I'm not Sri Lankan. I''m Greek but I have to point out that there was no mentioning of Asia's 1st woman head of state who was Sri Lankan!!! I'm refering to Queen Anula who reigned Sri Lanka from 47 BC until 42 BC. She is also called "The black widow" of all times because during her 5 years on the throne she got married to 5 different men and she killed them all by using poison, just because she was also a notorious nymphomaniac that she was always targeting to the next hottest man available around her after getting bored with the man she already was with!!! That's a hell of a story that shouldn't be avoided to my opinion 😉👍

Also interestingly, during Ashoka and Indo-greek rule, there were ancient greek converts to Buddhism who travelled to Sri Lanka and paid homage and support to a stupa (a form of buddhist monument/edifice) created in the nation. Interesting link between Ancient SL and Greece. Ancient greeks called Sri Lanka Taprobane so they did know of its mysterious existence

🇱🇰 I have my profile picture background of Sigiriya Rock for 7yrs now. While looking for a room to stay (peak season and hotels are fully booked) a family offered their son's room for small fee. With free coconut and rock apple(?). In return I ate in their small canteen for dinner, bf and lunch. I give them a big tip which they are trying to give it back to me running in the street while on my way to taxi station. Very accommodating and hospitable people. ❤️❤️❤️ 🇵🇭

ALL THE BEST TO YOU, I have a sense of connection to your homeland in East India (Bihar and Odisha). It is where the ancestors of the Sinhalese people originate from during 6th century Kalinga period 😎 Bihar was home to one of the first Indian empire Magadha, Vajj was the first known republic in India (present day Bihar), Mauryan empire and Gupta empire had major ties to the region because of Pataliputra one of the best ancient cities of India, Buddha got enlightened in Bihar (Bodh Gaya) and hence is the holiest site of Buddhism. Nalanda university, one of India's greatest ancient institutions was in Bihar. Bihar is one of richest places of India and is underappreciated. More interesting than Delhi, Punjab and other Northern Indian regions in my opinion. All the best to Bihar and its people

I have a friend who thought that Sri Lanka (where I was born in) was a state of India in the ocean and when he realised that he was wrong; he tried so hard to prove me wrong.

22:44 small mistake here. The 1996 world cup win wasn't the only one but rather the first one Sri Lanka won. Sri lanka has won a world cup in another format of the game called T20 which is the shortest international format. the 1996 world cup was a one day international which is the second shortest international format of the game.
In Australia, we have a big Sri Lankan community that have been here for many years. Awesome community that have integrated into our culture magnificently. Beautiful people that have added big value to Australia.

Good to know though they probably moved at different times. The Sri Lankan Burghers who moved en masse in the 1960s & 70s would have easily integrated into Australian society while the boat Tamil refugees would have found integration much harder.

4:21 ok to give him credit, 'dagoba' is technically, sort of correct. Bodhiya is the bo tree around which many temples have shrines with statues of Lord Buddha. Usually we also have the dagaba (stupa... dhathu+garbhaya = dagaba, which we usually pronounce as dah-gabber) next to it.

The Tamils were brought over for cheap plantation labour they didn’t inhabit the island prior to colonialism in large numbers

@@peepeetrain8755 RUBBISH! You won't lose your natural way of pronouncing in your mother tongue just because you start speaking other language on a day to day basis. I've lived in another place where they don't speak my mother tongue for 6 years, yet I did not develop any accent. Neither did any of the people I know have.
I always come back to Geography now and watch the video of any country I'm about to visit just to get a quick refresher. Visiting Sri Lanka in a few weeks and I'm very excited!

@@thotsapornpornchaijaroonsa7508 the fact Buddhism comes from India means it can only be a religion of India and not Lanka where Hinduism is already the native religion. What is written does not apply to Lanka as it declared independence in 1976. So Lanka which is a Tamil name can thus not be Buddhist as not a single Lankan person is Buddhist.

I'm a Catholic who lives in a small town in Oregon, and our priest is Sri Lankan. He was ordained over there but sent here since our diocese didn't have enough priests. I believe he's supposed to go back home in about 5 years, but we will definitely miss him when he leaves, we like him a lot!

Couldn't resist but to appreciate the efforts of the presenter Barbs for his pronunciation of Sri Lankan names and places. Sad to say some Sri Lankans nowadays don't do that.
