Gerber Armbar Drive

This pocket multi tool is one of the newest releases from Gerber. There are a number of thing that I like about this multi tool. I think it could use some minor improvements, but overall it is a good concept and a good tool.

My "Armbar" has become my daily carry. This is easy to carry and performs very well. The bottle opener/pry feature is ingenious. The knife size and design make this a very useful tool. This replaced all of my "micra's" & "mini's" I've been carrying as well as my EDC knife. You really have to experience this to realize its true value. Great job Gerber!

There is something about this tool that is incredible you missed. you can fit a second double sided hex bit under the scissors and a toothpick or victorianox pen along side it. It does need a pocket clip but for $6 on amazon you can get perfectly adequate clips and rivet it onto the back where those random little holes are. The ability to carry 4, good quality tool bits on a multi tool that fits into a coin pocket of your jeans and aligns so nicely as a proper screw driver is AMAZING. i know of no other tool that can boast the same.

I'm a maintenance tech for an apartment complex and so glad I found this tool on your channel. I always find myself in situations where a screwdriver is needed and I don't carry one in my pocket, not for long will I be with out one. Plus the pry tool is perfect for opening cans of paint. Thanks for all the hard work.

As someone who’s bought like every damn multi tool around.. the Leatherman PST is the best. I wish they built a pocket clip onto the side (a removable one) but it’s small enough to sit in any pocket.

You don't necessarily need the driver to be locking if you understand the physics Gerber implemented. The driver stops past the center of the pivot axis. Therefore, as you apply a clockwise twisting force, that force will translate into a force that pushes the driver arm towards the open position. However, turning counterclockwise is a different story.

Thank you for an excellent, well narrated and to-the-point review. It's so rare to see an American reviewer/ video that's just as comfortable with metric and imperial units in a non-professional environment. It speaks volumes about your exposure and mindset, thus increasing the weight of your words and opinion. I am also in complete agreement with you about how its hard to beat Victorinox in the scissor game. Great stuff. Thanks again.

I like the Armbar, especially the knife blade. It is really a great knife. It is hard to believe, but, for such a compact tool, the Armbar's blade is about 5 mm longer than the blade on the Leatherman Free P4! It is almost the same length as that on the Charge, and is 5mm longer than the blade on the Skeletool. I laugh at complaints about the "poor steel" of the blade. 10 seconds once a week on a sheet of 1200-grit w/d emery paper is all I need to keep the blade razor sharp. If you want a multitool blade that will stay sharp for 12 months, keep dreaming! The scissors work well, and the screwdriver setup is very useful for the occasional need to deal with a screw. Note: "occasional use". If you are building furniture, use a dedicated screwdriver!! No workshop uses a multitool as the main set of tools. The awl is small, but good to scrape, poke a hole, or mark something. The hammer/pry bar/bottle opener is great for opening paint or varnish tins and for tapping the lids closed. Anyone whining about how you can't drive nails with it is just not living in the real world. It's not meant for that! The only other tool I need is a pair of pliers, and unfortunately, this is missing. The Armbar is a really great little compact multitool, with a first-class knife blade. Well done, Gerber!

I really liked the initial look into the Leatherman T series but they were bigger heavier and more expensive than some of my SAKs and they really didn’t have anything different to add. I laser welded a lockout onto my arm bar drive. I agree with it needing a lockout on the screw driver. I wish the scissor was a file with flat head on the end. Then a single sided Philips in the 1/4 driver. I ground the sheath of the 1/4 driver down so standard bits stay in really well. The double sided bit falls out and gets lost.

I feel like Gerber could have designed a simple line or spring lock for the driver, which could double as a pocket clip. These multi tools are getting better each year though so I'm looking forward to seeing more improvements!

Excellent review. I really hope Gerber listens! You could easy add a slim pocket clip onto that design. Get rid of the awl, beef up the scissors & add some sort of pivot lock to the screwdriver to securely hold it open. If I'm gonna not pick Gerber, then they need to put a good quality steel on that blade. Why not S30v? Charge $40-45 & they would have a grand slam on their hands instead of an RBI.

I bought this for the screwdriver, the fact that it doesn't lock out is a major drawback. Get rid of the awl and add a liner lock. As you stated the blade is great and the scissors are serviceable for light duty. A hole in the pry-bar would make a great lanyard attachment point as well (I attached one near the blade tip).

Tnx I was looking at that yesterday. The blade looks great but the scissors are so so. I don't like completely exposed springs and as you said it doesn't open the blades enough. The only thing as bad or worse than no scissors is poorly functioning scissors. And that is when it's brand new. The driver pivoting I could get around but why bother if the scissors are poorly made.

Mine has a noticeably stronger slipjoint then yours. Still soft, but not as bad as that. It should be important to note that this is a LIGHT duty MT and is advertised as that sorta idea. Similar to the skeletools from leatherman, which is no where near as durable or should be used in a way like the surge or supertool. I’ve tested mine on light switch screws and other various (table, doorknob) screws and it did fine. Trying to drive a pilots hole in wood with the awl was good too. Didn’t disengage once with hard pushing. The driver during some (what I would think to be) heavy duty prying did disengage but I was asking to much of it, and, the pivot remained solid. No blade play

excellent video you mentioned that the most useful parts of a multi tool are the pliers the knife and a good driver and i cant agree more do you know if there is a good multi tool with these three features on the market, the best i can see is the Leatherman skeletool but i dont like the leatherman proprietary bits and the gerber center drive witch i dont like the plier rail system. is there a good multi tool on the market with a good knife, a good driver & a good pair of pliers

  • @txtoolcrib

    @txtoolcrib

    4 жыл бұрын

The problem is, that different brands have different strengths. I myself prefer Leatherman most of the time, but you said you don't like the proprietary bits they incorporate. Victorinox makes excellent multi tools on the whole, but I find their plier design very limiting. SOG makes excellent pliers, but their other tools leave quite a bit to be desired. Maybe pairing a Leatherman tool like a Surge, Wave, Supertool 300, or Rebar with the Victorinox bit accessory kit would work for you. Their drivers work independent of the multi tool. Might be a solution that would suit your needs.

Needing a lock on a less than 3" screwdriver is ridiculous, this is not meant to tighten drywall screws, this is for gentle type of work. Knife is superb and retains edge very well. I think awl could have been beefier and having an eyelet. Scissors are the best I have ever seen at a tool. Much better than on other Gerber mutitools or Leatherman's. Pretty good tool, very "pocketable".
