I knew George Lindsey was a comedic actor from his work on The Andy Griffith Show" but was floored when I saw a clip of him doing stand-up comedy. He was hysterical! What a talent!

Good observation. George Lindsey & G. W. Bush seem to share similar looks & mannerisms. They even sound very much alike. I wonder if George Bush can do an imitation of Cary Grant?

I completely agree with you. George Lindsey was indeed a lovely man or, at least, a "lovable" man. I'm very sorry to see him go. I never like his character, Goober, because it was a replacement for Gomer Pyle & nobody could take the place of Gomer. Gomer was a hillbilly with talent, whereas Goober came across as a hick who was (mildly) mentally retarded. His character was certainly strong, but too goofy & comic-strip oriented. I don't think that GL could have been any different. He WAS Goober.

I think he was unsophisticated not retarded. In mechanical things he was very knowledgeable. Remember when he took the car apart and reassembled it in the court house? I wouldn't be able to do that. George Lindsey once said that Goober was unsophisticated, and he said it very funny, but I can't think of the example he used. It had something to do with Goober being impressed at a restaurant about something that wasn't a big deal. Oh, I just remembered. He said that Goober would go into a restaurant and comment, "that was real good salt".

I always preferred Goober to Gomer. What word did you use to refer to his personality in that role?
