Georges St-Pierre retirement press conference: ‘No tears’ in going out on top | ESPN MMA

Спорт

Former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre announces his retirement from mixed martial arts, citing he is “very happy” to retire at the top of the sport and wanted to do so on his own terms. GSP addresses discussions with the UFC for a potential fight with lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, revealing the promotion has other plans for Khabib, and adding that he is a little disappointed that the bout will not come to fruition (0:47). St-Pierre describes the proudest moment of his career, which was when he was dropped by a head kick from Carlos Condit at UFC 154 and still managed to get back up and continue the fight (5:16). As much as he loves to fight, St-Pierre iterates that MMA isn’t his whole life and he has other plans, including spending time with his family (7:13). In regards to Dana White possibly calling him in the future about a fight with Khabib, GSP doesn’t know where his mind will be, but for now he is retired (8:57).

GSP is one of the top 10 welterweight of all times but he isn't even close to the greatest of all times. GSP left MMA when the competition got tougher with fighters that are better than the ones he fought before. Tyron Woodley, Darren Till, Stephan Thompson, Kamaru Usman, Colby Coveington, Robbie Lawler, etc. Instead of challenging Khabib, GSP should have challenge Tyron Woodley instead to prove that he is still the #1 welterweight fighter but yet he backs off and only wants to fight Conor or Khabib. This shows you just how scare GSP is and if you dumb fans here says that GSP has nothing left to prove, he has everything left to prove cause there are challengers waiting so he dine and dash. I give Anderson Silva a lot of props willing to fight any fighter coming his way even at age 43. Anderson is old now, but he is facing the new challengers head on and that's what fighters do is accept the challenges coming at you. Y'all GSP fans just cannot accept that the new challengers can literally beat the crap out of GSP

@@kayhass2510 Yeah because they don't care about GSP they care about the promotion first, and then only in the sense that they want to look only to the next payouts.... GSP has been the ambassador for the sport for a long time, a clean fighter, a well spoken fighter, a true martial artist also able to speak elegantly and promote his sport to more people as ever before. That's part of his legacy, and part of why the UFC grew bigger when he was fighting constantly. The promotion GSP has done for the UFC should be repaid not just with the money GSP already made with his fights ( I do believe he as a good buisiness man has made his money already... ) but also by granting him this fight because it's about the 100% sure GOAT moniker. I know it's a risk, if GSP wins he will walk away afterwards, leaving UFC without a champion and they think this will hurt their next fights in the division... On the other hand if they don't allow the fight, like they do now, they are pissing of a LOT of people who want to see this happen because they got the respect for GSP, and want to see two of contenders for being GOAT to compete with eachother. I don't care about UFC making more money, I care about watching fighters compete with eachother, that's the difference and that's why I don't care if UFC is shortsighted. They are able to loose more from not doing the fight then they are from letting it play out, they just don't realize how many people they are pissing off to the point where they just might not want to give the promotion more money.

I think the UFC is realizing the ill effects of allowing stars to hop around divisions, attain belts that they won't defend, cherry pick opponents for the sake of PPV points. I would like to see Khabib vs GSP. But the fight is more valid AFTER Khabib defends his belt with Tony. Khabib already had his money/super fight with Conor( who fought nobody, since Alvarez, at 155 before fighting for the title ). 155 is stacked and GSP jumping in puts the brakes on several top contenders ability to fight for the belt. Are Fergeson, Poirier, and Iaquinta all just supposed to sit on a shelf and get old while Khabib fights the greatest of yesteryear? I don't think the UFC should neglect present and future talent for the sake of one offs with legends. That would be cutting off the nose to spite the face to me.

Vijay Iyer he fights for legacy. Not fighters who are not known. When you rise to the top, you become selective. And that is not what you said. You said he has been gone for 5 years which is not correct. He fought in 2017 after being gone for 4. Now he is official retiring, meaning no more fighting.
