Two legends on one stage, a 12 minutes performance and a unique atmosphere throughout the whole experience. Straightforward on this video I was most stunned by Sohrab Pournazeri who played Tanboor. Lyrically the song was very sad, about a lover giving everything he had for his beloved person. Homayoun Shajarian delivered the message with his intonation really well and melodramatic to the listener. Their skills are super amazing and I'm happy I shot a reaction on this masterpiece.

Persian Sufi poetry always has a double meaning, which depends on the interpretation of the reader. It can be an earthly love or divine love. For example, "O' Beloved take my hand" Beloved can be a human or God, also if you read "I tore the veil", it means I put aside everything that distracts me to see the divine light or pure love. I hope that helps you understand the meaning. Also "Mercy" was a typo by the uploader, it is "as Mercury (the planet) follows (orbiting around) Sun", the beloved is the Sun and the lover is Mercury. Another example in Persian poetry is the relationship between butterfly and candle. The butterfly warms itself around the candle heat (love), but burns (from love) when it gets closer: "All of us are in reality like three butterflies We're the fable , in the lover's oasis, The first came near the candle, and said : ' I've discovered the meaning of love ' The second fluttered its wing near the flame, and said : ' I've been burned by the fire of love ' The third threw itself into the fire, Yes ... Yes ... This is the meaning of love ..." "Poem of the Butterflies" by Attar (Persian poet)

I understand your confusion about the translation as any other reactor, well it's really hard to translate Persian poems to English especially if the poems are from poets-philosophers like Rumi or Hafez, but anyways here is better translation (or somehow interpretation) of the poem, i hope this helps you brother oh Come! From your love, I have lost my mind. If I were like a town(city) , I am a ruined one now. I let go of family and home for your love to dwell in the pain of loving you. I was so weak, that I am sad to describe, but when I saw you I became strong and masculine. As i saw my soul related to yours (your soul mingled and mixed with mine), for you, from my relatives I cut all my ties ( and became a stranger to them) Days and nights I was telling legends of other lovers Now in your love, I have become one. playing Tanbur I swear On those intoxicated with divine love (and got drunk from divine wine) that I am intoxicated with your love (oh my lord) Take my hand my beloved sweetheart soulmate (my lord). I swear On those who give up their life (for the love of God) that i am alive (and will give up mine too) I swear On those who have freed themselves (from arrogance and Presumptuous and sins) and got blissed that i have freed myself too. I had once been just a bookish and (blindly) was following books like Mercury after the Sun I was among literates (scholars) and was living with them Once I saw the forehead light of the cupbearer (cupbearer is Metaphor for a spiritual master), I became intoxicated and I broke all pens in my drunken frenzy . (the books and manuscripts can not describe the deep love for God ) playing Tanbur You told me to rip the veil, which I did . (veil= Metaphor for whatever prevents you from seeing divine light of God). You told me to break (shatter) the cup, which I did. (it means the divine wine - love of God- is more important than the cup itself like the soul is more important than the body ) You told me to cut ties of all my companions and friends (and let go of them all). I detached my heart from all others and hold (attached) it onto you (my Lord)

The Lyric (poem) is from the famous Mystic, philosopher poet Molana-Jalal-Aldin-Balkhi known in the West as Rumi (he never used Rumi as his surname). It has multilayers and one cannot understand it just by the literal meaning of the words; depending on one's age and experience in life, the perception of these poems can be totally different. There are many of these mystics in Persian poetry that have enriched it through the centuries.

The Rumi is a struggle, prayer, conversation and plea of the soul with the creator. Word by word translation falls short to express these extremely spiritual moments. It is pure love, conflicts and soul searching wrapped up in one package. I wish I could describe it better, but how can you describe an ocean or a forest to someone who has never seen it before. Even as a Persian speaking person that I am, 2 people can have a complete different but at their own merit correct interpretation of the words. This is not about relatives, or any earthly symbols or persons. It is 100% spiritual. Even the wine and chalice that he is referring to it is a spiritual drunkenness and not actual one. Hope these explanations help you, when u are seeing the translation to look for spiritual meaning rather than an earthly symbols and analogy. Thx

Rumi was in love with Shams, a dervish that came into Rumi's life twice. There are many stories about what happened to Shams. But somehow he disappeared again from Rumi's life (or was murdered by Rumi's followers out of jealousy). The departure caused Rumi great pain. Some of his poems are inspired by his love for this mysterious man. And the pain is there. He wrote a whole book in his name called Divane Shams.

It was one of the unique reactions, thank you Regarding the musician, I must say that Master Sohrab Pournazeri is the best, most famous and most popular traditional musician of Iran. He is proficient in several traditional stringed instruments. As for the singer, Master Homayoun Shajarian is the best, most famous and most popular traditional singer of Iran. Both of them are the honors of Iran. Regarding those numbers, they don't indicate the year, they are the numbers of the poem. Maulana Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi lived between 1207-1273, so this poem is about 750 years ago.

Very nice reaction! Rumi poetry is about love for God but is written in a way that can be interpreted as love for another human as well. All the names in the poem has their own meaning. Not all words should be taken literally. Wine-Bearer I think is the person or the angel or anything that made him get closer to god by getting drunk in getting closer to his presence. I am a bit dense in poem. Other people might be able to help with the meanings better than me. The reason he sings it in sad mode is because he is his presence and is helpless and in awe of God.

Thanks for your reactions to Persian musics. Rumi has not been in love with a woman. He entered into a deep love with God and his poems are actually his conversations with God. These are not love stories but mystical talks. To understand them, it is not enough to know the Persian language, but you must also know the mysticism of Iran. After entering mysticism, people gradually go through the process and reach higher levels. Rumi had reached the highest level of mysticism among Iranian poets. In mystical poems, no word has its apparent meaning. These words are a reference to other meanings that are said in code. For this reason, you and even many Persian speakers and translators of these poems do not understand the meaning of these poems.

In order to better understand the cities of Rumi or Rumi, one should know about his history and life, because the impact of the poem will definitely increase and it will be easier to understand the concepts and feelings of the poem. In general, Rumi was a religious and fanatical cleric who is considered the greatest preacher of Balkh city, and after seeing Shams Tabrizi, a dervish and an old mystic, he puts aside all his religious beliefs and prejudices and leads a romantic and mystic life, of course in this Many stories happen to Rumi that he mentions in his poems.

Rumi, the poet, lived in the 1200s. The numbers you see are numbers of the poems.

He gave up everything for the love of the divine. He is not sad. Rather, he is in a solace state.

Long intro is usual in tradition Persian music. And hamayoun shajarian is from a noble and famous family in Persian music. But actually this video is a bit old and in the past few years, homayoun initiate a revolution in traditional music and mixed it with modern music.

Molana (rumi is the word the Turkish gave him ) is talking to Shams who was a philosopher Rumi met and fell in love with his soul . Not in a romantic way but in an admiring, respectful way .
