It's really cool that it's not just a "reaction" channel, but you actually came over and experienced the country. In regards to the DB: Maybe that also explains a bit about not being spontaneous? When I take the train, I basically make an exact plan, especially if I need to catch another train. So I need to check the times of both trains going, and if I need to be on time, I need to know how often they go. I usually add in one backup. So if a train goes every 30 minutes, then plan in +45 Minutes, so if one train doesnt show up, you get the next. If a train goes every 60 minutes, then better add 75 to your schedule to me sure you arrive on time. Regarding the Food: I actually lived in france for over 10 years, and while French food has a reputation to be the best, almost all my friends would agree on missing German food. And Kebab is one of these sings which is also significantly better than in france.

To be fair to the DB: If you put all the well known issues (political, economical) aside, they still have to manage one of the most complex railroad networks of the world. Germany is very decentralized and interconnected, which results in an insane amount of dependencies across different train lines, especially in more densely populated regions like around Köln - which is made even worse by having separate high speed train connections that have to share their railroads with slower ones. Many railroad tracks are already at their absolute limits because purchasing land for adding new tracks is a nightmare in itself, there is a lot of money being invested into developing new train management systems just to cram more trains onto the same tracks without increasing the risk of collisions. Even small delays can have fatal chain reactions for other trains, and if someone decides to un-live themselves by train that's about 4 hours of legal lockdown on that track, which happens way too often - there's a silent agreement among the press to keep such incidents under the rug to avoid motivating others to do the same. If you take a closer look at other countries that are well known for their punctual trains, you'll often notice that they are kind of "playing in easy mode". France e.g. only cares about their high speed trains, the country is so heavily centralized into Paris and a few other larger cities that nobody even notices that they massively neglect their regional train networks for the more profitable TGVs.

Also, everyone should be aware of a psychological phenomenon called the "Availability Heuristic". It's a fascinating and enlightening subject, but simply put, with regards to the train delays, it means that things that are annoyances tend to stick in our heads more than when everything went according to plan. So it may even be that 4 out of 5 times there is no delay of the train, and you just take that as just the way it is, your brain doesn't even really save it. But the 1 out of 5 times where it is late, THAT to your brain is important history being written. You can probably understand how overtime this leads to an increasingly skewed perspective. This is why I say people need to be aware of it so they can correct for it. Because this does not go only for train delays, but a lot of other things too, including such nasty things as racist attitudes.

@@RandyMahnkeThe bigger picture is that the DB has been run down by politics and management for the last 30 years or so and it is starting to show. Yes it is complex system, it is much large than e.g Switzerland, but they also have more personell etc. to manage it. They did not set up the infrastructure of the last decades to be able to manage the demand today and in many places even reduced switches and stuff and did not do maintanance. They started to work on these issues, but it'll be a couple of years until improvements start to show, and that's if they continue to invest in improvements.

@@silkwesir1444 there are enough statistics confirming the experiences. I took 10 long distance train trips since beginning of last year, on 4 of them I was 1 hour late. Where I start my trips, the train basically never leaves on time, I started checking. Sometimes, the train manages to catch up, but it is just an indicator how completely overloaded that station is. DB only counts a train as late if it is at least 6 minutes late and does not count trains and stops that got canceled completely, and still the statistics are bad. Delays like that should be something that a semiregular customer encounters maybe every few years, not several times a year. If you haven't used the DB regularily, or only regional trains in certain areas, you might think this way. But if you use it regularly on the long distance ICE routes, you know, the system is currently completely fucked.

@@salia2897 Well, I hope you got my point anyway. It stands, no matter how frequent the actual delays are. My figure of 1 out of 5 was just a shot in the dark, meant merely for illustrative purposes and not to give an actual estimate. My point was that it is also a psychological phenomenon, which people should be aware of. It has applications from everyday things like arugments with roommates about chores up to extremely relevant topics about how we want to build and maintain a functioning society.

I'm not sure if someone mentioned this yet, but in Germany there's actual laws (DSGVO and BDSG) concerning taking pictures and videos of other people. You're generally allowed to take them for private usage (so vacation photos etc), but if you want to make any footage public, you need permission from people if they're recognizable in the footage. That's why some people will get upset if you film them without their consent etc.

  • @jettekrein8008

    @jettekrein8008

It's a bit deeper. You can like film crowds of people. It's not a problem until someone becomes the center of attention in a shot. If someone is walking past in the background it is not a problem. It also has nothing to do with the DSGVO. The law for this exists way longer. Also it depends on where you are filming. Public places are not a problem. But you can't just film in a store or on a private property without a permission. I'm not really sure but i think the laws are the same in the US. It's just that these laws are obviously really extensive so most people are narrowing them down to "DONT FILM ME IN THE FACE" xD.

One thing that us german unifies.. the hate about the DB actually. Always have an alternative route already planned and ATLEAST, well depends on the distance u need to go, have it planned with atleast 15-45 mins delays.

Tbh this stuff angered me even more after i came back from japan and china.. its abysmal. Also about McD.. i went there last time 6 years ago and got food poisoning. Since than i literally dodge BK and McD's. Even tho compared to US its probably better but still, its trash food. BK in my city also won to be the dirtiest BK in whole of germany lmao.

also very proud of u to atleast try to speak german. U can speak better german compared to some people here that live here for like a decade. Fan since early on of you, you personally improved alot as a person imo. Its so refreshing. sadly im very busy normally, you were in düsseldorf, i live in the city directly nighbouring it, wouldve love to meet you. Many doesnt like to be filmed. Look up Google streetview, it got obliterated here lmao. Many germans, me aswell love to live a bit in the past, also many doesnt even know or like the concept of "content creators".. would actually say its due to aging population and personally i respect that mindset. I got filmed like 3 times in the last 15 years and normally u get askedbeforehand if its okay for you.

I, as a German, also really despise the DB but one funny thing. I went to Austria last Thursday by train. Train was 20 minutes late but managed to settle the delay and we even arrived 6 minutes too early so we had to wait for permission to enter the destination station. One crew member of the train I was in laughingly made an announcement to all passengers and it went something like this "we were late but this very heroic driver of this train managed to undo the delay and now we are even 6 minutes early .... I myself didn't know this was possible for the Deutsche Bahn ... I am so excited and had to tell you this. Who would have ever thought this might happen to anyone of us hahahaha" and the crowd was laughing.

Very cool insights, thank you. To the DB, I always thought it was very much like the 'clacks' company in the book 'going postal' by Terry Pratchett. Just horrible management that brings a great service provider to the ground. When I was a kid, the DB was still synonymous with punctuality and it was pretty cheap. A lot of the old people still think of it that way. When I complain about my commute to work, some old person always suggests taking the train, to which I just exchange an eye roll with a younger coworker. 😅

Omnious Techno Party clubs often even have open for up to 12am and then you still find some afterhour clubs until the evening starts again for clubbing. That was my life for like 2 years in my early 20s. And i took a shitton of substances but damn the german techno scene is just insane.

With water you might also get to ask for a pitcher, "einen Krug Wasser", though you might not be able to always get one. And one time I was out with a good friend of mine and a few of their friends and the pub we were at offered pitchers (!) of hard cider and the four of us had three pitchers over the course of the night, plus a couple of shots. They also offered pitchers of water, but why order water if you can get hard cider?

Some of the filming issue is due to history. Easy example as to influence is East Germany with the secret police and the rebellion against the possibility. Makes things like doorbell cameras an interesting one.

Deutsche Bahn: The german railway was a state railway system. Because of this it was not working profitable. So in 1994 the "Bundesbahn" was privatized into a stock corporation. That was the start of "Deutsche Bahn". The idea was that the railway system would then work more customer and market orientated and would make profit. But as you all know, you make profit when you dismiss employees and reduce investments. Nowadays that is a problem. There is a huge investment backlog. They try to fix it but it will take years to process it.

About the deutsche Bahn issue: I have to get one hour earlier to my work, because I have to plan for delays or cancellations. Also I have to bring water and food with me (was once stuck in a train for 2 hours). Im currently looking for another job, because the travelling by train is just garbage these days. Funny ad inside the trains: "We are building some tracks, so it can come to delays! We know you consider switching to a car, but our trains are way better!" Yea, ads written by people who arent travelling by train at all X D

I always ask for a big bottle of water. Restaurants here in Germany have some strange sizes (often seen 0,75 or 1,25 liters even....). So i try not to specify the actual amount and just go for "eine große Flasche Wasser bitte". Unless you are going for really fine dining they will usually also have only one brand of water and thus only one big size, so you won't have to ask for the biggest size specifically. But i absolutely feel you there. Also a big and thirsty guy here and anything below 1l, especially during a meal, just won't do it.

When I was a trainee, I was late every day for a whole month with the DB. My employer was at least understanding and I don't have to make up for the missing time. To this day, I can't believe how you can be unpunctual for a whole month. In some cases this was up to an hour, or even more.

You nailed it, this was great and welcome to the DB club. I am really curious how Hamburg will turn out as an experience for you. Who knows, might even bump into you and have some drinks. First time on the Reeperbahn (where the majority of nightlife is happening) is a somewhat of a shock even for people from other parts of germany. How to put.. that the oldest profession in the world is legal in germany becomes really obvious once you´re here. Aside from that, you could basically pull of 24/7 by switching places. A party weekend can easily mean having lunch somerwhere all of the sudden. Like sunday lunch, though it feels like it was just friday evening.
