I used to get a monthly football magazine called northern football. It had a big article on George best saying he was every managers dream footballer he didn't drink or smoke and just hung around the Stretford bowling alley. That was in the days when he just was getting noticed at old Trafford .I used to go to the youth cup games and I remember the first time I saw him play .I knew then that he was very special. I followed United all over in them days .I remember going to spurs for one game and the game was ONE of the rare quite games between them two .nothing much had happened then best went on a run and my day was complete he only hit the crossbar ,but that few seconds with him running at the spurs defence with the ball at his feet was magical and worth every penny of the cost that day A wonderful footballer in a wonderful era of football

Tavy@ i have noticed how shy best was. But he was the greatest player in the world between 1966 to 1972. He was untouchable then. But i have seen alot of georges games pre 1966 and was shocked to see how average he really was. A didnt expect that becouse he always said he was born with a gift?. Between 1963 to mid 1966 i saw him in at least 50 games and he was poor. His passing was bad and the defenders took the ball of him 80% of the time! R.i.p george

If Best was as poor as you claim it is highly unlikely Busby would have persisted with him. His performances in the 1964/65/66/67 seasons, such as in games against Benfica at its Lisbon stadium, or at Chelsea in 1964 at Stamford Bridge, etc, were exceptional. He had a dip briefly in 66 when his off-field excesses were affecting him, I recall from a biography, but overall his class remained until the early 70s when things went wrong. His finest seasons were 67-68 and 69. It is a shame United didn't rebuild more after winning the European Cup because he increasingly had to keep the side going, and frustrations got to him. But it is what it is. I met him a couple of times. He struck me as rather shy, and super-sharp intelligent. Such a shame he could not fight his demons. As long as football is played, he will be remembered.

I never saw him play. Pele saying he was the best footballer made me look at his games and his life. George Best gave us a vision of what the game could be. He didn't ask for our help or sympathy. Alcoholism is a disease, not a choice. He was open and honest about his life. He was a great player, the best. He gave us the game, especially in America. I can never be critical of the man who blew the doors off of soccer and brought us true football magic.

I met George when I was 10 or 11 when my Dad Taffy refereed his game with Aztecs. For the times when he had his miss's babysit me to when he brought me a cheeseburger with no cheese, I love him and Besty will always be my idol. My Dad loved him as well. I got a photo on my website www.greenwoodsoccer.net

The greatest of them all, what a talent, and so handsome, yet the pull of alcohol destroyed him, very sad, he packed in Utd when he was 27, instead of approaching his prime he was even then totally hooked on booze and self destruction, it must be an illness, i feel cheated by George and his addiction.
