As an Englishman I love the Germans! I wish we learnt different languages earlier in school, I didn’t start German until I was 11 and by then it’s too late. The reason we struggle is that we’re not used to masculine and feminine words, I still have nightmares over Der, Die and Das.

English is a germanic language, human beings learn languages faster and easier, when the language is from the same root as their mother tongue. Indogermanic language tree in europe, slavic, romanic, germanic. That's the reason, so people who already do speak a germanic language like obviously german or dutch or swedish etc will have it easier. So they don't just have the same grammar structure, they share the same root, the germanic one.

I grew up in Germany but I’m from Russia so I grew up speaking Russian along with Polish and German. But I failed English so bad In school so I didn’t grasp the language until I was about 14.

I'm really surprised that many people are shocked by their English. Me being both a native speaker in German as well as in English(more or less) it's quite difficult sometimes to hear Germans speak English. Probably mostly because the accent isn't always that suitable and attractive... But after seeing this video I kind of realised that the standard of spoken English here is quite good in comparison to other countries🙈

I am currently 14, and when I lived in Germany, a large majority of schools taught english

Devon Bradford It's not footballers more just Europeans. Most speak English because all the countries in Europe speak different languages so English is used as the common language. Footballers who come from south America such as Messi, Aguero and Neymar speak terrible English because most children aren't taught it there.

I have a friend who did German in uni then met & married a German lady … when he goes to Germany people keep talking to him in English. It used to really annoy him when he was still learning. To be honest, I'd do the same kind of thing if I met a European as in Britain if you can say ANYTHING beyond bonjour/guten tag/hola, it's a status symbol. In fact, you're a genius!
