Lyrics
My mother had a brother
They say that I was born on the day that he died
Someone to cling to, she said
When all the noises and the shame came calling
My mother had a brother
I thought I knew them all, I thought I knew
But she lied
I said, "Show me his face again, tell me again why he died"
She said he couldn't wait for the things that I've seen
She said he wasn't strong enough, he never dared to dream a life like mine
My mother had a brother
Over-sensitive and kind
Seems it all became too much for him..
It seems he took his own life
Mum, I can't imagine the joy and pain in equal measure
Tears in the dirt, and all over your newborn treasure
I guess he had to wait until my momma had me
I guess he couldn't wait another moment to be free
In endless sky.....
But mama will you tell him from your boy
The times they changed
I guess the world was getting warmer
And we got stronger
Mother will you tell him about my joy
I live each day for him
The sun came out, yeah, and I'm just breathing it in
[breathing...]
My mother had a brother
Same desire, different time
Seems the empty spaces tortured him
Until he took his own life
I don't know why I waited so long for love
I just don't know what I was thinking of..
All that wasted time
But mama will you tell him from your boy
The times they changed
I guess the world was getting warmer
While we got stronger
Mother will you tell him about my joy
I live each day with him
Your son came out, yeah,
And I'm still breathing it in
And I swear now that freedom is here
I'm gonna taste it all for you boy
I'm bad to the bone, I'm just a little torn
I'm making so much love
So those of us who have nothing to fear
We've got to make damn sure that it was worth it
I'm bad to the bone, I'm just a little stoned
I'm making so much love
I was a prisoner, but he saved me
Broke into my dreams and said, "Who cares?"
I was a prisoner, so disgrace me
I'm glad to be home
And I don't believe they care.

This man had so much empathy, to write a song about an uncle he never met who sadly commit suicide and empathise with his mother, such a beautiful quality and showed what a thoughtful man he was, very deep and a beautiful soul. You're missed George.

There's not a lot of vocalists who can make say people like Elton John and Billy Joel look average. And They are both remarkable artists. But man, George just shreds it with range, variance, and virtuosic epic ness. Time and time again. Pack in the emotional punch to society that this track delivers. And it's ethereal. And tragic. RIP George. Sad day. Sad day.

the dispute between George and Elton arose in 2004 because Elton criticised George's album Patience. It was too depressing he said. Honestly Elton, i'm a fan of your music but you were so wrong here! This album is rich in emotion, social criticism, tragedy, sadness, pain and love - all in the context of his life. This album is an absolute musical masterpiece and a legacy from George to us all.

Amen! I love Billy and Elton songs. But I had to laugh at Eltons ripping on George for making this sad (or whatever word he used) music when he should've been making pop songs, in Eltons opinion. I'm so glad George was himself, as I rarely listen to Elton's songs a whole lot each year, but George songs are played weekly by me! And he performed this in Florida 13 yrs ago and I was so happy to hear it. And of course, he was so richly voiced just like the studio version!

@@michaelageorge7517 right, and Elton not appreciating the raw honesty of the maturity of the lyrics was sad. He wanted George to have his type of career. That's Eltons. George was about respecting his music that came from his heart and not caring if it was too sad or gay themed. Elton plays for the radios, and great. George matured beyond that to artistry.

This song always reminds me of my uncle. Fortunately he sought the security and safety of the priesthood, instead of deaths embrace by suicide. It wasn't until after his death that anyone in the family found out he had been vacationing with the same man for 30 years, or what that relationship represented and meant to them. Society never allowed him to proudly present himself and who he loved. Society only offered the option of to deny. Deny oneself, and deny ones family is to deny love. Love is the most basic of human needs, and to deny one love, the ability to love, or the opportunity for love is the most monstrous form of oppression. That is why I marched, made noise, and held people accountable for their BS forcing them to look at the ugliness staring back at them in the mirror. It didn't make me popular, they called me an angry person, angry at the world. Angry people are easy to discount, easing the burden of self exam you see. I was one of tens of thousands of angry people. Angry people doing a their small part, any part to make equality real, loves possibilities real, and to make us real TO THEM because you don't get more real than the family you choose. So go ahead call me angry, and you can go, and kiss my ass. So you see George you remind me to remember the best me, you remind me of love. Thank you! Me Just one of your boys

May your soul rest in peace and be blessed. I feel for you George cause ill gone through the same path like you. Staying in a country where people like us is prohibited. But ill still hang on till my last breath. Thank you George for your beautiful song for me to hang on. Blessed you. Ameen.

My mother had a brother They say that I was born on the day that he died Someone to cling to, she said When all the noises and the shame came calling My mother had a brother I thought I knew them all, I thought I knew But she lied I said, "Show me his face again, tell me again why he died" She said he couldn't wait for the things that I've seen She said he wasn't strong enough, he never dared to dream a life like mine My mother had a brother Over-sensitive and kind Seems it all became too much for him. It seems he took his own life Mum, I can't imagine the joy and pain in equal measure Tears in the dirt, and all over your newborn treasure I guess he had to wait until my momma had me I guess he couldn't wait another moment to be free In endless sky But mama will you tell him from your boy The times they changed I guess the world was getting warmer And we got stronger Mother will you tell him about my joy I live each day for him The sun came out, yeah, and I'm just breathing it in My mother had a brother Same desire, different time Seems the empty spaces tortured him Until he took his own life I don't know why I waited so long for love I just don't know what I was thinking of All that wasted time But mama will you tell him from your boy The times they changed I guess the world was getting warmer While we got stronger Mother will you tell him about my joy I live each day with him Your son came out, yeah, And I'm still breathing it in And I swear now that freedom is here I'm gonna taste it all for you boy I'm bad to the bone, I'm just a little torn I'm making so much love So those of us who have nothing to fear We've got to make damn sure that it was worth it I'm bad to the bone, I'm just a little stoned I'm making so much love I was a prisoner, but he saved me Broke into my dreams and said, "Who cares?" I was a prisoner, so disgrace me I'm glad to be home And I don't believe they care.
