Lyrics
No more lying friends
Wanting tragic ends
Though they do pretend
They won't go when i go
All those bleeding hearts
With sorrows to impart
Were right here from the start
And they won't go when i go
And i'll go where i've longed
To go so long
Away from tears
Gone from painful cries
Away from saddened eyes
Along with him i'll bide
Because they won't go when i go
Big men feeling small
Weak ones standing tall
I will watch them fall
They won't go when i go
And i'll go where i've longed
To go so long
Away from tears
Unclean minds mislead the pure
The innocent will leave for sure
For them there is a resting place
People sinning just for fun
They will never see the sun
For they can never show their faces
There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner
Who will take more than he will give
He ain't hardly gonna give
The greed of man will be
Far away from me
And my soul will be free
They won't go when i go
Since my soul conceived
All that i believe
The kingdom i will see
'Cause they won't go when i go
When i go
Where i'll go
No one can keep me
From my destiny

Back in 1991 I was 18 years old. I was in a very low place and trying to get clean. My counselor gave me this tape. I had never been a fan of George Michael but she said just listen to something other than what you normally listen to. (which was at the time a lot of metal) This song I believe was on the b side. I had heard Stevie Wonder sing this song because my mom was big into motown. I never gave it much thought but I heard this version and His voice spoke to me. I listened to this song on repeat for weeks. Worked through some really shitty stuff and came out on the other side feeling like I could beat it. I have not touched cocaine since then and this song still gives me chills like it's god speaking to me and giving me courage to get through another day.

Spot on. I saw him twice and from all the countless concerts I went to they stand out amongst the very best. Best sounding voice I ever heard. Almost unreal. Check his 'Live In London' dvd, because it really conveys the feeling very well. He was a mesmerizing multi-talented genius.

Who else is listening to this song by Sir George Michael today? Miss him and his music so much, but I know he's at peace. He said so himself "...my soul will be free, they won't go when I go." The good ones leave us too early. RIP GM ❤ you loved people and the world so much, but the world and people did not show you all the love you were due, when you were on earth, and walking amongst us. Your music will forever live on, as you intended.

Aside from the unreal, untouchable vocals, there are two other examples of George's incredible talent and genius here: (1) Lead vocals were recorded live in one take, and (2) George did all the background vocals, forcing himself to alter his natural rhythms, pacing and phrasing so it would sound like a real choir. GENIUS.

Coupled with the passion and vulnerability that he delivers when he sings elevates his songs and his covers to a level that can't be touched by anybody else. Thank you for the perfectly worded sentiment. Before this album I would have said that One more try was his best track. However his sophomore effort admonished us to truly listen without prejudice. "They won't go" is a tour de force and the Pinnacle of his vocal ability! He is missed but allow me to quote careless whisper and say your legacy is forever etched in the "hearts and minds" of legions of fans.

To me his voice is amazing b/c even though it's acrobatic, flexible, and supple and he can perform any style of music it is still distinctly George Michael no matter what. The saddest part is that over his career he got better and better....it's so sad to think about what we missed. There's a fun video of him singing 'I feel Good' live at the Paris Opera house ... the ease he shows while performing it... the shot from behind of the audience just swinging along. It's precious and I'm glad it's preserved on film to enjoy over and over.

As famous as he was, our man hasn't gotten his due for all the contributions he made to modern music as a vocalist, songwriter and producer. But eventually he will get his due. THANK YOU GEORGE. Naturally talented, skilled and looks aside, a beautiful sincere soul. Those sentiments and will never change for me. They're his trade mark. That unique and recognisable voice that transcends time and space. I miss him still! 5.8.20 X😇

I am just blown away by his performance, because this is not the kind of song that I ever would have imagined George M. would record. His voice was powerful enough to carry it off and his interpretation was just beautiful. RIP, G.M.

I have great respect for Stevie Wonder, both as a human being and as a songwriter. However, I never did get into his music much and I was so amazed at how GM's covers made me see SW's composition through new eyes. George, for this cover alone - much less Jesus to a Child, I Can't Make You Love Me, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, among many divine songs - your place in heaven is secure. And so will your place in human history. For as long as there is one person left in this world who is moved by the sound of your voice, you will remain ever relevant. I feel your absence in this world profoundly. Have never been a screaming fan of any artist so the depth of my feelings for someone I have never met ... are a testament of what true talent can do, how it can reach across cultures and global barriers to reach anyone who is moved by your voice and creations. You have reached immortality. Love and respect. How I wish we could have had more time ("Praying for Time" ... but didn't get it) but thank you for all that you have left us.

My dad passed away due to COVID. I couldn't be there with him ....couldn't be there to save him as hard as I tried....couldn't be there to say my last goodbyes.....and couldn't be there to lay him to rest. This song shreds my soul and makes me miss my father and makes my life feel meaningless. It makes me miss him so much. This song makes me long to be with him again when I die.... I cannot describe the pain of not being with my father during his last moments. I know many others went through something very similar especially because of this horrible pandemic. My heart goes out to all of you. I am sorry.... I am crushed and wonder if I will ever recover from this loss and the way it happened. Thank you George Michael and Stevie Wonder for this beautiful, one of a kind song. Thank you!
