George Jones's vocal ability never ceases to amaze me. People don't realize that he achieved that sound ( PERFECTLY in tune) ... LIVE- this was taped LIVE!! Not pre-recorded and then dubbed . All he has on his voice is standard reverb. Ol' George doesn't need any computerized pitch perfection tools, or auto-tune to make him sound good. Jones INVENTED auto-tune with his voice!!! He could hit every key in the vocal spectrum in one breath, and do it all in tune! This is the REAL King George!!

for me this man's voice is one of the top three in the history of the planet. he only opened his mouth halfway to at least TRY to make it fair for the other singers. as a student of vocalists i would really appreciate it if someone who REALLY KNOWS could just remove all of the emotion out of the question and definitively say if he is lip-synching here or not. I have heard the man sing live perfectly (even better than the studio version) many times so it wouldn't take ANYTHING away from his unparalleled brilliance for me to hear that its lip-synched...it is just VERY interesting to me to know the truth. I know people are saying the mic is on a boom above him. and that could be. but even with microphone technology of today, the best mics are placed right in front of the singer's mouth to pick up subtle nuances....but the thing that persuades me most to think its lip-synced is that he is absolutely and provably not strumming the strings of the guitar. just watch it again...never touches the strings once with his strumming hand.
Those eyes have seen a lot of pain. That's why he sings like that. There are a few truly great country and western singers, and I love them all. But George has the most soul.

Those eyes are blind drunk. BLIND drunk. It's UNFATHOMABLE that he's able to do this in the shape he was in. This was recorded LIVE. He was literally superhuman.
In the late 70's my dad was a longhaul, independent, trucker, and met George briefly outside of a small truckstop at Cabazon CA. I was looking for dad, and came out of an exit door, by the cafe, and stumbled into them both. As they shook hands. I was maybe 11 or 12yrs old, and dumb struck! I remember his voice being surprisingly deeper than I imagined.

Yes, George had quite a deep speaking voice, like his lowest notes in this masterpiece. He was the greatest country singer who ever drew breath.
When he sings "three nickels and a dime" in the first chorus, I'm pretty sure I could listen to just that on repeat for an entire year and it would still blow my mind. The phrasing on "dime" is honestly one of the best things I've ever heard.

He wasn't called the Rolls Royce of country music for nothing. Absolutely the greatest. RIP Possum.
Ole possum. Nobody sang so deeply of life’s pain and made it sound so sweet
Positively haunting! George didn't just sing a song, he became the song itself.

Daniel Salazar, the mic was a Uri tube hanging boom mic that could pick up a fart added to a hurricane. I thought I caught a shadow of it once there. Lip sync, not even. Jones didn’t need to lip sync anything. He is not like the sock suckers Trashville is trying to pass off as singers, from rascally flats tires to blowing a fish? WTF kind of crack pipe are they on in those recording exec’s studios these days? GIGO is Trashville studios. Gabage in, garbage out.
He had the most beautiful voice. Really gifted. From reading his autobiography, I'm getting that he knew he'd make money from music, but he didn't really want to be doing it. I think that's why he drank so much..... The amount of travelling he had to do, and the monotony. He came up with fantastic business ideas and seemed to be successful in anything that he chose to pursue. Very interesting character. I wish he'd lived a happier life.

I'm no psychologist but a lot of that deep self-destructive ambivalence goes back to his child hood when his father forced him to sing on the street for money and then stole all the proceeds to finance his own binges. It traumatized him. THANK GOD FOR NANCY, AN ANGEL SENT FROM HEAVEN
The range in his voice was really impossible to duplicate. He could hit a high note then right down to real low one. He was the real deal!! Country music today is just a shell of it's former glory.
Man, george had such a unique voice. The days when being unique in your own way, meant something. Long live true country music.
The man sings as if he's at the brink of crying. You can see the tears brimming in his eyes. a true artistic feat.

Sinatra had an excellent voice, one of the best. What Sinatra didn’t have was the phrasing and enunciation. George could turn words into verbal molasses with his otherworldly phrasing. Listen to how every word that holds the emotional weight of the song is stretched to nearly 5 syllables just to make you feel something. No doubt one of the greatest...perhaps the greatest in Country Music.
Now this is real country music!
I was born in the wrong time period... damn love you George! RIP
I was so fortunate to see George Jones, Conway Twitty and Verne Gosdin in the 4th row of the Chicago Theater before they all passed on. I cried through the entire show. These men were truly the greats of Country music. Country today is so lame I don't listen to it anymore. When I want Country these are the ones I listen to. The Possum, the High Priest, and the Voice! God rest their soul's.
WOW!!! By far the best!!!!!!

I saw him in the 80’s in Vancouver and he absolutely blew my mind. I was not ready for the power in that voice. Best of all time.
george has a voice that no matter how manly you are, can bring tears to your eyes....it jusy really hurts to know ee country
One of George's absolute best songs. I still have the album I bought 45+ years ago with this song on it.
I wonder how many times I've listened to this song. I still have the album that belonged to my Dad. And then he gave it to me. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I'm glad you mentioned the instruments. They are awesome and added so much to the George Jones sound yet I seldom hear anyone even mention how great they are. The steel guitar playing knocks my socks off.
@shannonburns3785

mander1295, the pedal steel was probably Tom Brumley as this was on HeeHaw at the time Tom Terrific was on the show pedalling along. Tom was one of the most under appreciated, yet truely one of the best if not the very best to sit down behind one. Buck Owens said he was the best he ever heard. Brumley’s timing, phrasing, diction, approach and delivery to an instrument he had mastered was second to none.
I love hank and merle and all those great country singers.my opion but I think george was the best country singer of them.his voice well listen to it. I hope I dont offend too many hank fans.
Little Shannon Marie Burns who wrote so many great comments hereon, has left this World to join George at the throne of Jesus Christ. May they both rest in the cradling arms of God. Shannon Burns, June 5, 1976 to August 23, 2019😭
at 1:11 , look how geo sings 'nickel'. THis is song is his lyrical phrasing at its best, classic george jones. His immortal like someone says above - things will ALWAYS go to pieces inevitably for everyone . and george jones knew how to channel this so artfully for all of us. We all get it.
Damn I don't drink but this song makes me want to go get drunk, love George Jones music!

Love this Man for 50 Years
Some people just do not like any kind of Country music. that is their loss but you probably don't like speed metal either. I started out listening to Clssical and Gospel and then heard real country and it never left me and George Jones can not be compared with in my book.I remember Hank Williams and Patsy Cline but when I heard George I got hooked. I also really like Randy Travis. I think we who love country also miss Johnny Cash a lot too. I just can't seem to get into the new country!
I love these songs from early days and George's voice his singing. He always had what it takes to sing magic
That's Sunday mornings after church right there.
George s singing voice I just stop in my tracks and hear him. That lovely voice of his.

George Jones voice the best ever . Love his music . Nice to hear and see him his early days. Good every day
love it love it love it LOVE IT just to see how his mouth makes those words come to life if only there were a video of him doing Beneath Still Waters...

I love you George, and nothing will ever change that !
One of his all-time greatest & one of my all-time favorites!!!
One of his best songs.
Some people need bands, and then there is George Jones! This is George nearly "bandless" ,and I can tell it would be great with he all by himself singing!Singing like no other that is! The greatest! Thanks for putting this up. Is it from Hee Haw '69-'70?
The best voice ever George Jones could sing the words and sing the song his singing came from deep down in him went to our hearts

He can turn a one syllable word into about 5 syllables. Nobody, and I mean nobody can touch Jones. He was a once in a lifetime singer. We will never hear a voice like this again...

Fantastic. George’s voice at its peak. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard anybody say this, but it has always struck me that his singing is very “high lonesome.” You could absolutely imagine that voice working great with Bill Monroe, or The Country Gentlemen.
God Rest Your Soul George,I would Love To Sing W/You In Our Next Lives
I've only listened to this about a thousand times (last week). No wait, last night!
There just no better i sure miss George
From a man's perspective. plus idk where to begin. But George can just strike the truth. Pure Gold.
Amazing - but not suprising. George was at his absolute vocal peak in the late '60s -early '70s, his voice was pure gold in those years. You just stood back and listened as your jaw hit the floor. And somebody should immediately rush a copy of this to Jim Carrey for further inspection (by the way - where WAS George in say, 1961, 1962? Hmmm...).
We just lost one of the greatest ever. We have Willie & Merle left and when they're gone, so is country music. The shit that is gushing out of Nashville doesn't deserve to be called Country Music. That crap is no better than the shit Justin Bieber & Katie Perry produce. George is up there singing with Jimmy Rogers, Hank, Lefty, Johnny, & Waylon. We'll get to listen to their music again one day.
Love George s voice in this song. The way he sings each word. He sings so naturally he just sing best none better then George s voice singing each word
Thank You George for this song! It is my favorite. I will miss you so. I like Hank Williams senior but he never moved me like you and Randy Travis do!
