This is literally the worst introduction to Hegel I've ever come across. Not only is Paul Strathern obviously biased against Hegel, but he also doesn't understand him. Don't waste ninety minutes of your day on this

Devin Nolan dont waste 9 seconds on German Idealism. It is a blatant attack on Reason.

The "philosophy in 90 min" books are snarky bios rather than cliff notes.

There's a certain method of argumentation known as an 'ad hominem attack'. It's where someone attacks another not for his beliefs, but for supposed personal characteristics. It's almost universally viewed with contempt. Mr. Strathern makes God knows how many such attacks on Hegel even before he mentions H's 'Phenomenology of Spirit'. There's another principle of argumentation known as 'interpretative charity'. This means that, when you are paraphrasing an authour with whom you disagree, you endeavour to both understand his argument, and re-present it in the strongest way possible. Those who chose not to do so are almost universally viewed as intellectual charlatans. Mr. Strathern presents random phrases of Hegel -- without context or definition of terms -- as incomprehensible jumbles of words. Hegel's thought is difficult and requires no small effort to comprehend; divergent readings are common. There are a number of good videos on Hegel's thought on KZread. This is not one of them. A short, comprehensible intro to his thought -- published in the late 19th Century as an 'Everyman Edition' (if memory serves) -- is E.H. Caird's 'Hegel', which is available online as a pdf. (There are other, more modern intros, but I've always been a fan of Caird.) Have fun with Hegel, rather than watching this burlesque of a video.

Just read all the whingeing comments below. This in my opinion is a wonderful introduction to Hegel and I think there is a great balance between theory and biography.

Inaccurate and sarcastic. Read just a few original sources to see where Hegel's contemporaries refute and disprove most of what this childish writer is saying especially the nonsense about supporting the aristocracy.

Paul Strathern clearly had no interest in giving listeners anything more than a performance of snarky Besserwissen and doleful puns. This is a terrible 'talk' on Hegel's philosophy although we do hear Paul wink about the cleaning lady several times.

This book kinda sucks. There's really nothing about Hegel's ideas, just a brief biography. Also, it seems like the author hates Hegels and treats him like a clown.
