I know exactly how to counter that strategy every time they feint BJ should have thrown punches instead of reacting defensively. You will actually get tired more not throwing because of the same theory George Saint Pierre just talked about that’s why it’s best to throw punches in the situation rather than to react defensively

@Lxnkzi I'm with you, my brother. khabib is a bad dude that won a LOT of fights, but he wasn't GSP. Georges worked his way up the rankings, then won the title, took back every loss he ever had, and cleaned the division out 2 or 3 times? Then beat Bisping at 185 for fun. Khabib defended his belt twice? How did he never go up to 170? Not even try? Khabib the great wouldn't do what Coboy Cerrone did?

I have been a long time Tekken player and now am a black belt in Kyokushin karate a well as been training Kickboxing for over 6 years. The biggest things I learnt after I built a solid foundation in martial arts was from Tekken. I always tried to react to things and be faster but as I got older I learnt very fast I wasn't as fast as I thought. I had so much trouble dealing with fast and tricky fighters. But Tekken taught me about 'option select' which in the game was basically using movement and spacing to understand the range of risks that could be thrown at you at a given spacing so you have to calculate the least amount of options in your brain and predict moves and counter appropriately. This changed the way I fight because it's easy to be overwhelmed in a fight when the person is fast and tricky. But understanding the relationship between the space and the strike reduces that feeling and allows you to reduces your sensory overload, thus reducing fatigue, thus increasing efficiency. When I paired 'option select' with 'whiff punishing' and 'challenging' I noticed my fight IQ really grew and my success went up. Don't get me wrong reactions are still essential in combat Sports but it's not everything it's made to be. Sometimes reacting to a combo isn't just the 'physical' reaction, it's reading the space and conditioning of the opponent that made the opponent's settup readable. Once you've committed to the educated low energy mental decisions you commit to the counter with 'confidence'. And the more confident you are in your reads the less taxing the body movement will be. In theory the better your deduction skills under pressure the better you are at effectively fighting.

His philosophy towards overloading an opponents CNS and reducing their reaction time is interesting as hell. If you watch the video on why GSPs superman jabs were so effective (which nobody else seems to emulate well), it basically goes hand in hand with his fighting theory. GSP was a master at being able to chain his superman punch into multiple options such as a kick, takedown, or another punch. On top of that he could start multiple techniques using the same motion, so he could start throwing something, read the reaction, and then change his own move into something different, eg faking a superman jab into a double leg fighting him must have felt like a nightmare trying to figure out what was coming at you which, like he said, would then overload and lower your reflexes and then make everything so much worse

There is no way around this too, because "Reacting" uses a different neural circuit from "choosing an option". The shift is about 200-250 milliseconds but that is enough time to delay a muscle reaction.

It’s similar but he’s talking about it in regards to all different types of attacks. In boxing you can feint different types of punches and hip movements, but in mma you can feint a huge amount of things. Because of the threat of takedowns you can feint entire body movements causing the opponents body to tighten up and prepare to sprawl as a defense, which would take a lot more out of you than just needing to parry a punch.
