Could you slow this down by 10 percent please? This piece sounds better when it's relaxed.

There is also a recording of Fred and Adele Astaire singing along with Gershnwin playing: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aHaIr5JwcpO7Zpc.html Of course the playing is not so fancy and I always wonder to what extent these rolls were edited and perfected after.... My brother played stride and always thought some of the trills were impossible..

A lot of the old piano rolls were for 4 hands and some of them were performed by people but a lot were mechanically arranged. Some were of course, as you suggest, doctored after the parts had been originally "recorded"

It is believed that nearly all Confrey rolls, except for a handful, were made from sheet music arrangements for 4 hands that he wrote out, and which were actually arranged and punched by chief editors at the roll companies (probably Max Kortlander or Victor Arden at QRS, and probably J Milton Delcamp at Ampico, as here). It was still Confrey’s arrangement and ideas, but the realization of the touch/swing and any dynamics, was up to the roll arranger .

A handful of Confrey’s rolls sound exactly like the way he played on his audio recordings, and are likely the closest thing we have on rolls to the “real” solo Confrey. These include “My Pet” and “Johnny’s in Town”.

@@KawhackitaRag Thank you. I know of TWO people who couldn't play at all, but bought players just so they could listen to rolls. That's dedication. I wish I had room for one. My brother had two.

Unless the pianist has abnormally large hands (Rachmaninoff-size), this piece is indeed unplayable.
