could of done better, Then I came across your comment, & it hit me like a ton of bricks!! Boxers are prone to cancer. Your great grandma is so right, I've always had large breed dog's, but the time we get with is too short!! 😥😥💙💙🌈

Hey, Will, Enzo, and Lotus (and Mom)! Thanks for having Robert on. He is a force multiplier! Great to see you guys interchanging ideas and training tips. That “last day” statement still hurts, but, I think, that is what makes us worthy of our animals: full commitment knowing how short our time together is. Being “present” with your dog when you have the time to give, goes so far. You both exemplify that philosophy in your videos, so it’s good to hear you both bounce ideas around a little to generate some clarity.

I have a beautiful GSD his 2 years old, and his a smart boy, I trained him to do a lot of stuff from heal to down to stay, he can do all the basics commands. The only thing I struggled with is off-leash because as soon as he sees other dogs he wants to run and play ( not aggressive ) but it bothers me. So I decided to purchase a mini E-collar ET-300. And now his almost perfect and I'm so happy. We started to enjoy our off-leash walk. ( keep in mind I used vibration mode only) because my dog is sensitive to it.

Thanks for this video. I'm a member on Robert Cabral's site. My GSD is my first dog. He was dog reactive and vigilant with people and he's forced me into dog training, competitive obedience (for mental stimulation, not to compete). He's made me a better handler than I anticipated I needed to be. Now looking back, I'm grateful he forced me down this journey. Can you say more about your comment regarding Enzo vs. Lotus and not being able to go anywhere with Lotus like you're able to with Enzo? Did you get Lotus as a pup? I got my boy at 5 months and learned of his reactivity.

This has been one of if not the best videos I've seen on KZread. Personally love Robert's work and all he's done especially for helping shelter dogs to improve their chances of getting adopted. Always remember people, when you decide to bring any animal into your life, keep it simple, and understand that it's an animal and that attributing human emotions and reactions to animal behaviors solves very little if anything at all. The animal is doing what is natural to it for its species, and it has to learn from you what you expect from it before it can give you what you want. Abusive and high stress environments are generally not conducive to learning, unless your goal is to get the animal to fear/loathe/distrust/hate you. But to a lesser degree sometimes some types of low level stress can be used to teach acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. A pop on the leash, a firm stern "no", an ecollar stimulus, even a type of touch, all can be used as corrections, depending on what you are most comfortable you using and what more importantly what you teach your dog that type of engagement means and his association of a specific degree of negativity or positivity with that particular type of engagement. Robert, keep up the great work.

Indeed an E collar can be used in the most gentle and passive way. I must say if you look around at a great majority of dog owners many have little or no control over their dogs and it is very apparent in any sort of social settings or gathering of people or whenever other dogs are around .

I Bought him at 2 months and in 2 weeks of him being with my family he was already protective of us against other dogs and other people. He is 6 months now I can't take him everywhere because he is aggressive towards other people when not properly introduced but I like that because I do love the fact he protects my property and family against other dogs or people. So what let the dog be its her character its her way of greeting way of communication because they don't have the language of human . but if you really don't like it then it takes about a week ( or so ) doing it for that prevention purpose you are wanting. you and visitors (visitors = the training props) together you make the visitors knock come in and just stand there blanking them till they stop , if the dogs jumping just blank or a 1 single command like "down" and about 5 mins later come in the living room the visitor sits down and then a small greeting to the dog and carry on with what they're doing like talking to you . at the same time the dog jumps up the visitors go out till the dog goes away then again repeat . both techniques mixed and just repetition , just constant repetition repetition over an over and it eventually sinks in and they get the message that THAT isn't what you do when greeting or when people come in and visit that THAT isn't what to do just jump up. I learned that from ceaser milan. If it keeps jumping up they go outside wait a few mins knock again and repeat repeat. Its not instant but depending on the individual dog the timescale of it will vary . but day to day its just the same process repetition patience and time. 9/10 its the humans impatience boredom lack of will that will fail. Ceaser Milan and Victoria stillwell . Professional training specialists

He really tries his very best to be the best dog he can to serve me for the rest of his life. I may not be the best owner the world could offer him, but I'm willing to do my best. He's my very best friend & I take him to work with me everyday , I give him treats & mix his wet food with dry food to ease his belly a bit. If you guys have any advice on how I can keep his joints healthy & whatever else i can do to keep him as happy & content as possible, I'd be more than greatful & willing to learn.

What makes a GSD turn against their owners? I had a GSD and was told I had to give up my 2 yr old GSD I had as a pup. We found out that 6 of the same litter turned against their owners so my dad didn't want me to experience that. I was only 10 and I trained, fed, played, walked and loved my 2yr old 120 lb dog. I cried for a long time. .

It was a long time ago but I remember I loved my dog and took good care of him and he was well trained, I never used a prong collar. He obeyed me at ten-12 yrs and I was barely 98lbs. He obeyed me, never pulled me. I don't know if it was true, but that was the reason my father gave me why he was put down.

There are medical and genetic issues that can make a dog have seizures (and hurt others because they don't know what they're doing in the seizure). Poor breeding practices make it more likely dogs will do this. It's very sad.

I've been watching Robert's videos and he really is quite patient. It seems like the owners don't get it sometimes and then it's frustrating while you're yelling at the dog owner. The dog follows directions well, but not the owner. Keep the interviews coming. Robert does pop the dogs, short and quick, as a corrective measure though which isn't strangling them.

Today is October 31, 2020.... I have two 7 month old German Shepherds, Ruger and Talon (brothers) they weighed 80 lbs at 6 months. They have learned to stay, come and down verbal and sign.... I hide treats for them to find them, they love it. They have even found a neighbor child we hid so they could find him. They don't over bark much. They have been on Gentle Leader lead control and now on Prong collars for control.... But it doesn't matter using these collars..... I am thankful only one of my Shepherds is an “adrenaline junkie”.... While on a regular walk Ruger is calm and will heel pretty well.... but if we see another dog, cat and sometimes a human he is jumping a foot or more with all four paws in the air. It's up and down, up and down and snips at my hand or shirt and tears my clothes when he realizes I am not letting him go play or meet the other dog. They get plenty of play at dog parks to learn how to act around other dogs. We built them a play area with ramps and a tunnel in our backyard and a dog door to go in and out as they please. They also have a sand pit to play in. They love it all. But I believe Ruger thinks every time out it should be a dog park adventure. We walk several times a week and only go the park once a week but he wants it to be everyday I think. I am in my sixties and understand the alpha role.... but this dog is exhausting... I hope he out grows some of this!!!!

Hi Nesha or Will, what coloured German Shepherd do you recommend getting. Bc some people say that the white is the best tempered but I rlly like the Czech one like Enzo, or does it not matter. Love y’all vids!

From what I know, whites were bred with the softest temper. Czech line is good, working lines are a must, they were strictly bred back in soviet times, their backs are straight unlike American showlines, less health issues. It all depends how you raise them too. I have 2 gsd girls, they turn 1yo tomorrow. Sweetest pups but one can have a very strong temper, exactly like their dad, the other pup sweet as it can be, just like their mom. Both are awesome, intelligent, beautiful, soft and very protective. As for color, I have seen all-black and sables can be the more strong-willed of all, but like I said, it is how you raise them, but be sure to pick a pup that matches your personality, if you are a strong leader/alpha type, getting a more dominant dog will match your personality, etc. Out of 8 puppies in the litter, I picked out, err they picked me, but they were the 2 smallest after the runt, so they match my personality, playful, shy but energetic. Good luck! I've noticed getting a dog in 2020 can be tough! Demand is at all time high due to more people being home.

The dogs color does not have anything to do with temperament. Temperament comes from the genetics of the dog. Also I'm not sure if Enzo is from Czech lines. I think he is American lines, his color is sable. If you want a sweet tempered dog, look into show lines. Just make sure they have tested for health issues. Work lines can be a lot to handle. I have owed gsds for many years.

Color doesn't necessarily mean anything. My black german shepherd is from two sable parents. Now... Working line vs. show line will definitely have different behaviors. And, most or maybe all black german shepherds are from working line, so, interpret that how you see fit. I *think* Robert Cabral has commented before that he's not a fan of white german shepherds, because they can tend to be nervous. I may be mixing things up.

The ones who usually don't agree with ecollars are the same people who substantially limit their dogs freedom. If given the choice between a run and leash living or no leash I would choose the collar. Like you, come is always just a vibrate. The only cue that sometimes needs a little more is leave it. If this tells you anything. My dog has never yelped with the ecollar. But when she touched the horse fence.. she yelped and I have been zapped and its not horrible but its not the same sensation you get with ecollar. And you know what half the time she doesn't even wear it because she knows. We see the same in the horse world. People thinking that you get everything done with positive reinforcement only. You'll only get a 50% success rate, if that, because your missing the consequence.

I’ve owned many dogs. My German Shepard is easier to train and handle compared to my Foo Foo poodle. Saying that people shouldn’t own a GSD if they haven’t owned a dog, is like saying don’t have children if you’re a first time parent. There are plenty of sources of dog training information these days.

GSDs don't trust other things right away but after a while they get used to it and identify what it's not dangerous and what is. Mine is a family dog but his parents are used for security work his father is a no nonsense dog.

It takes quite of bit of work every day with them. Unless you have the knowledge and experience to handle it, I would not suggest it.

I’ve had GSD’s for over 30 years. Yes the breed are highly sensitive to food allergies. Particularly grain and wheat intolerance. What do you both feed your dogs? Both my 11 year old Shollie (GSD x Boarder Collie) and my 13 week old long haired GSD pup are raw fed. I have no issues with excessive licking or scratching from either dog. In fact I have no health or behavioural issues with them at all. Shollie’s are prone to shedding as much as GSD are. But on a raw diet I only get excessive shedding with the seasonal changing of coats. You see the difference in their coats, eyes, teeth, mobility and behaviour when they’re raw fed. I made the switch years ago after my dearly departed Westie developed a terrible skin condition. The vet tried everything for over a year but nothing worked. A friend suggested switching her to raw and out of desperation I did. It took just 4 days to clear up completely and never came back. I’ve never looked back. I can’t recommend a biologically appropriate raw diet enough.

@@amandastander894 steroids are a short term fix and have longer lasting effects than people realise. I’m no vet but I am a qualified nurse. I’d always recommend trying natural remedies first and using medication as a last resort. If raw feeding is not something you want to do, try a grain free food and add supplements such as salmon or hemp oil and a powdered collagen to the food. All are safe for pups of any age.

Would definitely suggest a vet for this type of situation. Typically itching without fleas is some sort of allergy. You need to figure out what it is so you can remove from the diet. Being itchy all the time is very uncomfortable for the pup.
