George Hearn Performs "I Am What I Am" From LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

Ойын-сауық

This is (to me), the only known pro video of Hearn in costume performing one of Jerry Herman's greatest songs, "I Am What I Am".

I’m so glad a pro shot of this performance was created! There is no existing footage that’s actually clear, of George Hearn in costume singing this song! I’m so grateful we are able to preserve this masterpiece and I hope this song remains a universal anthem of acceptance!

The last of the real Broadway baritones. And how daring of him to open the last F. Had he correctly covered it, the orchestra would have overshadowed him. I saw two of his final performances of La Cage. Even when in Sweeney Todd, he was careful not to over cover the F#s. Best all around Broadway performer I ever saw.

He and John Cullum were the greatest for me. Two of the most intelligent singers I've heard on Broadway.

I was lucky enough to see the original production of LaCage as well. It was marvelous and both Hearn and Barry were fantastic.

What does cover mean in singing?

I'm surprised the original run was not professional recorded in full and released on video cassette and, eventually, on DVD. Or that they didn't do a full motion picture feature of the musical.

It's my understanding that a film version was in the planning stages. I had gone to see the show a second time in '87 and spoke with one of Mr. Hearn's replacements (Keene Curtis). He indicated that the film had been indefinitely postponed due to the AIDS crisis.

Love this but could do without Barbawa Wawa's voice at the beginning.

It does serve as a reminder of how long and yet not so long ago this was. Like a person holding a copy of a day’s newspaper in a photo.
