Welcome to Canada ! Read the Book 1984 and you'll understand where Canada is going !
I have been coming to the race since 2007 and Its the same story every year with the police, they act like they are running the show and treat fans who are simply trying to get to the track like criminals. They are rude, demanding and slow down traffic on the one bridge to the island with their "traffic directing". Its an absolute mess each year. The event organizers are to blame here too. They want everyone to take the metro (which is a great and efficient way to get to the the track), but after the day is over there is always overcrowding and bottlenecking at the metro entrance as everyone tries to get home, to the point where I have become fed up with the wait times and now take my car and park at the casino instead. Interestingly, the police don't seem to like this and interrogate anyone trying to get the island via car (you have to convince them you are there for the casino games, and not the race), meanwhile the casino employees welcome us with open arms knowing we are there to park and go to the race. At the same time, the event organizers close the bixi stations (bicycle rentals) on the island so you have no alternative to the crowded metro. on the Friday we decided to take the metro into the island as we noticed everything was backed up and not moving since the police arbitrarily decided to shut everything down. (luckily we showed up after the gates were reopened after the big storm), but decided to take a taxi back home (after trying to take bixi bikes but were told that was closed too) to avoid the wait at the metro station. we witnessed a group of 4 waiting in line for a taxi in front of us being refused service because the taxi driver didn't want to take 4 people (???). This is one of the Gems on the F1 calendar for me, I look forward to the weekend each year as a Montrealer and F1 fan and the event has been taking palace here since 1978, and yet no improvements seem to have been made to make the access too and from the island any better. between the crowded metro system, the empty parking spaces because the police intimidate people who want to park at the casino, the corrupt taxi system that refuses groups of passengers so they have to split up and pay 2x the fare and shutting down the bixi stations so you cant even bike to and from the island - no wonder fans are upset. its a shame because the racing and atmosphere at the track is amazing, the food and drink selection is actually quite good (sometimes pricey, but sometimes better than expected), however if the event is going to keep going and they continue to sell more tickets each passing year, that island wont be able to support the growing number of fans soon enough. The muddy pathways and pedestrian bottlenecks around the island make getting around a bit tough at some spots (although as the island is also a park, there are some beautiful and quiet places to hang out in between sessions, which is quite nice). Its about time the organizers consider investing in better infrastructure for access to the island and to improve the services for the every day fan, instead of constantly jacking up the prices of the tickets each year and then building more loges and expensive VIP seating) Thank you Kym for bringing some of these issue to light, and I hope this has not tarnished your image of this beautiful city and memorable race track. I can only hope some of these messages get through to F1, the even organizers, the city of Montreal and the SPVM, so that we can fix these issues for the coming years.
Thanks for covering this Kym. Boots on the ground for real!
The calendar takes us to Azerbaijan, Saudi, Qatar, China, Bahrain and Brazil but yet Canada is causing the most problems..

@@jimbo992 The province of Quebec has pseudo-sovreign laws that are intended primarily to protect its unique French culture. These are mostly about language - requiring eg. businesses to operate officially in French, most schools to teach in French, and the like. Quebec has its own pension and related finance laws. There is a Quebec "National Assembly" which sets forth such laws. Nice place to visit if you're in Quebec City... But other than that, it is one of the provinces/territories of Canada. Several plebiscites (votes) on 'breaking away' from Canada have occurred in recent years, but each has - albeit by a small margin, resulted in continued identification as a province of Canada. Montreal, as the second (off top of head) largest city in Canada has crime rates and issues commensurate with that status, and the Montreal police don't take sh*t lightly. Toronto cops are probably not too far behind. But I'll take both/either over any US cops, thanks. Keep in mind that in Canada, almost everyone is unarmed, so the cops seldom 'shoot first, ask questions later'.

@@qua000705 it seems strange. I’ve been travelling around Canada for a month and Quebec and Montreal have confused me. I knew there was a French connection but not to this extent. Everything’s in French, people won’t speak English, they all think they’re French. But they’re not (sorry to say it). Would they not be just as much British as French given the history? Canada truly is odd…

@@qua000705 I also found the Canadians to be very friendly and welcoming - until I got to Quebec!
The Montreal police are not well liked usually. Albeit no one have a total lot of hate towards them, but its very frustrating dealing with and are rude. Basically giving out tickets when they want, to pedestrians no less, in fucking one of the most visited spot in the city. After having a new contract couple years back. Seems just got worse after I left. They do to their head and emotion, not backing down and tantrum, rude and not explaining things. Dunno even if it is cancelled why won’t they let people go in? By the way, dunno if it is sabotaged, Montreal have its lot of green prehistoric eco idealist who dont like anything
0:04 Kym, 10/10 for the photoshop 😊 It was the better thumbnail.
This is so embarrassing for the Canadian GP. Honestly F1 should not stand for this, to have one of their drivers hassled by the incompetent Montreal PD, they should pull the race from future calendars.

It sounds like the Canadian police were expecting some type of kick back and didn't get it. Canada is going down just like the U.S.

As I understand it, Russel took a route that was correct before, so an honest mistake. On the way to the F1 track, I think a race driver should be treated differently, do you think they should go the same route as the public? Like taking the train to FP1 and FP2... I know what you mean, " being the same under the law", but I don't think it is fully applicable here.
