    My sweet George. Gone too soon. Missed always. George was not afraid when he died; he was a Krishna Buddhist. He believed he was going somewhere better. His last words were "love one another".

    He had a meditation symbol and a Cross on the cover of his last album "Brainwashed". Bob Spitz, who wrote "The Beatles: The Biography", the product of almost a decade of research, stated: “Later in life he [Harrison] would become a vegetarian, consult an astrologer, and devote himself to Transcendental Meditation before embracing traditional Christianity.” When asked for the source of his statement, Spitz stated “As for the source of George’s return to traditional Christianity, the source was the man himself, conveyed to me some months before he died.”

    @@DawnSuttonfabfour "Hare Krishna" means "everything that exists". "Krishna" is another name for God, so he did "call on God". "Hare" is a way of addressing God's energy. The Hare Krishna mantra is a sacred Sanskrit verse recited as a way to cultivate awareness of God and achieve God realization. I guess he had a meditation symbol beside a Cross on his last album "Brainwashed" just for the hell of it? Sorry you haven't done your research.

    I love George Harrison, especially his song "Give Me Love". Fun fact. If you sang along to the Hari Krishna chant, you're guaranteed a place in Krishna Heaven according to some Krishnas I hung out with in Oregon in 1981. They said they loved George Harrison for saving so many souls. It was an interesting time.

    You may know by now, Biz, that George Harrison's version of this classic is the original. George was by far the most spiritual of the Beatles. The friendship of Harrison and Preston went back to 1962 when Billy played keyboards for Little Richard's band. Richard and The Beatles shared a concert bill in Liverpool that year in a show presented by Beatle manager Brian Epstein. There are no solo songs by George Harrison that I would discourage playing, but I am partial to a beautiful song called "Beautiful Girl", off his Thirty Three & 1/3 album from 1976.

    George Harrison was very spiritual and studied eastern traditions. In this song they chant what is called the "Guru Mantra" ... Guru Bramha, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo, etc. This mantra is sung to honor the lineage of spiritual masters that came before us. In another version of this song, George mentions Jesus. There are temples in India honoring Jesus and the time he spent there. Love this song!! Great reaction to this song!!!

    Hey @bizmatic, you're right - the original by George Harrison is the original. Billy Preston was there when the song was written - he was a part of it and that's exactly why he deserves to sing and perform this song. George must have wanted him to perform like that - I think George is fine with that and no one would make it better than Billy Preston. George was HORRIFICALLY underappreciated in the Beatles. He was a musical genius. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "Beware of Darkness" "Isn't it a Pity", "Let it Down" and there are tons more! He wanted to escape the Beatles because he had a massive stockpile of incredible music and got tired of fighting to get a song or two on an album! He went on to handpick friends to become the Traveling Wilburys. He was MUCH happier!!

    Becoming a Hindu after the Beatles' visit to India, George became very religious. He worshiped the god Hare Krishna. This song is dedicated to his lord, with the Hare Krishna mantra, hallelujah, and Vedic prayers at the end. He once said it was a song for all religions.

  • @mikecaetano
    @mikecaetano Жыл бұрын

    I remember hearing this playing on the radio at the Dairy Queen my parents took us to once after church when I was three or four. All those "Hallelujahs" fit right in with the music from church, the "Hare Krishnas" not so much. That slide guitar really stood out too. Did you notice how long it took before the drums kicked in? I played guitar in the church youth choir when I was in high school and my buddy and I tried to slip this song into the program once, until the director told us no. The hare-krishna bits were a step too far I suppose. We played an instrumental bit from Pink Floyd instead without telling him and he never knew the difference. Harrison was taken to court over "My Sweet Lord" on the accusation that he plagiarized "He's So Fine" by the Chiffons for this song. He lost the case because the similarities between the songs are clear, but the ruling was that the plagiarism was subconscious so he retained his reputation, thankfully. I blame that whole mess on Phil Spector. Check out The Chiffons "He's So Fine" for comparison. Also check out some of the songs George Harrison wrote for The Beatles -- "Long Long Long", "Savoy Truffle", and "I Me Mine" among them.

    I agree with everything you say, man. Jesus subverted the strict religious authority of the day, saying to love each other, love something higher than yourself (God), and take special care of those who are struggling. This song is so spiritual though. The repetition hits well, but only when you're there in the zone. Too bad about the Billy Preston version being taken down. George wrote the song when he was still in The Beatles and gave it to Billy, who recorded it first. I love Billy's version. It's way different. It feels a lot more gospel and has such a great groove.
