Chopin was a poet of the piano, so is Mr. Osokins IMHO.....very philosophical, deep, and equally beautiful and fulfilling on the extremes of tenderness and sorrow and the outpouring of extroverted and triumphant energy. Such nuanced and delicate with his sound in the quiter calmer sections and such power and passion where it is called for by the music. He has grown do much from the last competition....a true artist.....so sad and disappointed that he didn't pass to the 3rd round......why?? Is a rhetorical question I guess....or the one that has too many speculative answers....

Listening to his music and his interview, one understands that this young man looks at the world globally with a mature perception and cleverness, while his angry critics look at it only fragmentarily. For Osokins, art is a unity, while for people with a narrow mind, art consists of individual parts standing in quotation marks. He paints large canvases, while his critics pick out details and dissect them with a magnifying glass. The future belongs to this talent of feeling art holistically, while it still irritates the profane mind.

The people judging the Contest should ask themselves one question: if they are looking for a great pianist playing Chopin or... best pianist imitating Chopin. Georgijs was my favourite six years ago and I had so much pleasure listening to him being grown and independent. He clearly has a great, poetic and artistic mind.

They should clean house and get rid of some of those old fossils perennially on the juries. Can't they find anyone under the age of 60? Need some fresh air in the jury room? And consider bringing in some new consultants on adjusting the "rules" or "scoring system" used. This is the 21st Century!!

I saw videos of his performances in the 2015 competition whilst I was getting back into piano and learning Chopin, and the way he captures the emotions of Chopin hit me on another level. Maybe not conventional, but he plays with true freedom. He was such an inspiration to me when I was learning pieces again, and I even saw him live 2 years ago. I waved to him before the start and he waved back! Seeing his performances inspired me to learn the diploma, and now I'm doing my ARSM exam next month. Was so happy to see him back this time. Even though you didn't make the next round, just know your playing is an inspiration to me, and I sure many others who watch this! And sometimes that's far greater than winning a competition.

He's introspective, characterful and brings out a lot of character from the CFX's he chooses. Since he's so big on articulation, this is a highly expressive way of playing in an almost vocal manner. Yet he can also create atmospheres in manipulating his touch and tone and brings out the shapes of the inner voices melodies and counterpoint that Chopin's melodic accompaniment can make. The other factor is rhythm. He can have a motor rhythm when needed as well to create a waltz, march, or whatever type of rhythm that's part of the music.

It was a very original interpretation, but I think he was coherent throughout the piece with his choices. We are not used to listen to it played like that, that's why it could sound weird.

Did we hear Chopin perform to know? Maybe Chopin took liberties with his music we're not aware of. At least, to my ears, some of Chopin has a recitative/improvised sense.
