Gerald Gardner and Wicca on the Isle of Man: A talk by John Callow

A talk about the "father of modern witchcraft," Gerald Gardner, and his time in the Isle of Man.
Still well-remembered for his time at the "Witches' Mill" on the edge of Castletown, Gardner has always held a fascination for Manx people.
John Callow here explains Gardner's background, how he came to the Island, the contacts he made and the people he inspired. Unpicking the facts from the fiction, Callow explains the absolute importance of the Manx years in Gardner's life, and how it gave rise to the Wicca religion practiced all over the world today.
John Callow is an author, historian and trade unionist. He has written widely on Early Modern witchcraft, politics and popular culture.

Thank you for sharing this excellent talk. I'm of the Wica. My mentor, Charles Clark, who was a ranking Freemason and Ceremonial Magician met Gardner through the Fate (magazine) Club in the Fifties. He was subsequently initiated through him, becoming his Scottish depute and UK Secretary, taking his books around to sell because the bookshops wouldn't stock them.
Went every year to the IOM from `55 to `65. Port Erin/ Castletown. Met Gardner about `63` and he showed me around his place explaining what he was about.He had a big collection of old weapons I remember. Nice bloke .It was the beginning of the `60`s and the subsequent generation gap but he never the less gave his time to answer what were no doubt rather daft questions from a young kid .
