    I feel that, even if you aren't going to publish a map with your novel, you should still sketch one out so you know where everything is and which direction people will be going if they travel or refer to things in other regions. And use Inkarnate :-) It's awesome.

    i'd err on not publishing it unless really necessary. people will nitpick it to death and try to read into how long certain things should take based on how exactly the proportions are in the map, rather than how it is described in prose. it's the exact same reason most fantasy books use extremely vague signifiers of the size of armed forces, because it's incredibly hard to pin point exactly how much manpower one piece of land should realistically have.

    A Game of Thrones has a map of "The North" and "The South" then there's Prologue, Bran, Catelyn, and boom there's Daenerys in a place called Pentos that's nowhere on the maps, and your only hint as to what the hell is going on is a few mentions of The Narrow Sea vaguely related to the first part: If you watch anime or read manga, it seems whenever a world map is shown there's a 80% chance it's just the shapes of Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku rearranged a bit

    Such a shame he more than likely will not get to finish his masterpiece. I believe at some point Winds of Winter will eventually come out, but there is a good chance Dream of Spring will not. His plans for a second Fire and Blood book and 3-9 more Dunk and Egg novellas obviously won't happen. Can you imagine if he would have been able to get all that done? The ASOIAF world is so rich and there are so many stories to tell, so many different people and houses to write about. His world building is amazing.

    They'll get easier to write after TWOW. The first books were faster, because most characters were near each other, but as the story progresses to 'The Middle' of the story, everyone is scattered, requiring more POVs. Now they're coming together in the big battles (Mereen, Winterfell, and possibly Storms End). Once these battles are resolved, the after-events will be the characters continually re-converging, with fewer POVs.

    If he had kids, I can guarantee that there's not a single book getting published. Plenty of the greatest people doesn't have children, because their body of work is where their sense of achievement lay. Having family takes second place to the work. Meanwhile, a lot of people who has children, would rather step back from the work and let their children be their achievement. Instead of being proud of their own achievement, they would rather be proud of their children achievements.

    Martin is quite right. Maps are there so the reader knows where stuff is. It's kind of important when people are talking about and moving around entirely made up places. Rothfuss's stuff about it just being Tolkien's influence is an overcomplicated and unlikely explanation. Occam's razor works here.

    I do like how he mentions that a map could serve a narrative purpose as well, like in The Hobbit's case it was the literal map they used in the story. Not always necessary, but still interesting to think about.

  • @AstaraBrightwing

    @AstaraBrightwing

    It's kind of odd for you to invoke Occam's Razor here. "Lots of authors do it because the most influential writer in the genre, from whom almost all of their works partly derive, did it," isn't exactly an unlikely hypothesis. I'd guess that for every writer who makes a map because they feel it's necessary, another writer makes a map because they just feel like that's what they're supposed to do.

    Tbh I think the process that takes the longest time (even more than the writing process) is the planning. Of course that depends on the story you're writing. For example, when writing a story in the "real" world, you don't have to spend hundrets of hours developing a fictional word with diffrent cultures, landscapes, mythologies, politics etc. But especially for fantasy books designing a whole f*cking world will take a lot of time. But that's not the only thing you have to do. You still need to develop a plot (or multiple in this case), create complex characters etc. And in a book series so long and complex and detailed as A Song of Ice and Fire, that takes a huuuuge amount of time...

    you can't have the most detailed, vast, intertwined, hundreds of unique characters, a massive detailed world, everything being connected to each other and foreshadowed and affected by each other and overall something that takes more effort than any other story and also having it being finished in time as well. I don't think people understand how much effort needs to go in to the last two or three books, since it has to make sense, everything that's already been established has to be taken in to consideration and overall he can't just sit down and write since everything is connected to each other and he has to take in to account no matter which story line he's writing.

    Yeah, Tolkien was a linguist, creating a language was his idea of a good time, as it is for most language geeks. As a language geek myself, I can attest that they have a fascination with language at a very fundamental level. How languages are different, how they're similar, what phonemes does this language utilize compared to this one, and so on. Or, most intriguingly, how a language evolves with time, how that evolution influences and is influenced by culture, and how a language affects and informs its speakers' very perception of the entire world. When you share these fascinations, creating your own *_conlang_*_ (constructed language)_ just sounds like a good time. Otherwise, or if it sounds boring to you, then skip it. If you don't have a passion for it your conlang is gonna fall flat. But, *_ɪf juːv lɝnd haʊ tə ɹid IPA dʒʌst fɔːɹ fʌn,_* then creating a language is right up your alley
