George Lopez- George thinks Carmen can't make it to College

George did bring up good points. George tried to give Carmen the advantages that he never had as a kid. Carmen had the privilege of going to a private school that his parents could barely afford but end up getting expelled due to missing an important test to be with a good for nothing loser. She had the privilege of being homeschooled but never took it seriously. She seems to care more about Jason, her looks, and hair

I know what George said was wrong since he never pushed Carmen into trying hard, but can you really blame him? He brought up valid points on how all Carmen care about is her looks and boys. With public school she was forced out (which I don’t blame her), she got kicked out of private school due to running away during important tests, and broke rules. Carmen even acted lazy when Angie homeschooled her.

George was entirely justified in his feelings and points, but he should've phrased it better. What she didn't realize and neither parent bothered to point out was the college is way too expensive to suck at it and the professors don't care if you show up and meet standards or not. They get paid, period. If you need a couple bumps along the way in K-12 to make it, the teachers will help you. With Carmen's attitude towards literally everything, those professors would laugh in her face and say better luck next semester. She needed that eye opening talk but instead she got what seemed like her dad not believing she would amount to anything.

Sonal Nayak Pretty sure he meant she wouldn’t do well in college if she were to have the same mindset and work ethic she currently had in high school only making C’s and D’s and focusing more on boys and her looks rather than school work. George isn’t stupid, he’s just seeing things as they are. Don’t forget George came from a rough background being dyslexic and not having much support at home with an alcoholic mother and an absent father and struggled to survive at times growing up but still managed to graduate high school and worked his way up to become manager of a company despite having little to no college experience, so George isn’t stupid. I wanna be on Carmen's side, but it was really hard to be on her side when looking back at the series Carmen wanted to get pregnant and married with Jason, ran away from home with Zack and even abandoned him so she can live on her own at 15 years old. George maybe an asshole to his own daughter in this scene, but even if Benny had a point that George never showed potential or ambition in something, you can't really deny that due to Carmen's actions throughout the series George's opinion about her is justified.

Looking back on the series now, Angie was a poor parent. She was too soft, and enabled Carmen’s and Max’s bad behaviors. And George honestly has a point. They were almost put into bankruptcy to send her to a private school to escape the bullying and which she got kicked out anyway. She ran away with a low life guy, and took everything they gave her for granted. George reassessed his expectations for Carmen after she ran away, and I can’t blame him. If she didn’t show any sort of interest to pursue college, he wouldn’t expect her to go to college. Though George has his own faults and he realizes he screwed up with Carmen after she left.

I don’t disagree about Angie but I feel like George was sheltering his kids and that’s not a good thing to do as a parent. Sheltering can look a lot of different ways. For Max in the beginning he was trying to deny his disability instead of facing it head on which wasn’t good for his development. With Carmen, all his controlling tactics just made her act out more instead of allowing her to grow up and be the woman she wants to be. It is for those who are willing to do the work; show up to the classes; and being able to push themselves, because nobody is going to do that for you. The only way one can make it through college is prayer(done that and it helped a lot ); perseverance; discipline; relaxing when you need to; making the right friends; and money, because it’s not cheap. Also, consider that you might not find your dream job after college or at least right away. Not to mention those student loans are so much fun to pay off. Smh

He was an ass for how he said it. He should have said, "if you want to go to college you need to be more motivated carmen ill never bring up your past since its the past but colleges won't look kindly on somethings in your past. So you need to up the grades from C's to A's and B's. Start studying and reading more, it will help with your poetry as well to know more words."

And this is the first time Carmen realized her father thought she had no potential. You're right that College is a place of improvement, but it's also a place where you can fall into a deep pit of debt and partying, especially since Carmen has a tendency to lose focus and do stupid things, like get kicked out of two different schools and run away from home for a boy who just wanted to sleep with her. The reason why Carmen is the way she is due to George & Angie's parenting & later on Max's. Yes, they provided their kids with food, water shelter etc, but that doesn't make them make them good parents. I'm reading how George was right, but ironically Carmen made it to college anyway & yes, I know in life they were having their fights, but still. If they were good parents then Carmen wouldn't have been consistently rebellious & Max wouldn't have been drinking later on when he was underage & gotten high. George has an attitude, so of course Carmen was going to have 1 & Angie was privileged, so she got that from her. I'm not defending Carmen, but my point is how did they expect her to act? George was neglectful towards Carmen when she was a kid & he may've been tough on her, but was lenient towards Max & yes, Carmen did worse stuff. However, he was too soft on Max. Angie was the one who was tough on him. She was the one who punished Max after he made his friends think that it was his birthday although it was originally Benny's idea. Angie made Max give all the toys back that was given to him as well as his. When Max pulled a prank on the teacher George gave him a high 5.

And after what happened with Zack, all of it, I wouldn’t put any further money into her education since she got kicked out of the private school that they paid a lot of money for due to what happened at her past school. Don’t get me wrong, you can make some money in poetry, writing but as sad as it is, it’s not a long career like a baseball career is. Jason was getting lined up for baseball, scouts coming to see him, all of it. It is basically set up, he just needs to be ready and focused. Plus going to college for poetry is something she can learn on her own. I do fanfic stories to help practice my writing which will lead to my books I want to publish in the future. Plus I couldn’t afford college. Had to learn on my own. But I have a job that is full time because my writing will not help me pay my bills all the time. Not sure if Carmen would have stick through the years of college with how quickly she changes her mind on things she liked and any new boy that liked her. Horrible to say but it seems to be the truth. Thanks for uploading.

If more parents were like this: kids wouldn't be 40k in debt working at a Call Center...Truth is: going to college doesn't guarantee success. But most successful kids are guaranteed to go to college. You gotta have the drive early on. If you aren't pulling As and Bs in Freshmen History while having no other responsibilities. Good luck even getting a C in Business Calculus 444 while juggling a job and 4 other classes and being away from home...C grade students can still make serious money: Retail Manager, medical assistant, dental assistant, nurse, require Community College only and pull 40k-60k easily and no debt.

@@cocoafemme47 Which is really frustrating. People nowadays think that only financial support is what makes someone a good parent when the parents are legally required to do financially support their kids. As far as Carmen's behavior, it's a major reflection on her parents. If you spend your children's lives being a piece of shit and belittling them to the point to where they start making wreckless decisions because they're so fed up with their parents and/or struggle with low self-esteem, what good are you? No one said raising a child was easy, it's certainly not, but it's still an irreversible responsibility that many parents run away from (running away doesn't necessarily mean not financially supporting your children) when it gets too hard for them. This also holds true for George since Benny was the exact same way towards him and Angie's parents spoiled her.

The reason why George pulled out all the points cause its facts, George wants her daughter to be disciplined but Angie is a bad parent. George wanted to punish Carmen and Angie doesn't the only time I agree with Angie when she puts her in Catholic school, but still she didn't disciplined her more. George did everything for her and even put her in a private school and when every time he wanted Carmen to be disciplined Angie didn't and just let her walk. The thing Angie is the definition of a bad parent, she didn't let her kids work for the stuff (All though Carmen had a job), Angie did so many things behind George's back, and that's why the kids walk over them and expect everything at hand. In the reality Angie isn't a good parent at all, she always wants to be right and be on everybody's good side and that was wrong.

He was being realistic, she made it known in that conversation that she wanted to major in poetry. The probability of you making a career out of that is slim to none. College is an expensive investment. You don't waste money going to college when the probability of you succeeding in life is against your favor in whatever field you are getting into. Carmen obviously lacks motivation while Jason is obviously pushing himself to be a success. Carmen's inability to see this first hand is just another reinforcement in George's mind that Carmen thinks life is a disney fairy tale and success is just going to come to her not matter what she does. Life isn't fair and it isn't a fairy tale. You need to take calculated risks based on probabilities to be successful. The exception to the rule does not make the rule. Feelings can't change Facts, BUT Facts can change Feelings.

George is right though. Studying poetry in College is ridiculous. It won't make her any money, and will just waste their's as they struggle to help her pay for it. She's passionate about it, but even if she does go to college, the more likely scenario would be that Jason would end up supporting her with his far higher paying career, so it's more worthwhile to support his passion.

My dad always told me it's not about what he thinks, it's about what you can prove to yourself. Carmen is no more typical than the average teenager who cares about boys and her hair. But there comes a point in every teenager falls out of it and starts to see where the real priorities need to be. All George has to do is hold onto her through that phase, but this seems like he's given up on her.
