Only thing I did differently is I covered the entire outside of the cake with a chocolate coffee buttercream to make it even more DECADENT! It's like u said Stephanie, this is TRULY a party cake. I can't thank you enough. Will make this again & again. O & BTW..... I SUBSCRIBED!!! 😃😄☺😊

I discovered this video back in 2015, I immediately wanted to bake this cake for Mothers day, but time passed and I continued baking and testing other recipes, last weekend I finally gave this a try and the wait was completely worth it. My family loved this cake, especially the frosting. This is the video that made me fall in love with baking, I have watched it multiple times, I guess what I enjoy the most is your passion and the love you put into teaching us. Thank you Stephanie.

In reply to audiofreun2, it is not actually called German chocolate and certainly not as a marketing strategy to make people think it was German quality. It was originally known as German's chocolate cake, because it was a recipe using German's Chocolate, which was named after Sam German who developed it. Nowadays, it's just known as German Chocolate cake, but that's where it came from. So, not named for a country, but for a person whose last name was German. Great video! Thank you!

Thank you so much for the amazing recipe. I made this yesterday. The cake was dense and incredibly moist. It was almost like a fudgy brownie. My family really enjoyed it. I reduced the amount of sugar to 370g and used chocolate ganache instead of coconut pecan frosting. Because some kids don't like pecan :P

Hello. I absolutely adore 'joy of baking' recipes.. So far I've done your cinnamon rolls, apple pie, banana muffins, oat bran muffins, low fat banana bread, vanilla cupcakes, irish soda bread, red velvet cake and they've all turned out wonderfully. The red velvet cake, especially was an instant hit for a birthday. Your instructions are very calm and easy to follow that make even the toughest ones seem like a "piece of cake". Thank you for your videos Ms Stephanie Jaworski !

Stephanie is from Canada but lives in the US. Grams are far more accurate than cups which is why she mentions them. Plus KZread is a world wide audience and everyone outside of North America uses grams. I suggest you watch the Weight vs Volume video and you will see why she always quotes grams and recommends Americans switch.

Could be a few reasons for this happening. Did you weigh your ingredients as too much or too little of an ingredient can cause problems. Also, this problem can be caused from over mixing the batter or that the oven temperature is too low.

Great recipe. I'm from Europe, so I appreciate that you are converting cups and ounces to grams and milliliters. However, some of them are incorrect. Pecans, coconut, and all kinds of nuts, cannot be in milliliters! Only liquids :) So in this recipe there should be about 128 g of pecans, and about 140 g of coconut :) Thank you, bye!

Why do German chocolate cakes using all purpose flour not call for baking powder. I made one awhile back and it did not call for baking powder, just baking soda. The layers did not rise well and I wanted 3 layers in 9" pans. I don't always have cake flour. I would like to make this cake with all purpose flour and 3, 9' pan. Thanks for your help in advance.

trying Baking soda is normally used in recipes that contain an acidic ingredients. Therefore if your recipes contain things like brown sugar, buttermilk, regular unsweetened cocoa powder, then you need baking soda.

A liter is a unit of volume. It's based on the metric system, in which 1 dm^3 (cubic decimeter) equals 1 liter. For example, you can correctly say "1 liter of flour", but that just isn't much used. And thank you so much for using weight and metric system Stephanie, we really appreciate it =D

Ms. Stephanie--You don't have to answer my question. I was at work when I posted my question and didn't see your recipe video. I assumed it was the standard recipe. I will try your recipe instead. I like the color/hue of your cakes and it's right on time. Someone just minutes ago ordered a GCC for their Thanksgiving table! I'll use my own Coconut Pecan Icing though. You hit on the same 'other' reason I don't too much care for the traditional---I too have always thought it was ridiculously sweet. However, I try and give my clients what they like. Shame though--- I reeeeaaaally love that strange, fine, fluffy texture.....of the 'Original' German Chocolate Cake. Thank you Ms. Stephanie.
